How do I turn of my PC in W8?

 :lol

Similar type of simple-dumb question- Was messing around with Win 8 at a store and couldn't find a way to exit out of programs using the touch screen...is the only way to do it with the Windows key?

you don't exit programs; they are suspended, ala tablets. press the windows key.

How do you close apps? when I shift tab I can see them all runnning still wtf, coincidentally how do you keep em open?!

They're actually not running, the OS manages their lifetime, suspends them while their offscreen and hibernates them if you're low on memory, so you normally shouldn't have to close them. If you want to close them anyway because they're misbehaving or to clean out your alt-tab list or whatever, you can use one of the following methods:

* Drag the mouse from the top edge of the screen (the cursor should become a hand) to the bottom
* Hit Alt-F4
* Right-click on one of the thumbnails in the switcher bar that appears when you swing the mouse around a left-hand corner, and click close (or just middle-click if you've got three buttons)

but yeah, normally you can just press windows key / click lower left corner / swipe from right and tap start to go back to the start screen and launch/switch to another app.

drag the tiles around to rearrange (drag it in between two groups until a vertical bar appears to start a new group), right-click to do stuff with them (like get rid of them. you can keep right-clicking to select multiple tiles and unpin them all at once), zoom out* to move whole groups around or rename a group

right click on programs in the apps / search screen or programs and folders in File Explorer to pin them to start. you can also pin some stuff from inside apps like individual people from the People app, websites from the browser, etc. you'd usually find this option in the right-click commands

also when your start screen gets really long you can quickly move a tile a long distance by dragging it to the bottom or top of the screen and ... seriously try it, it roxx

official tutorial is here

* by clicking in the "-" in lower-right corner, Ctrl-scrolling, Ctrl-"-" on keyboard, or pinch-zoom on multitouch trackpad or screen. this works in a lot of other apps/places too to see an overview of all the content and jump to a particular group or subheading etc.

the idea is it's in the corner so you can get there by moving anywhere in the general direction, yadda yadda. however what pisses me off is that this is only true in Start, inside of apps the button isn't quite in the corner so you can't do this, because of some snafu where they couldn't get it playing nice with the scrollbar in the app UI frameworks in time or something. it helps if you have a multitouch trackpad.

I will try to macro it once my Roccat Kone Pure arrives from Amazon.

It's a gaming mouse with enough buttons plus easy shift so I should be able to replicate it.

Photos don't show up in the photo app, FB pics do, but not the ones on my HDD. I have like 20 gb of pics in my photo library, but W8 thinks its empty. Ok.

Hotline Miami keeps crashing since I got W8.

Music doesn't show up in the music app.

The built in apps that replace Windows Live Essentials pretty much suck now (even after they recently updated them).

But I still prefer using Messenger app and Mail app to Essentials. Less bloat and apps get updated faster than the usual MS annual bullshit.

I upgraded but am going to do a full fresh install when I have the time to. I've got a nice new SSD I've never even used sitting in my room. I don't think its a MLC drive though so I was kind of hesitant. Plus there's the 1.5tb of games I have on my main hard drive that I'll have to probably reinstall a bunch cause I'm changing hardware.

oh, upgrading "works," but if you're a power user or internet junkie your registry and file system is going to be polluted nine ways to tuesday -- especially if you dabble in piracy or are just someone who is constantly installing/uninstalling new software (especially drivers). there's no way an upgrade can solve a bloated, toxic registry.

then again, i take pride in having tremendously slim, small installs and regularly clean the registry, boot/process configs, and file systems. i also have at least three partitions (OS/cache, Data, Games), and perform weekly backups. my computing life is fast, smooth, and stress-free. i only run signed drivers and do complete uninstalls and reg cleans before installing the new ones. my laptops ALL boot in under 10 seconds, i have never blue screened (except when i installed a recent firefox build), and i don't lose data.

it's like owning a motorcycle. if you want it to run well and stress-free, you put a little time into doing things properly.

upgrading? NEVER. upgrading is basically saying "take my existing fucked up environment and slap a largely new one on top of it, busted drivers and busted registry and busted app installations/configurations and all. NO PROBLEM AM I RITE LAWL!"

Looks like I got some homework to do when I have time. I'm amazed by your previous post thats some dedication. I clean my registry too but with all the dll's and registry hack's I've had to do over the 2 years since I built that computer its taken its toll. Windows 8 takes damn near 90 seconds on my I7 2600k rig to load to desktop.

it's a pirate's cross to bear!

also, none of it is that much work. the time half of you spend trying to get beta drivers to work or hack dlls to pirate/mod games is far, far more expensive than configuring an "at" schedule for backing up folders to skydrive or external. hell, i think i spend exactly 2 minutes TOPS a week tweaking things, and that's usually just editing msconfig because lync won't stay out of my fucking boot order.

Oh shit thanks for remind me about that. I gotta go find my word document with all those month codes. I heard they limited it to just 6 codes per month that can be added. I must have 4-5 years worth of codes. It helped to have cell phones to do that.

I too want a skydrive code. I heard you can get some awesome promotional stuff from the microsoft store that might have a code for 12 months for super cheap. I'll check it out when I stop by there tomorrow.

CCleaner, eh? Thanks! I'll give it a try. I've got a machine with a 4 year old XP install that is a little slow on startup these days. Then, after logon, there's a brief pause in the system where the mouse moves but the system doesn't respond to attempts to open icons or run applications. Weird.

I kinda want an all-in-one PC because of the desk I'm switching to (Ikea Galant) and was wondering if anyone had recommendations. I'm looking at this Dell one:

The downsides of all-in-ones are plentiful and I don't need you to rehash them for me. Just looking for suggestions. I would prefer non-touch if possible.
