Good list. SRT:OG is ridiculous but way fun- Radiant Historia is just plain good. My issue with the Devil Survivor game is that they kinda need a faq from what I could tell. SMT: Strange Journey is great though.

Here's some more off the cuff ones, not particularly good...

Glory of Heracles
Contact
Magical Starsign
Pokemon Conquest
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon
Pokemon (aside from the obvious, they are good GRINDAN to me)
Final Fantasy 4 Heroes of Light
Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 1, 2
Suikoden Tierkreis
Golden Sun: Dark Dawn

• Etrian Odyssey
• Etrian Odyssey II: Heroes of Lagaard
• Etrian Odyssey III: The Drowned City
• Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light
• Infinite Space
• Radiant Historia
• Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor
• Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2
• Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey

• Dragon Quest IV: The Chapters of the Chosen
• Dragon Quest V: The Hand of the Heavenly Bride
• Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Reverie
• Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies
• Inazuma Eleven
• Inazuma Eleven 2: Blizzard
• Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer
• Suikoden Tierkreis
• The World Ends with You
• Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume

• Contact
• Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker
• Final Fantasy IV
• Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure
• Solatorobo: Red the Hunter
• The Dark Spire

• Final Fantasy III

Even though they're not ranked at the top I strongly recommend Infinite Space and Inazuma Eleven for originality. The story in the Inazuma games is made for kids and boring as hell, but the stylus controlled action parts of the game are excellent.

Edit: You know what. Feel free to dock a point from Etrian 2, 3, Devil Survivor 2, and Strange Journey since they're cheap rehashes.

Forgot to mention that I have a 3DS XL, so if there are any real good rpgs out for that I could get them as well... from what I can tell though the 3DS lineup mostly sucks in general.

Radiant Historia sounds interesting but FUCKING GOOD GRIEF is it expensive and none of the GS within like 50 miles have it.  If anyone wants to sell theirs or do me a solid and pick it up from a local GS and ship it I'd be willing to cover shipping and like $5 or whatever for your hassle.

Edit: forgot to mention that I plan on picking up Infinite Space as well, frag already recommended that and we have pretty similar tastes (the Knights in the Nightmare purchase was completely on his recommendation, but it sounds awesome from the reviews I read)

if you like FTL and the idea of commanding a spacecraft, Infinite Space is sort of like that, but more typical jrpg and long.

I replayed CT a couple years ago on my pc and it's still really good.  I'd probably give it a 4.5 out of 5.  Keep in mind that I'm gay for Fire Emblem though, so I usually give those games at least 4 out of 5 just for showing up.  We all have our own stupidity.

Golden Sun: Dark Dawn is OK, especially if you played the GBA ones. Pretty short. Just be careful of those damned PONR.

Still, it was missing...something from the GBA games. Sprite graphics? I don't know. It definitely felt different. And the plot kinda stroked out after the first part. And now I seem to be writing a piece against playing it.

Too bad it didn't sell well

yeah these RPG prices remind me of trying to buy PS1 RPGs after the fact  :-\

thankfully not too many are above retail yet.  and the used prices at gamestop are way better than the lowest on amazon for many of them.  But seeing how many are OOP, I think I should build the collection now before I get a 3DS.

Yeah, I was managing a GS at the time, and we had 3 sealed copies of Suikoden II for like $20 each.  I bought them all and made some serious bank on ebay later on.  :rock

I've come to the same conclusion.  I've decided that if it's around $30 or so and it looks interesting to me I'm just gonna buy it, I mean fuck it.  Managed to get a copy of Knights in the Nightmare in the original collector's packaging with the soundtrack for less than that today off ebay and was pretty happy.

Radiant Historia and TWEWY were my favorite original games on the platform. Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume is one I'd definitely recommend - I thought was a really underrated game, a cross between VP combat and your typical Tactics Ogre inspired RPG, with multiple endings, a great localization, and the fact you can sacrifice characters to gain new abilities. The EO series never really clicked for me the way it does other people, and I still have to go through stuff like Nostalgia, Heracles, Sands of Destruction, Strange Journey, My World My Way, and the Devil Survivor games.

I've only played the SNES version running on poor emulators and the borked PS1 version, but sure, it might be worth five stars. Did the NDS version add anything except moving the UI to the second screen?

I recently discovered the Atelier series and it will probably be downgraded to four stars once I play a few more of them. What's really cool about them is that they offer a lot more freedom than your typical Japanese RPG.

I have a goofy way of grading things... to me, only one game in any genre can get a "perfect" score.  So, Planescape Torment has always been the only rpg worthy of 5 starts, 10/10, A+, whatever you want to call it.  Baldur's Gate 2 is a close second- a 9.99 or whatever.  I really like a lot of jrpgs but to me none of them ever compare as the tropes and cliches of the genre just don't do as much for me, and in a lot of cases will actively detract from my enjoyment.  The best jrpg I've ever played is probably Dragon Quarter.  It's all personal preference, but yeah.

Yeah I think the reason why I can't get into western RPGs that much is that I'm not at all a fan of Star Wars/Lord of the Rings and their tropes/cliches. Usually the western RPGs I like tend to be ones that have a somewhat different setting (and preferably decent combat mechanics).
