No soap/no shampoo - a three month challenge
« on: June 17, 2012, 10:41:51 PM »
I am on week one: showering with no soap at all except for my butt crack and no shampoo/conditioner. I still use deodorant.

So far, results are awesome. I'm not smelling any BO at all and in fact, I'm noticing it's taking me LONGER to stink even after a long sweaty walk. Makes no sense but it's awesome.

Since I naturally oily skin because I'm a DARKIE this will be interesting, but I'm seeing good results so far. If I like what happens past month three, I may stick with this.

I tried this before to bad results.

I have very thin hair so not shampooing it daily resulted in the hair sticking out all over and not being able to comb it into place.  I think having healthy, shiny hair only works if it is thick.  If it is thin (thin, not thinning), then you're SOL.

My dreams of looking like this handsome motherfucker have been dashed  :'(

This is probably my future  :(

I never use soap, ever.  I am not smelly or unclean.  I have come to the conclusion that people who think it's necessary are delusional.  I use shampoo every day though.

I don't see how not using shampoo = not gross
not using soap = gross

The two principles are similar.

Not washing your hair sounds gross- how do you avoid breaking out? How do you avoid SMELL of HAIR OILZ. I had a western civ prof explain how the french got away without bathing because eventually you get enough grime where your develop this sorta shell of grime that is kind of neutral in the smell department- still gross

Who said you don't wash your hair? You wash your with straight water instead of shampoo.

Also, who said anything about not bathing?

You do realize that most hair stylists say you should probably cut down on shampoo. Using shampoo daily damages hair, and it's not really necessary.

I'd like to know what series of events led to this stupid idea. smh himu

About a year ago, I heard about no shampoo method. I tried it for awhile. I was curious because my hair was thinning. Now my hair is much thicker. I use shampoo, but only sparingly. I used it for the first time in about 3 months last week.

From there, I heard about no soap and figured why not, I'll try it.

It takes about a week for the body to stop producing extra oil and then it normalizes. For hair, sometimes two weeks.

Under my dermatologist's orders.  Has worked out great and I never looked back.  When I was 11 or so I had a dermatitis on my face.  He recommended that I just rinse my face vs. washing it to see if it worked.  The dermatitis went away and I never broke out.

Ive been doing this for a few months now.  I only use soap for hand washing and deodorant and uh .... toothpaste?.  I'm not gonna say the results are amazing but you do realise just how unnecessary most personal hygiene products are compared to hot water and a rough sponge.  Skin's a little better.  That rough stuff underneath my arm isn't as bad as it was before.  Basically, washing hair is simply a matter of using a brush/comb while rinsing the hair out under hot water.

edit: Hey MAF, you do realise we evolved from animals that probably had natural processes to maintain healthy looking skin without the need to invent chemicals, right?

I haven't used shampoo in over three years, but I do have to use soap if I put any sort of product in it.  I'm not sure there's any way of getting around it.

I'm not in a position to get away with the no-soap adjustment period, and I like the smell of my body wash.

In my case the adjustment period didnt involve smelling bad or whatever.  If you exfoliate your skin thoroughly with hot water you always wash the stink off, trust me.  If anything I'm more mindful of my cleaning now then when I used soap.  The adjustment period is feeling super oily all the time.  Its that sticky feel on your skin and that globby hair feeling and just general scumminess for the first two weeks.  But it sorts itself out in the end.

edit: I'm forgetting to mention that this works best if you don't eat copious amounts of shit.  Diet also plays a major factor in skin/hair quality and how you smell.

Not necessarily, Positive. If you're oily like me, your body is probably making excess oil in response to the soap. If you quit the soap, maybe your oil levels will go back to normal. May not be entirely true, but that's the general idea.

True but you should probably use a mild shampoo instead of no shampoo.  It's hard to get rid of oil without soap.  Greasy hair or skin is pretty disgusting in the summer.

If my hair is short enough I can do no shampoo for a few days. But then my scalp becomes greasy and it's just as disgusting.

This reminds me of all the sweaty foreigners I encountered in Asia-land who stopped using deodorant because they "were eating just like the locals," and that somehow changed their physiology.

They claimed that they didn't perspire/smell/whatever anymore.

They were wrong.

I tried the no shampoo thing once, and after four days I couldn't handle it anymore. Felt like I was Lou Dunbar and could pull all kinds of useful shit out of it.

They claimed that they didn't perspire/smell/whatever anymore.

They were wrong.

That much is true.  The people who try these experiments/lifestyles almost always claim they don't smell when they're not the judge of it.  It's possible not to smell, sure.  But sometimes the person is just saturated in their own rank.

I tried the no shampoo thing a while back.  Did seem to help but those first few days I didn't want to touch my hair or rest my head on anything.

I'm pretty good at noticing my own BO, I'm real sensitive to it. That's not to say I don't eventually stink like usual by the end of the day. But after a shower? I certainly don't have BO because I wash that all off.

Your point is that is that if you don't use soap, you'll have BO! When in reality, soap smell wears off - real quick, real fast. Most of the smell you put on occurs after a shower: deodorant, cologne. Your claim is that you know people who claim they didn't smell after using deodorant? Of course they're full of shit. Deodorant masks musk. But soap? You think people will smell because they aren't using soap in the shower? On what basis? How? How is there a difference between using hot water and a washcloth/sponge and a washcloth/sponge with soap? If you're scrubbing, and using water, you're still getting dirt and excess off of your body.

So your point about people smelling is a total random one and irrelevant one, especially when someone who is not using soap DOES use deodorant.
