It is going to be a long time before I upgrade to Win8.

Is anyone experiencing flawless enjoyment of it?
Does reading about how Win 8/RT/Surface is flopping and people raging at botched installs count as enjoyment?

Im doing a fresh install the way Shaka did it, hope it helps. I think I have most of my pics from my trips backed up...

But I did lose most of my music collection for sure. Plus 50gb in vidya and countless saves for games like mass effect...

I've been running it as my primary OS on my laptop and tablet since the Release Preview this summer, like it a lot and haven't experienced any significant technical issues. Flawless is a bit much though ...

I haven't had any significant issues. My mouse driver and punkbuster weren't working properly after the upgrade but uninstalling them and reinstalling them fixed that. But those were really the only issues. Everything seems to work properly for me.

the only persistent issue i have is not being able to scroll in certain metro apps.  i am not certain that it is my mouse or the apps themselves.  i wouldnt let it bother me so much except it makes me not want to use the metro interface as much.

Thankfully, I only needed AMD catalyst on my master race desktop pc.

What drivers are you guys missing? Usually new versions of Windows come preloaded with every generic driver to date.

Right now I desperately need ATKPackage which handles my FN key shortcuts. Without it I can control brightness levels (even virtually), keyboard backlight, screen switching, and other functionalities.

Speaker has a crappy quality with the stock audio driver, so I need Realtek drivers. I'm not sure if they *have* to be the ones provided by Asus, though.

I'm running Windows update and installing everything one last time, optional or not, to see if they offer what I'm looking for before I start hunting down alternative solutions.

You don't need Asus outdated Realtek drivers, get it from them directly: http://www.realtek.com.tw/

I'm using MS audio drivers since 7 because there was no difference between it and Realtek.

As for this ATKPackage, you can't find it or what? Compatibility issues?

Oldest trick is to hit Properties on ATKPackage  --> Compatibility and run it in 7 or vista mode.

I did that on one of my attempts, other attempts involved (allegedly) updated Win 8 64bit drivers. Still no luck.

It locked up, I restarted, then I got a BSOD seconds after I signed in. This most certainly caused by so something installed through Windows update. Unless I accidentally checked an optional update, it's probably one of the critical ones.

I'm performing one last reinstall (since I don't ave anything to lose right now), installing important Asus drivers from my model's web page, then performing Windows updates.

Yeah, most of my problems stemmed from trying to settle for generic drivers or up-to-date drivers straight from manufacturers while snubbing the drivers on my laptop's official resource page. As soon as I installed some of the more important drivers from there (old as they may be) as directed by prole, everything worked out fine.

You get a change language option the first time you install 8 as an upgrade, after that youre set again for ages I think.

- I didnt bother to install chipset drivers from Asus' website, thinking generic stock drivers would suffice.
- I was installing a buggy/incompatible driver for controlling my FN key shortcuts. Without it I wasn't able to adjust the brightness through the keyboard or otherwise.
- I was running into driver conflicts as soon as I installed LAN and Bluetooth drivers through Windows' optional updates (even though it correctly identified my devices). The result of those conflicts were cycles of lockups > hard resets > BSOD > Forced recoveries.

Honestly, I ain't even mad. I'm the kind of person who ends up enjoying these fuck-ups and learning from them. It's not everyday that I upgrade to a refreshingly new OS, so it's kinda exciting (the good along with the bad). As long as my important files are backed up, that is.

You can go into the picture/video library (in desktop) and manage it, remove folders shown.

I have an Asus ROG. What drivers did you dl?  I must say that my speakers are pathetically low on my laptop. Always have been.

From the G73 page on Asus website, I downloaded:
- Most recent Chipset driver available.
- Most recent ATKPackage
- Most recent LAN and wireless drivers.

Even though all of those date back to 2010, I found out they're perfectly compatible, more so than the most recent official drivers found elsewhere.

Drivers I downloaded directly from third parties:
- Most recent AMD drivers.
- Most recent Realtek HD drivers (with generic stock drivers, the volume was even more pathetically lo).

After that I ran Windows updates and updated everything; critical, recommended and optional. It most notably decided to update the following:
- A 50mb AMD driver update (even after manually updating to ver. 12.10)
- Qualcomm Atheros LAN drivers update to the one I manually installed from Asus.
- Boardcom BT drivers

These are the only drivers in installed thus far, afaik. Only after doing it in this order did I stop having the issues I was running into yesterday.

Why download all that outdated shit when Windows stock drivers do the job fine? I get the audio and unrecognized drivers like that ATKPackage but the rest? Windows 8 stock drivers are more than enough.

Aside from my motherboard drivers, the one I had to install was AMD drivers (duh). Other than that I allowed windows to handle the rest.

The only reason I opted to install the Asus LAN and Wireless drivers was because my laptop was freezing up almost instantly when I installed the ones offered by Windows. Those and the chipset drivers are mainly cautionary steps. I haven't installed any of the other 15+ junk drivers that came with my ROG.

I didn't run into *any* problems after I upgraded. Only when I performed a fresh install and started dealing with drivers did I run into the problems. :lol

I will say that getting rid of all the bloat that bogged my system down was worth the trouble.

I had Steam and my games all on a separate drive as well, but figured a wiped C & registry would still affect it. So I backed up any save that's not in the Cloud and deleted all my games + Steam.

I'm actually installing Steam right now!
