oh, let's all quit being coy, most of us will own this for one reason or another within the next two years

we can still point fingers and laugh, though

One of the awesome things about having kids is blaming foolhardy purchases on them.  There will be a WiiU in my household Xmas morning, and it will in no way be my fault!

*gasp*

thanks, i have my excuse!

I'd be a heavy iOS gamer if there was a controller released for it.  I can't stand touchscreen gaming, which to me is much worse than waggling.

i don't mind it all for right stick camera control, but lifting your finger up to hit an onscreen fire or action button is the pits

Touchscreen gaming is great for specific things- turn based strategy/rpgs, card/board game adaptations, etc.  If you like those type of games (I really do) then iOS gaming is pretty boss.  ymmv, obviously.

touch screen only is fine for all sorts of game types.  problem is the game makers resort to touch screen buttons and shit that don't work.  for rpgs and stat-y and strategy games you don't need buttons.

Nintendo will kill it as usual while 3rd parties continue to piss and moan about everything.  There is no reason to "help out"3rd parties. If they want to pass up another opportunity for the second generation in a row, their loss.
I think when just about every western third party wants no part of Nintendo the problem there isnt likely to be said third parties.

remember the uproar of interest in Wii prior to release? All the hype?

compare WiiU to Wii.

How does a controller work on a tablet? Do you prop the screen up on your boner?

Jimmy had no idea what to even say about it to make it sound interesting.  With the wii all you had to say was "move the controller like a golf putter and it moves that way on the screen" and you intuitively know what the product is about and how it applies to games.  Nintendo hasn't found a concise statement that justifies the Wii U in the same way.  What does "flicking from one screen to another screen" have to do with video games? How does that help with immersion?  If you need a whole paragraph to justify why your controller gimmick is worthwhile then you're either selling to a niche market or you have a pretty serious branding issue.  Mainstream media isn't going to go out of its way to justify the console to its listeners.

Yeah, seems like a name change might be an idea. The "Ultra 64" name was changed fairly close to the US launch IIRC, anyone know how close to launch it was? I've seen pics of Ultra 64 branded merch they put out pre-launch...

It's kind of funny that this doesn't happen with Playstation, but I think it's because there, with the customers, the "Playstation" name trumps Sony's, so it's the default brand name, whereas with Nintendo, their name will always trump the name of the console, so any attempt to extend the console's name out to a wider brand is bound to cause confusion.

That's why I said they ought to just drop all pretense and call it The Nintendo™  It's what parents and grandparents are gonna call it when they ask the Wal-Mart dude, anyway.

"Y'all got that Nintendo?"

And it's not like they don't have the hubris for it. They're already making an entire game built around and named after their game company.

Sony names stuff 2 and 3, not U, and they don't release 15 gadgets and hardware refreshes per cycle.

Yeah, a simple wii 2 would fix the confusion.  If enough reporting makes this mistake they would be incredibly stubborn to stick to the U branding which really doesn't make sense at all, unless pronoun wordplay becomes some kind of lexicon fad.

I don't think this is gonna bomb.  Its a mistake to gamble on something as relatively insular as Nintendoland compared to Wii Sports, but the NSMB franchise is freaking huge.  More disconcerting is that companies lamenting how they can't consider a AAA game a success unless it hits x million units sold are probably gonna pass over a comparable spec'd system compared to their 360 wares, which indications right now are that 360 code is easy to adjust to the platform.  It speaks to an incredible lack of faith that they wont even take what should be a modest investment to dev for the system during thiss pre-durango ecosystem.

I understand why Nintendo doesn't want to moneyhat, but they need to lube this machination at least preliminarily if they want to gain momentum.  If the 3ds eshop is any indication, smaller devs are gonna just be as apathetic as the WiiU shop.

Miss creative names like Genesis, Saturn, or Dreamcast, or hell, the original Playstation.

This system feels nothing like the original Wii. Why keep the Wii brand? I know they want to localize their wii audience gained from that tenure to the wiiu, but they are doing such an awful job of showing that this is a brand spankin' new product, it would seem smart to distance themselves from the wii name in general to show that it truly is a new fuckin thing.

Really?  Why would you risk it by basically introducing what looks like an unproven product into the marketplace whereas you can go with a brand that has sold 80ish million consoles and several mega blockbusters that rivaled the kings of this generation like Call of Duty?  The system will host new iterations of NSMB and Wiifit and use all the same accessories/controllers associated with the older system.  It makes perfect sense to continue the label and further strengthen it.  I havent seen much evidence they have a solid plan to strengthen it, but I don't think Wii is as bankrupt in social awareness as the internet would have you believe.  Just Dance was like freaking huge, mang.

85% of the pensioners who bought the Wii are long since dead - they WILL be selling to a completely new market. OR... a zombie army of pensioners.

Give Nintendo their due as well - they went without the Gameboy name when they punted on the DS. I think as Oscar put it - it's more likely that Nintendo is a stronger brand than any of the names they attack. Wii U is confusion waiting to happen. And as mentioned - if Iwata thinks people aren't going to be able to tell the difference between Wii U and PS4/X720 then are people going to be able to tell the difference between Wii and Wii U? Every time you see a game coming up with Mii's all over it the lesser informed elements of the fanbase is going to struggle to notice what is actually different and may well start thinking that the Wii U -is- just an expensive add on.

This is like the only active Nintendo thread here, and I'm afraid I'd get banned on GAF for posting this but I don't like how Nintendo's advertising shit to me in Swapnote. I get messages from Reggie, some random Japanese dude, that annoying guy from E3, and some chiptune band all hawking their wares at me with audio and ugly Miis.

I have a Wii with NSMB, SMG, and SMG2.  In my opinion, these are the only three Wii games worth owning.

But not enough to actually buy a Wii.

They should just call it the Super Wii. Wii was a back to the roots thing to the point where the wiimote held sideways basically was an NES controller, why not go whole hog with the retroage?

That's because the Vita is a new version of a console no one wanted.

Also Super Wii would raise too many questions...

"Super Wii? What's so super about it"
"Well it plays 12 month old games in 720p"
"That's not very super"

Gundam 0079 is one of my few Wii imports (along with Tatsunoko vs Capcom, Disaster.  actually that might be it).  It's pretty good, like Side Story on the dreamcast with worse graphics.  I should see if it runs on dolphin one of these days.

It can't be brought up enough that the WiiU totally fails the hype test set by the Wii in terms of casuals. The Wii controller was quite innovative and interesting, and it's hard to deny the appeal of stuff like WiiSports or WiiPlay for casuals. I can't see WiiU replicating the interest and hype the Wii received in mainstream outlets, from Oprah to news reports.

To make matters worse, Nintendo doesn't have a game to show off the controller's general appeal. Nintendo Land looks like a complete joke, and the name alone is a turn off
