Personally, I can't stand using trackpads at the incredibly slow pointer speed they tend to default to, where you have to take multiple "passes" to move the cursor any distance. I always turn the pointer speed to near the maximum (usually 1 notch below it) and then when I need to move a shorter distance or precisely target some small icon, it's still not a problem because instead of sliding my finger I "roll" the tip of my finger for finer movement, which works very well and feels nice. While I came up with this method independently I always vaguely assumed this was how everyone who knows what they're doing uses a trackpad, but I never had any real basis for this assumption so, uh, here's a poll.

I set it to be faster than the default usually, but not the fastest setting.

Actually, I don't use laptops. My DM1-Z HP is just for beta testing stuff.

I put it on the lowest setting.  All that finger practice will pay off when I finally meet a girl who can look past my social ineptitude.

And about learning to use the IBM TrackPoint with my tongue.  I'll be such the catch.

I try to use keyboard shortcuts instead or plug in a proper mouse. When I'm forced to use a trackpad I leave it at the default settings.

Most trackpads suck, is the problem. The implementation is usually pretty poor on almost every non-Mac laptop I've used, but I liked my MacBook's trackpad so much, I bought a standalone one for my iMac.
