The vigil was well done, I don't remember the last time I saw an interfaith one. Also the president's speech was powerful

It's easy to forget that approximately 35 murders are committed each day in the U.S.

That's the worst thing, we ignore these until a dozen people get shot in one incident. We should have laws tracking guns in any state, not to make it difficult to own one but to make it easier to catch repeat offenders.

Mass shootings by random crazy people make it harder to see the damage that guns actually do.

the first one obviously to make gun owners look crazy and the second one so people would think "hey look at this AMERICAN HERO who said he would turn in all his guns because of what happened"

i just have to say that i find it funny that people are calling for more stringent hurdles to purchasing a gun after this incident.  the kid was 16, he wasn't legally allowed to buy a firearm of any type to begin with.  the only thing i see that should be called for is gun safe laws that require your guns to be locked away if you live with people that aren't allowed access, which is currently in place in at least one state that i know of.  my uncle and aunt and cousin (same family) are the biggest gun nuts i know and they have an autistic 21 year old (great kid), nothing has happened and nothing will happen in that household because they keep everything either on their person or behind lock and key. the kid wouldn't hurt a fly though, he's nothing like the little freak that did this.

Apparently you're able to tell that people are feds posing as callers to shows just from their voices, but you didn't know the kid that did this was 20 when it's all over the news everywhere.  Pardon me if I continue to treat you with the contempt you obviously deserve.

about the contempt thing though, i honestly feel bad for you dude, somethings obviously not going right in your life. you're not hurting my feelings, so don't worry about that (not that you were), so if that's what was motivating you to keep it up you might want to rethink things, i don't know.

nah it isn't just about that last post or even this thread, dude has been following me for like a year now, saying cunty things for no reason sometimes (although i'm sure he doesn't feel that way). being a former internet cunt myself (sup malek!) i know from firsthand 'sperience that it comes from a place of unhappiness and discontent with oneself.  he thinks he is bullying me but all he's accomplishing is making himself look bad.

isn't he 40 something years old? i'm in my mid twenties. shit is just sad.

...anyways online gunshops are 404'ing left and right, a fucking chink WASR ak which used to be $299.00 in 2011 is now $600.

General contempt for stupid people motivates me.  Your point that he couldn't buy a gun is moot since he's 20; he can't buy handguns but could buy a rifle or shotgun just peachy.

And let's talk about the responsible gun owner who left those guns where her mentally ill son could get them easily; why, certainly no one in the survivalist nut/doomsday prepper culture could be an irresponsible gun owner!  Le gasp!

You've pretty well demonstrated that you're talking out of your ass and don't know much if anything that applies to this incident, THREE FULL DAYS after it's been essentially the only thing that has been covered on the news; however, again you seem to be certain that the federal government has plants that are trying to paint gun owners as the bad guys, because to your disturbed, truncated little rodent brain of course they are.

YOU. ARE. FUCKING. STUPID.  It's offensive.  I need no other excuse to continue to do what I do in regards to you.  When you exhibit a shred of intelligence or decency, maybe I'll acknowledge it.  Until then, nuh uh.

the word you're looking for is ignorant, which i admit i am being with the news about this horrible shit.  a) i work a lot, and in a job that's physically and mentally exhausting so i don't find solace in getting even more upset by watching the constant coverage of this thing and b)watching the news coverage upsets me on two levels, the first being frustrated at the lack of being able to do anything about it and how it could happen and then hearing 'experts" talk about "assault rifles" (it wasn't an assault rifle) and how they need to be taken away from everyone because THIS IS WHY WE CAN'T HAVE NICE THINGS retardo argument.

the word you shouldn't be using is stupid, because i am not. sure i made some stupid choices which have led to me currently being under employed but i probably got better scores on both my SAT/ACT than you did

And let's talk about the responsible gun owner who left those guns where her mentally ill son could get them easily; why, certainly no one in the survivalist nut/doomsday prepper culture could be an irresponsible gun owner!  Le gasp!

actually that is exactly what i was saying a few posts up, any sort of laws put on the table should tackle that kind of behavior, and not punish the millions of other responsible gun owners like the family i know personally.

