Dear Esther is nothing like a movie.

Well, it doesn't sound like much of a game either.

It's not really a game. Every Day the Same Dream borders more on the game/art/story line than Dear Esther does.

Bought Red Faction Guerilla (like Borderlands, this is the 3rd time I've bought this game), Cave Story, Dear Esther, and the Men at War Collector Pack.

Raban- I don't understand how that's not basically a movie that you just happen to move an avatar around in.  Games should offer some sort of challenge, whether it be of the reflexes or the mind.  Something that doesn't shouldn't be called a "game" in my opinion, and the people who make and enjoy them should be drummed out of the hobby.

Hmm. We have different definitions for what a game is. For certain, my favorite kind of games are the ones that offer cognitive challenge, because I feel like I gain something for the time I spent mastering it. But in my opinion, games are simply about interaction. The kind of interaction involved is up to the developer, and I think it's to the benefit of the whole of game design that we explore all kinds of interaction before settling on just one.

The problem is your taking your personal opinion and then sort of grafting it onto the public which doesn't really work without some data to back it up. What you described might work for you but I have a feeling it would not work for the masses.

Can you point specifically to where I did this? I don't actually care about what is marketable or saleable to the masses, though I'd be very interested to see how a game like Call of Duty would be received if the only player action available was movement.

There are cinematic games that lower the gameplay quotient to achieve a better story element. Heavy Rain whatever somebody thinks about it I believe does a good job of this. I could add games like the Walking Dead or Journey and some others to the list. But there is no current evidence to suggest that the people who play Call of Duty, Gears of War, Halo, Uncharted, etc are looking for this. They like the action mixed with setpieces and linearity. Because forum types may not like it doesn't mean the masses don't.

These two games are ones that I feel could be better with less mechanics. Simply because the mechanics that are there aren't deep, or engaging in even the slightest bit (to me). Every single one of your interactions in those games REQUIRES the context of the story to be meaningful or significant. I feel like that's straight-up bad game design, when a game needs to tell you why what you did was good or bad. As a player with an understanding of that specific game's mechanics, you should know already.

Every action I make as the player should be important and take precedence over anything else going on. I'll give an example of how Heavy Rain failed to do this, for me. In the intro of the game, I spent a lot of time interacting with the environment, opening shelves, playing with the children, and I found it genuinely interesting how much detail is there. However, at the crux of the introduction, during the mall scene where you are looking for Jason and find him outside across a street, the game robs you of your control. With how realistic the game had been leading up to this part, I feel like it was inconsistent that I couldn't just walk into the street and flag the car down, rather than watch helplessly as the story took over.

Speaking to my friends who finished it, they've told me that later on the game puts you in charge of rather significant events in the narrative, but that part frustrated me enough to lose all interest in playing. This is a premiere example of how Heavy Rain, and many other games, rob the player of their importance in a game to service the telling of a story, while simultaneously sacrificing consistent game design. Another much simpler example would be to look at a game like Call of Duty, where you can shoot many people, but shooting your teammates does nothing. That is inconsistent game design. Without the story being present (this specific assembly of polygons and texture map is your FRIEND), it wouldn't make very much sense.

I also wouldn't necessarily use that thread made by Ruzbeh to denote anything other than nostalgia and an inability to accept that the world changes and things aren't always going to be what you want them to be.

:lol my mistake

In full disclosure never played Esther although I've heard it described enough from the types who love game as art.

You have played it. You mentioned Journey earlier. The two games share the same exact design. The main difference being that you are rewarded with audio cues in Dear Esther, and visual ones in Journey. The only mechanics in both games is movement, though Journey has the addition of a jump, I'd classify that as movement.

I apologize for the wall of text, I tried to be concise.

EDIT: I just thought of another way to explain what I'm trying to say. In the games I've mentioned, Heavy Rain etc., the reward for completing a gameplay scenario is a non-interactive cutscene. In actually good games, the reward for completing a gameplay scenario is becoming better at the game.

