RIP Simpsons Hit and Run. Down goes radical

And they had to spend their last days working on those shitty prototype games. How many potentially good devs will Activision shutter this gen.

I'm surprised they even completed Prototype 2. Apparently 75% of the staff was laid off.

Prototype was awesome. Dummo about 2.

Didn't like either. Didn't help that I thought the stories and characters were douches and dumb faux wannabe edgy

Ultimate Destruction was good. Scarface isn't a bad game for what it is.

They also had a couple of games cancelled which along with Prototype sealed their fate. Wish they had been able to make new games in either the hulk or simpsons franchise.

Radical making hit and run is really surprising news to me.  It's a solid GTA and platformer game with really incredible fan service.  Been a longtime since I played but I remember driving the Homer car and the gold rocket car (from the original Itchy and Scratchy creator episode).  You could also cheat past most missions by getting out of the car and running to the goal.

I liked Ultimate Destruction too.  But 80% of Prototype is bad; escalation in that game is fucked.  It takes some time to finally get powerful and have fun, and it is fun for a short while.  But then the game introduces stronger, cheaper, stupid enemies and it's not fun anymore.

wait, they made Scarface? just yesterday I was talking with someone about how bizarre the concept of that game is.  I hope youtube has the cutscene I want.

Well I can't find it now but the entire concept is, "yo, what if Tony did turn around in the final scene?" and then they just extrapolate what would happen if Tony survives.  and there's a cojones meter for killing people, and when it's high enough you go into a first person.  It came out around the same time as the Godfather game, which attempted to respect the original story and interweave a new thread with the player character.  Scarface didn't bother with any of that shit.

Prototype was flawed, but mostly fun. I was pretty tired of it by the time I put it aside.

I've always wanted a copy of Hulk: Ultimate Destruction, and Hit-and-Run was great.

Too bad about Radical, but after Prototype 2 falling on its face, and with (apparently) only one game going in that studio, it's not shocking. It is a little surprising that Activision didn't have the OWG structure and skills of Radical instead turned toward some other license that Activision holds. It's a waste, and sadly unsurprising that ACTI can't see past the current quarter.

Well, Radical used to be able to do multiple games at once, until Activison fired the entire Crash Bandicoot team.

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-06-29/vivendi-said-to-plan-sale-of-stake-in-activision-blizzard.html

Quote
Vivendi SA (VIV), the media and telecommunications company that ousted its chief executive this week, has decided to seek a buyer for its $8.1 billion stake in Activision Blizzard Inc. (ATVI), a person with knowledge of the situation said.

Should no buyer emerge for the 61 percent holding in the Santa Monica, California-based video-game publisher, Paris-based Vivendi plans to sell a partial holding on the open market, said the person, who declined to be named because the plans are private.

Borys would probably kill himself if MS bought them, good thing that MS is not much interested in gaming, they have the money though, sometimes they spend it(they bought Skype for $8.5 billion last year).

Buyer would get(gaf, probably not totally accurate),

Quote
Bond license (maybe)
Spyro
Crash
Warcraft
Starcraft
Diablo
Skylanders
Guitar hero
Tony hawk
Geometry wars (I think)
Blur
Call of duty
Spider-Man license
X-Men license
Transformers license
NASCAR license (they've published the last 3 games in the series)
Bungie project

Maybe some Asian company comes with a bag of cash.

You do realize that video game companies were going out of business BEFORE this generation, right?

The last one sold about as well as Yakuza 1 in NA.

I'm guessing that's not a compliment towards how well Yakuza sold.

What's happening is the same process that's been accelerating in the last few years. The gutting of the middle class and b tier developers and games. And if ever there was a b class franchise its prototype.

I don't agree.  If all of those developers put their games on the Wii instead, they'd be booking record profits instead of closing up shop.

You're not suggesting this generation has been normal in terms of developer closures, are you?  Not only has there been considerably more developer closures than in previous generations, a lot of these closing developers are *ollllllllld* devs with pretty safe business models.  The "meat and potatoes" developers that keep things like children's licensed games and studio b-projects going.  Their closures speak loud volumes about the state of the dedicated games hardware industry.  Loud volumes.  As does the meteoric rise in indie/smartphone developers.

The foundation of the console industry, which always had some cracks and creakiness about it, is completely rotting out.  The building's going to come down pretty soon, imo.

Some of us don't see this as bad news.

Like, as sad as I am for people who have worked in the industry for years and years to be losing their jobs and security, there is a WEALTH of content out there for gamers these days; indie games have really blossomed thanks to digital distribution.  And a lot of it is really, really well done stuff.  I find it hard to bemoan the lack of new Crash Bandicoot games when I get to play Super Meat Boy, Escapegoat, Avernum/Avadon, etc.

Also, I'm so fucking sick of hearing about MY CONSOLE OUTSOLD YOUR CONSOLE HUR HUR that I am really, really looking forward to a future where content is king and everyone plays on the same fucking box because there's only one.

I have no interest in 95% of the indie stuff or mod scene stuff that gets talked about on the Internet. I still personally prefer a great big budget game over nearly all the indie stuff. Although I like that there is an outlet for this stuff now and there is truly 5 or 10 percent of it which is great. It's like the iOS scene. Most of it is garbage. But occasionally you run across amazing stuff that makes the whole scene worthwhile.

It's probably a good game and all but what I've noticed is that my tastes are a lot more simple and mainstream than most people on forums at this stage. I don't like Minecraft. Stuff like Day Z has no interest to me. There are a lot of indie darling games of the moment that I've tried and just don't think are my cup of tea. Which isn't to say they are bad games. It more points up the difference of what people are looking for in games. I certainly have my niche personal gaming interests (I've been waiting for a game to scratch a certain political itch I have like Balance of Power and Hidden Agenda did back in the day) but I find that I end up buying a lot of this indie stuff and playing it for like 5 minutes and then never going back to it again.

- based on a gimmick that if you don't like then the whole game sucks
And this differs from non-indie games how?