Even I realize that's impractical.  I just wish it was harder for crazy people to get guns.  I own four, but there's a difference between owning guns and fucking worshiping them.

this. we have a paranoid culture that we foster and encourage, promoting the idea that we stand alone. this sort of viral thinking really infects the minds of people with severe mental issues who aready feel outcast and isolated, and who have no prospects for a "normal" life or career due to economic or psychological reasons. it's the same base memetic pathology that infects the minds of suicide bombers and terrorists: bright, mentally fragile middle-class people who are pushed by their culture into a paranoid fugue, and then handed a means of destruction and told that their raison d'etre is a higher form of justice. bad, bad juju.

nevermind that our media is a fucking CELEBRATION of outrage. and then we tack on the last decade-plus contempt for federal and state support services, which makes outreach and monitoring impossible. we're a bunch of selfish fucks and these events are the wages of our skeptical, paranoid contempt -- the bloody artifacts of a society that believes it NEEDS guns to survive.

thaaaaaat said, the handwringing, thoughtless fear of my college intellectual pals on facebook is really annoying. banning guns is a simplistic panacea for a complex issue. BUBUBUBUBU DEATH TOTEMS, GET THEM AWWAAAAAAAAYYYYYY FROM OUR CHEEEEELLLLDREN

Well, I agree that it's not all about guns, and the toothpaste is out of the tube with regard to gun control and all, but come on, if it's all about mental health and marginalized individuals...is America, the land of the free, the richest and most powerful nation on earth, really the country you would expect to be the place to have had 61 of these mass shootings since Columbine? Easy access to incredibly powerful weaponry is what separates the US from most of the rest of the 1st world so the math is pretty obvious. You need to BOTH help these individuals AND reduce their access to the weaponry.

i don't disagree! but banning all guns because of some weird totemization versus sensible controls and legislation are two different things. there's plenty of sensible dialogues going on as well; i'm just reacting to the hysteria on both sides

god i hate playing the part of the moderate

Well maaaaaaaaaaybe the uninformed gut responses are getting amplified because the emotionally-charged aftermath of a public tragedy is the only time anyone talks about this.  Gun control of any sort has become such an obvious nonstarter that most folks don't even bother discussing it, and court challenges/the gun lobby have made experiments on the local level pretty damn rare (unless we're counting those awesome stand your ground laws).

So yeah, every time this comes up there are plenty of reasonable, moderate gun owners ready to tell people that there ought to be sensible, logical policy on ownership and access rules, but that popular ideas of banning certain models will be an empty gesture.  And these are all very good points, and anyone who wants the government to start messing with other people's hobbies would be well served to slow down and listen to those other people first.  Plus you guys explain how equally disdainful you are of the obsessives, with their crazy eschatology and their fantasies of playing tower defense against (presumably dusky) home invaders.

But during those quiet intervals?  The NRA and its fellow travelers lobby legislatures, get op-eds, talk on cable news, distribute candidate ratings, and keep an hawk's eye out for anything they don't like.  Basically, they do all the organizing and evangelizing that in politics we associate with giving a shit.  The moderate gun owners?  Where the fuck are you guys?

So the dude in that article chased people from a restaurant into the theater lobby, had his gun jam, shot someone, ran into the bathroom, "was cornered" and then was shot.  By a police officer.

Now, if someone in the thread did say that someone with a concealed handgun would never, ever under any circumstances be able to "stop an active shooter in a movie theater" then they can consider themselves truly and well pwnt.  Not gonna reread the whole thread to see if anyone did and you'll understand if I don't take your word for it.

But either way, I don't think this is quite as dispositive as you seem to think it is.

I'd also like us to encourage people to gang rush shooters, rather than following their instincts to hide; if we drilled it into young people that the correct thing to do is for everyone to instantly run at the guy with the gun, these sorts of mass shootings would be less deadly, because even a guy with a very powerful weapon can be brought down by 8-12 unarmed bodies piling on him at once.

