ICO actually came out in 1991...
« on: January 08, 2007, 12:26:28 PM »
It was called Another World/Out of this World. There's a fact for you ICO freaks who somehow find that game "innovative".

Quote
Another World, known as Out of this World in the US and Outer World in Japan, is a 1991 cinematic platformer designed and developed by Eric Chahi. The graphics and box art were designed by Chahi, while the music was composed by Jean-François Freitas.

While not a great commercial success, Another World was innovative in its use of cinematic effects in the graphics, sound and cut scenes, with characters communicating through their facial features, gestures, and actions only. This cinematic style granted Another World cult status amongst critics and fans.[citation needed]

Originally developed on an Amiga 500 for the Amiga, Atari ST, and MS-DOS platforms, the game was widely ported to other contemporary systems. Recent re-engineering of the game's code has also permitted it to be run on modern computers and consoles.

I never understood the love for ICO. When I played it seemed like your average shitty 3D platformer minus colour and fun.

I hope you didn't just find out about Out of this World, Himmy, because I was playing the fuck out of both Flashback and Out of this World back in elementary school.

And if we're going there, you can't forget to mention Karateka and Prince of Persia on the old Apple.

The original Prince Of Persia was so good...the perfect platformer IMO.  I could replay it over and over again.  Never got into any other game after that.  PoP2 was too damn difficult and was all over the place, and the 3D games just never sat well with me.

Not seeing the ICO to Out Of This World connection, though, sorry.

The third game in this series (Fade to Black?)  was ALMOST a breakthrough in 3d games.  It just happened to hit before some needed 3d innovations happened.

The cutscenes in Karateka were so awesome. I wish I still had that sense of awe for video games.

Please don't compare ICO to Out of this World.  ICO is horseshit on a disc, and Out of this World is a pretty good game.

If ICO is anything like Shadow of the Colossus, it must be overrated shite that only people like Himu would love.

 :lol

I tried to play ICO and just couldn't.  Shadow Of the Colossus didn't even interest me.  I was watching a friend play it recently, and he's just riding around this huge, EMPTY world looking for the monsters.  I sat there wondering how it was any fun roaming around an overworld devoid of life.

I love Shadow of the Colossus. Diablos is an idiot who only fought one colossi. I am pretty sure he took 30 minutes to find out how to kill it. Mother fucker.

I compare OotW to ICO because of how the games have partners that you use to solve puzzles, and it's another opportunity to waste that overrated piece of poopy. OotW didn't use a partner that I wanted to murder though.

That's one of my problems with the game. It's a two edged sword. On one hand, it adds to the atmosphere because it feels as if you're the only guy out there, and you're trying to kill these wonderful "beasts" who didn't do shit to you; On the other, there's a lack of things to do outside of finding the bosses. They could have easily made the game puzzle oriented and over took Zelda but nope. It's nothing but boss gauntlet. If they added puzzles and platforming before each Colossus, it would have been so much better.

SHadow of the Colossus has one of the WORST cameras I have ever used. Aside from that I enjoyed the three or so levels I played through, but goddamn is that camera lame.

Camera sucks because it always wants to do that 'majestic' angle which involves me looking at my characters chin as he runs away.

Heart of the Alien, for Sega CD.

And yeah, Fade to Black coulda been a contenda but nobody had really invented the "camera" yet.
