Capcom are upgrade dodging total.

Monster Hunter - running on the same engine since 2004. Next stop after 3DS = shitty phones

god for fucking bid they have to upgrade this. Though, i will give them their due, they do seem to have put some effort into this as they seem to have DOWNGRADED from MH3G.

Nope, there are actually quite few of us.

Downloaded it few years ago for my PSP,played with it like an hour or two...and I was like holy shit wtf is this garbage, :zzz :zzz :zzz, total waste of bandwidth :duh :duh
Deleted and never looked back again.

Not sure what Capcom would have to do to make this series appealing to me.

you are kidding , right?

How many games is it now without the game getting a significant upgrade graphically? It's pretty clear that it's a path of least effort for The Clap-com. Toot toot... mobile phones/Gree platform next for this series.

"but we are looking to expand bu bu bu ... " (we don't want to upgrade the engine)

The fact we have nthings pointing at the in engine (+ the extra animation/effects) as "oh this is pushing the 3DS to the limit" is pretty shocking. There's a high quality version of this video and it looks -definitely- sub PSP. I get that it might be one seemless overworld and every bright red brick might be ....

wait a god damned minute....

+ added platforming
+ mid air stomp attacks
+ monkey style new enemy
+ red destructable platforms
+ whole level looks made up of blocks

Why not just make moustaches on characters mandatory and give the player a gay colour changed side kick and call it Mario Hunter ?

Horrible Textures: The Game

That said I don't care if it looks like an N64 game if it does away with the atrocious amount of loading screens Tri had. Also they finally cut the bloom which made Tri/G look worse than they should have.

Trailer looks good.  I'm mildly interested depending on how different it is from past games.  My problem with games like this, Pokemon, Call of Duty, etc. is that each game plays to the base who just wants more of the same thing.  There are the nuanced changes and a new bulletpoint or two ("water" for Tri) but as someone who isn't part of that base, I can't appreciate or care for minor changes to what looks to be the same game.  So with MH4, I like the opener areas, platforming, multiple levels, and stuff, but I don't know if that all makes the core game interesting again.  And visuals are fine if it's going for larger, seamless levels.  Other monster hunter levels are multiple plots of flatland with loading gates between them.

Does this one have online play, btw?

it's just a shame there's not a more powerful handheld machine out there that could perhaps give extra graphic fidelity to the whole game. If only one existed, with a history of fans of that handheld maker also buying Monster Hunter titles in the past.

Alas, i can't think of such a machine :(

Some of them might still be on PSP but they're probably the super poor ones/pirates.

Come this time next year the 3DS will have two mainline games in the series, don't know why actual fans and not system warriors wouldn't have a 3DS at that point.

:fungle ALL THE MH PLAYERS ARE ON THE 3DS :fungle

And surely 3DS owners can't pull "them PSP owners all be poors" when the PSP costs -more- than a 3DS here in Japan. 3DS -is- the complete "budget not-really-into-games meff" option #1. PAINTED ON IN GOLD.

This statement has no correlation to what you quoted nor does it follow the conversation stream in any sense.

EDIT: Okay, just to move this forward, there is absolutely no way that all Pokemon players would migrate to PSP/Vita/Panasonic Jungle. A significant portion of people playing Pokemon would be fans of the Nintendo platform associated with it before they are Pokemon player. In the same way not every PSP player that happens to play MonHun would naturally jump to a 3DS situation. Some and I suggest a majority of current players will buy the platform(s) of their choice and buy games for it.

For something to sell as much as MonHun does there is no way there isnt a big chunk of people who got the game just because it happened to be 1)good and 2)on a platform they own. Outside of internet messageboards how many people would really own multiple platforms? Single handheld owners wont all have migrated.

I guess we'll see.  But I feel I should point out, we could use your *exact* sentence to describe, for example, FF6 to FF7, or DQ6 to DQ7.  The PSP is in its final phase in Japan, and PSP owners are doing their hardware upgrades now.  If Monster Hunter is a genuine phenomenon, they'll upgrade to a 3DS for the next one.  If it's not, well, I guess the series will die with the PSP, won't it?
I don't think it will die, i believe sales for MonHun 4 in particular will hit about 3 - 4 million. I believe sub 1million of those will be core fans that traveled specifically for MonHun and the rest will get it because 1)it is good 2) it is on a system they own. Of course the only way to get real insight into my theory would be to have a simultaneous releases across platforms, but yeah capcom :lol

"Real" fans as you put it are a smaller percentage of the whole of the PSP MonHun phenomenon. (This is my working theory). Those fans arent system warriors those are the primary audience everyone shoots at. Honestly just how many people do you think are multi console owners? Every popular franchise is popular because it reaches the casual fan.

They're obviously not all on 3DS, but I expect most of them will follow.  Unless you MH fans are willing to acknowledge MH is just some sort of fad and *not* the equivalent of DQ, in which case I'll just be over here doing the Yangus Underpants Dance.

edit: Okay, so Momo seems willing to admit it.  Momes, I think you're really overestimating the degree to which the target audience gives a shit about this platform warfare.
I think MonHun is far too young and volatile (my speculation we'll be able to readdress this in time) to fit comfortably alongside DQ. Do I think MonHun will stand the test of time saleswise? Absolutely not. But I'm sure as hell going to enjoy it while it is alive and kicking.

I think a better question to ask, Momo, is how many *families* own multiple handhelds.  And I would say, if there's a teenager in the house, and an elementary schooler, and a mom and dad who likely play games, and we're talking about Japan (we are, right?), I'd count about 5 handhelds right there if not more.
I haven't specifically attributed my thoughts to Japan alone, so I'd have to adapt my musings a bit given that constraint. Do we have further demographic breakdowns on who the average MonHun player is? I'm wondering if it would be people in a family situation such as the one you detail above or the 15 - 28 male perpetual bachelor/very young family like me.

All your students are rich and despise the Vita :lol

Anecdotally in my case none of my MonHun friends seem prepared to jump to the 3DS or Vita at this point. Of about 9 of us with a PSP I alone have a Vita and one other has a 3DS. I will be joining the 3DS crowd with MonHun4 English. Everyone here is a pirate though, I get actively derided for buying games :-\