I've been trying not to pay attention to this honestly, it's to fucked up.

It's really f'd up this happened, I feel for the people, families, etc that this happened to... No words can describe any of it, nor do they help. It's all booty chatter, especially from the media...

Also, it brings up gun control again and this just gives the gov more reason to suppress our rights even more. The US is getting to restrictive, if they had aloud a couple armed personnel in our schools, may it be a teacher, principle, etc. It would be less likely for this to have happen. In addition, we should also have our teachers trained or have them take a couple mandatory classes in self defense, martial arts, or some sort of combat type training. Just something that'll help protect the themselves and the children would be beneficial for everyone.

But then again, it's an opinion and as my mom would say "opinions are like assholes, everyone has one".

I'm in a thread over at "that place" and i'm being told to grow up because i think this is a stupid idea.

I mean - beyond the fact this whole "us gamers have to show a united front!" thing is nonsense, how do people think this looks to people outside of gaming who already think games are to blame?

"Oh and organised VIRTUAL CEASEFIRE?!"

It also makes gamers look like out-of-touch-with-reality childmen, not the opposite, and if this blows up then it's only a matter of time before some commentator goes "See!? Even gamers think that gaming is a problem"

to be serious for a minute, I can totally understand not wanting to play COD or whatever while this stuff is still all over the TV. That seems like quite a normal human reaction, as I understand such things. I cannot see the point in advertising your inaction or associating video games with violence any further in the mind of the public. There is something to the 'desensitization to violence' argument but it sure doesn't seem to correlate to actual gun murders. Simply not slaughtering innocents with guns, daily, is all any vid games advocate need to accomplish in terms of protecting their beloved pastime from regulation.

Free mental health for tens of millions who play COD in the US! Awesome, that trumps Obamacare nicely

Well, then.

Obviously McArdle's a nutter and this is too dumb to need refuting, but...

Back when I was a camp counselor doing whitewater rafting, we'd have to do something pretty similar with the campers.  If your raft rams into a large rock, you're meant to all crowd the side of the raft closest to the rock, to keep the raft from getting flipped.  This isn't instinctive at all, especially for 8-13 year olds.

So you'd have to explain this to the campers, quiz them on it to make sure they were paying attention, let them know before a particular set of rapids where to expect boulders, and get them all focused and prepared.

And you know what?  When we hit that rock the kids would jump away from it in fear and flip the raft.  Every.  Fucking.  Time.

press X to Mental Health!

to be serious for a minute, I can totally understand not wanting to play COD or whatever while this stuff is still all over the TV. That seems like quite a normal human reaction, as I understand such things. I cannot see the point in advertising your inaction or associating video games with violence any further in the mind of the public. There is something to the 'desensitization to violence' argument but it sure doesn't seem to correlate to actual gun murders. I personally just feel that the "virtual ceasefire" is such a colossal own goal that i'm starting to get riled with people who don't see WHY it's so.

I understand the premise and all, but this is a nonsense gesture that basically almost looks like it's reinforcing the idea that virtual gun play is somewhat equivalent to -anything- in the real world. It makes gamers look, at best, out of touch and, at worst, to be holding their hands up to say "yeah, this is an issue ... you guys are right!" - and i don't give a flying toss about the "well, we aren't admitting any guilt" statements in the narrative because ... well... that means fucking nothing.

Anyone outside gaming looking at this will pounce - and it's the height of naivety for certain industry commentators to be "where is the harm in this?"

basically - it's a bullshit idea that doesn't -do- anything , all it does is to just reinforce that gamers have no clue about reality. This needs flushed before it before it becomes something its not.

online activism is just lazy shit- everyone posts about how they're not going to do something that requires almost no effort anyway just to feel good about themselves- then they go back to being awful.

Im not saying im better- I don't run around fighting for things- but at least im come about the way I am honestly
