i;ve been using the microsoft natural elite keyboard for a year or so now and i love the design. probably my favorite keyboard design i've ever used.

i would like to try out a mechanical keyboard but it would have to be the same design as that keyboard.

I have a das silent (brown) at home.  Really like it.

I want to get a coolermaster quickfire mini keyboard (small, no number pad, detachable usb cable) for other purposes but it seems like nowhere sells the brown version.  I've tried different key types, except red, and browns are my favorite.

mechanicalkeyboards.com sells the whole line, and the guy who runs it (shaker) is a nice dude.

the quickfire rapid is a good board. the ODM is the same as for filco (and actually das as well), but slightly spec'd down in mostly intangible ways (basically, it's an epsilon less rigid than filco boards, and the factory it comes out of may be different).

if you're interested in light linear switches, the red rapid has a cool red anodized switch-plate.

the only problem with the coolermaster is all the damned logos anywhere, but that's cool. there are tons of replacement keysets you can buy that don't have stupid fonts and logos everywhere. some people have also either painted or vinyl wrapped the case to get rid of the logos on it and bling it up a bit more.

see geekhack.org for more infozzz

yeah, the logos and stuff tend to be gaudy on these gamer products.  But I like the idea of a detachable cable, which I don't think the Filco has.

the brown tactile bump is really really mild. blues have more tactility, clears the most. one of the more desired switches is a clear stem for high tactility but a brown spring for lower force; this is often referred to as "ergo-clears"

we recently bought out cherry's supply of clears on geekhack. in about 2-4 weeks, there will be a lot of clear switches in our classifieds section. in fact, i'm sending out a hundred to a dude with a phantom kit he bought off me.

vintage clears are also still readily available on ebay if you know what donor boards to look for.

Hey, I was actually thinking about buying a mechanical keyboard in the near future (a Das silent with Cherry MX brown switches). How mild exactly is the click on the brown switches? I want something nice and clicky but at the same time I don't want something so loud that it's going to annoy anyone within my vicinity. If anyone's got any thoughts on this model or suggestions for a better model I'd love to hear them.

it's pretty mild. those with heavy/strong hands (eg, do you play guitar?) will barely feel the tactile bump at all. clears are bit better in this regard, but there's something about an audible click + bump that makes blues/buckling springs/alps switches significantly more tactile than browns.

i would start with browns unless you know you're a very hard/strong/poundy typer. if you are, i'd consider pcb mounted blues. the KBT/vortex pure, race, and poker all fit into this category, but are mini-layouts. many classic cherry boards are also pcb mounted. another option is cherry clears (you can get new keycools from china or used leopolds) or topre 55gs.

the Brown is plenty clicky - you can hear it from several rooms away. I find the Blues to be too loud and I don't really like the 1-2 double resistance feel - the browns a are a bit smoother. I did a TON of research and even checked out some Blues before deciding Brown was for me. you can check out some YouTube videos of different mechanical keyboards (seriously) to get an idea of the noise level.

Brown is louder if you're used to normal keyboards.  I came from louder Logitech keyboard, not even a scissor or island style, and the das quiet is a very noticeable sound difference but oh so much better to type/game on.

I think some places can ship you a bag of switches to get a feel for each.  That's a bit excessive to me.  More recently I've seen Microcenter stores have mechanical keyboards out to demo.

yes, i forgot to mention that you can "modify" cherry stems very slightly by putting shock absorbing rubber around the keystem to dampen the sound of bottoming the switch out. wasdkeyboards is the most reliable seller of these, and offers a number of different options that give you clear tradeoffs between feel and sound.

also, topre. i know everyone balks at the price, but these are the smoothest feeling keyboards that you'll ever feel, and are naturally pretty quiet as well. in addition, they offer a "silenced" switch which includes a dampener that makes them even quieter, while still retaining a very smooth tactile feel.

I am rocking a Filco Majestouch-2 Ninja Cherry MX Brown Semi-otaku front face.

I can only type one handed when i use it because my other hand is in my pants looking for something to tug.

good god - why wipe your arse with toilet paper when you can use silk?

To add - i have NO IDEA why people ignore quality mechanical keyboards.

Too many dickslurps banging on about thier $5000 multi core crossfired GPU water cooled set up whilst they rock a $2 USB keyboard and a shite $3 mouse.

Been mentioned before but this is YOUR PC ffs. A machine you will likely spend 3-4 years using - don't you want each keystroke to feel like stroking loliclitty? shouldn't each mouse swipe feel like the caress of a fine eskimo womans toppage?

ffs gentlemen - get your smoking jackets on and indulge yourselves. Ffs - cut back on water cooling and buy an input device worthy of Caesar himself. you screaming great cockmunches.

old apple keyboards used alps switches (and sometimes alps clones). edgar matias of matias tactile pro fame is carrying on the apple mechanical tradition:

http://matias.ca/tactilepro/

in fact, he has a new very cool product coming out soon: quiet alps switches based on an older orange simplified alps design that i'm not very familiar with. if you loved your old AEK, AEKII, or M0116, matias is the company to watch, and the tactile pros are the keyboards to heavily consider.
