I'm not expert, but it's possible overhauling the some of the oldest infrastructure in some of the most densely developed and populated areas wouldn't be simple or cheap, and a hard sell when you're talking about places that get seriously hit by tropical storms once every few decades.
This storm was actually a statiscal anomaly.  FEMA has 1, 5, 10, 30 and 100 year storms that engineers use to figure this stuff (30 and 100 calculations are just used to mitigate disasters, not really prevent them).  This storm fell outside of this.  So anyone (Diunx) saying that anything could be done is stupid.

How bad did Long Island get hit? My wife's cousin lives there with her husband, and she's 8 or 9 months pregnant.

Pretty much all of Long Island is without power. There is widespread flooding on the South Shore.

Hoboken is half underwater and without power, but I just got out. Weee.

The north shore is also fucked, searingtown road is closed and so is northern boulevard due to enormous trees snapping power poles and power lines

What part? A lot of the coastal towns got hit with flooding, thankfully by me we didn't get it too bad... the parkways/expressway were pretty clean by last night. My mom's house in Smithtown has power but no cell service and no cable, most of the rest of the island is still without power. We're running on generators here at work, most traffic lights are off, and many stores are closed... (the nearby Gamestop was miraculously open, as well as WalMart/Target/Lowes/Depot/CVS). Lost a few roof shingles and there are downed trees everywhere but thankfully nobody I know was injured.

Geez, that must have been one wicked fire. There's just nothing at all left in that huge patch of houses.

one of the companies my call-center supports is a group of immediate care hospitals in Queens Long Island. They are pretty much completely fucked. The main and backup switch is down so there's no connectivity to their systems. The primary data center lost power and the generators are out of juice. Also the facility is flooded. the group of guys that supports them has been having a pretty easy few days.

one of them said they received a call from an angry doctor complaining that the system was down and when we were going to fix it. the guy's response to the doctor was "fix what? the hurricane?"

Was so close to being stranded in Nassau without a place to go for gas, luckily there was a Hess and a Gulf right next to each other on Hempstead Turnpike and the line was only about 40 min long... though on the way home I passed several other stations with lines of about 50-100 cars. Power has come back to large swaths of the north shore, I finally got power and internet (well, neighbor's internet) back in my condo complex today so I'm really happy!

Obama just authorized the military to bring gas to the island... this is all so fucking surreal. Driving past the few open stations (mostly just Hess) with a line of about 150 cars waiting for some gas. I'm staying in all weekend until this situation alleviates.

Guys, do we follow through with the plan even though Juice didn't die?  or do we go back to biding our time?

Gas situation still sucks. Sitting on line for an hour and a half with a bunch of restless LIers, that is if you're lucky to find a station that still has gas...

This is God's judgment for fixed gear bicycles, skinny jeans and shitty music.  REAP THE WHIRLWIND, HIPSTERS.

:bow COG :bow2

If Obama wins the election, how long will the Republicans spend blaming Sandy for suppressing voter turnout and thus illegitimizing his victory?

spoiler (click to show/hide)
The correct answer is "forever."
[close]

True. But there are other stupid-ass shenanigans which they will also still blame.