I still fail to see how stuff like Dear Esther has any REAL interaction.  Sounds like you're a passive observer.  Doesn't sound like a game at all.  I would be all for taking this sort of thing out of the "gaming" classification of entertainment.  Call it "interactive wankery" or whatever and market it separately.

Journey works for me personally because its all mystical and all sort of in your head and artsy and abstract. It works as an art piece because we already categorize the elements it does as artsy. The more concrete and the more real world it gets, the more that simplicity wouldn't work for it anymore. Its like an uncanny valley thing. Instead I would feel the need to have more typical gaming elements in it, even if they are gaming lite elements like Walking Dead and Heavy Rain have. There is nothing less artsy than a typical shooter. Could somebody make a shooter artsy in the way that Journey is? I guess. But no one is going to do that because its probably not what most people are coming to it for when they play those type of games. That's not even to mention the multiplayer part which informs the single player part.

So yes in theory somebody could make the journey of shooters but I think there is reason why this is highly unlikely and its based on what people want to play. If some ingenious designer decides to try it and succeeds then more power to him. I just don't think its likely.

I think this is sort of a narrow way to classify games although we could split hairs and call some of these experience interactive novels if that creates a meaningful distinction. What I can say is that I don't mind experiencing certain interactive novels. In fact I prefer Walking Dead to most of the actual real adventure games I've played in recent years. And the experience for me scratches the same sort of itch. Which isn't surprising. The people who make games are the same type of people who are likely to make interactive novels.

I like the Demon Hunter class!

As for Dear Esther, it is what it is. I enjoyed it for what it is. It's an interactive poem with associative narrative.

The interactive part is what confuses me.  People say you walk around as someone talks to you.  Or by interactive do you mean you looking around the environment for insight into the story, sort of like an exhibit.  There's exploration, in a sense, but no puzzles or manipulating the environment.

Interesting. Personally, I don't feel like the artistic direction and design direction of a game need to have any significant connection. I see what you're saying, and there are likely many that agree with you, but I'm able to enjoy the art in video games regardless, and many video games have in fact introduced me to types of art I never considered before. I am only critical when it comes to the design itself.

There is nothing less artsy than a typical shooter.

I'll probably get laughed at, but I disagree with this. Call of Duty has art. Sure it's derivative, pandering art, but it's art. I'm sure many people lovingly and carefully put together the textures and models and environments and *snicker* story in those games, and that by itself is commendable. My concern comes from these games forcing the mechanics of a shooting game just because people expect as much, when really, it's clear the focus of the developer AND publisher is the spectacle and non-interactive elements.

Could somebody make a shooter artsy. I guess. But no one is going to do that because its probably not what most people are coming to it ofr when they play those type of games. That's not even to mention the multiplayer part which informs the single player part.

Yeah, that's where I fold my arms and make a sad face.

So yes in theory somebody could make the journey of shooters but I think there is reason why this is highly unlikely and its based on what people want to play. If some ingenious designer decides to try it and succeeds then more power to him. I just don't think its likely.

You're probably right. But I still wish a developer out there would humor the idea. The way things are going now, good game design is bleeding to death in an alley, a move to abandon what consumer's expectations are in favor of better design would be a step in the right direction, imo.

Observing is interaction. I see where you're coming from, but I don't think it's necessary to divide games into rigid classes. It's still a video game, just one that might be a little too honest about its wildly different intentions. I don't think everyone can enjoy it, especially not people with very specific definitions for what a game must be ;) but I think it's important, nonetheless.

Well, it doesn't sound like much of a game either.

I wouldn't call it a game. I don't think the devs call it a game. You don't exactly play it. But it doesn't try to emulate other media the way some games do.

If mainstream devs were to give as much thought to form and how to present their narratives as the creators of Dear Esther have, their games would benefit from it. But then again I don't see Dear Esther's particular approach working for them.

I played the first Runaway, it was atrocious. It has you fooling a drag queen into thinking she's tan by dipping some glasses in a puddle of oil so she'll let you borrow her sunblock, and then you need to put lipstick in a machine gun? And all the characters are ugly in every way. I haven't ever hated an adventure game more than Runaway.
