lol @ diablo 3 being modern in design
they played it so safe and ignored advances in the genre
what's not modern about it?
The combat mostly, but some other missing features. What has kept me from D3, T2 and Path of Exile is that its still a lot of clicking the screen to repeat the same 2 or 3 attacks. They added some of the punchy physics of Titan Quest to the Diablo formula, but Titan Quest came out in 2006. Looking at the basic formula of dungeon crawling online coop sort of games or "loot" games, there's just far more interesting things being done with combat out there. Going from the physics and combat of Vindictus or even f2p junk like Dragon's Nest to D3 feels like a step back in time. Yeah, those aren't top down games, but I don't see why these games have to be top down. That feels like a real artificial limitation on the genre definition. Even if you go with that limitation, Magicka has way more interesting combat.
Beyond that, it's missing features like better inventory systems (Torchlight) and I want to say it could better use its online-only implementation.
