I think the most interesting thing about this is how it was painted that the French were out to get him (which they were), but the biggest witch hunt for him was actually coming from Americans

europeans like the dumbest fucking "sports", I swear

Don't you dare say a word against cricket

tried to watch tour de france once. hella boring, most of the time the commentators were talking about local history of where ever the fuck they were bicycling through at the time.

Thats part of the charm of the tour though, since they don't always go through the same area you get to see a bunch of places in France you'd never go to yourself.

France is $50~ away from me, but even on the off chance that I wanted someone to read me a tourist guide while showing poorly framed scenic views I'd watch the travel channel.

It costs me minimum AUS$1000 to get anywhere interesting in flights alone (sorry NZ), Europe is AUS$2000 minimum. So there's some interest in me seeing where they cycle through.

I mean, it seriously says something when the fans of certain sports defend them with "well yeah it's boring, but it's *supposed* to be"

There's nothing boring about strategising to win a match that lasts five days. Or 21 days if you're talking about cycling.

The fascinating thing about the Tour De France is how a race that lasts for 30 days and where the field is together for about 95% of the time ultimately gets decided on two or three key scenes. The tough mountain stages separate the top drivers and the normal field hard. All those guys that won the previous stages in the sprint finals? They struggle now to even make the time limit. And in front it's a game of cat and mouse that can go on for hours between the top man and their adjutants and one acceleration can win the whole tour. Basically, there is an extreme rise in tension and than catching that moment how the best separates himself alone from all the other guys is exciting to watch. Absolutly no need to watch all the flat episodes, you can just watch the sprint finale there. But something like alpe d'huez is great from start to finish.

Also just having the Tour on in the background is soothing when there is a boring stage. Nice images, sound of the chopper and the commentators yapping about history and stuff.

To be honest I guess I don't follow cycling enough to care in regards to that sport. I'm more familiar with the baseball guys of course where I think its a slightly different situation since I feel baseball itself was complicit in that stuff.

That being said, Armstrong does seem like a dick based on how aggressively he seemed to defend himself. The cancer shit is meaningless to me. It's nice that he did it but the only reason he had such a platform to do anything was because he had it himself and he had the platform to advocate for it because of his cycling stuff. That doesn't strike me as especially noble.

I honestly don't really understand why he is coming out. If it was me and I had lied all this time I would just shut up about the whole thing and just leave it. But that's me I guess.

Yeah the problem in baseball has more do with it being a hypocrisy issue since baseball kinda wanted to pretend nothing was going on.

On a personal level I don't really care what these guys put in their bodies in relation to sports performance. But I think a sport should be consistent with what it says publicly and how it conducts its business. It's unfair to the guys who aren't "cheating" to compete with guys who are.

Oh Rick Reilly   :lol

Instead of maybe pointing that mirror inward and asking why you allowed yourself to be duped like an idiot, it's all "HE LIED TO ME.  :bawl"

Quote
Among my emails Wednesday morning, out of the blue, was one from Lance Armstrong.
Riles, I'm sorry.

All I can say for now but also the most heartfelt thing too. Two very important words.

L

And my first thought was ... "Two words? That's it?"

Two words? For 14 years of defending a man? And in the end, being made to look like a chump? Wrote it, said it, tweeted it: "He's clean." Put it in columns, said it on radio, said it on TV. Staked my reputation on it.

Quote
But here's the thing. When he says he's sorry now, how do we know he's not still lying? How do we know it's not just another great performance by the all-time leader in them?

And I guess I should let it go, but I keep thinking how hard he used me. Made me look like a sap. Made me carry his dirty water and I didn't even know it.

Quote
I guess I should forgive him. I guess I should give him credit for putting himself through worldwide shame. I guess I should thank him for finally admitting his whole magnificent castle was built on sand and syringes and suckers like me. But I'm not quite ready. Give me 14 years, maybe.

You're sorry, Lance? No, I'm the one who's sorry.

This is what happens when you start to idolize people and elevate them above the average folk. In some way, maybe tomorrow and maybe ten years down the road, you're going to realize that they're flawed and not nearly the sparkling paragons of decency and honesty that you thought they were. I realized that lesson when I was still a teenager, some people take a bit longer, I guess.

The thing is if it was somebody more naive I would agree. I just think Reilly is in a position where he looks like an utter idiot and now he has to puff up his chest and play the I was deceived card.

Here was an article from  Reilly a few months back.

Quote
So Lance Armstrong may have cheated, just like everybody else. Or maybe he gave up the fight because the whole thing was more crooked than San Francisco's Lombard Street. After all, USADA convicted him on hearsay, not proof. They don't have a single failed sample to hang their hats on -- Armstrong has never failed one -- so they took the word of riders like self-admitted liar Floyd Landis. The whole thing, all their evidence, is based on testimony, not tests.
Maybe these riders are lying, maybe they're not. I don't care. I'm wearing yellow Friday because I want Armstrong to know what he meant to me, my family and the dozens of people I know who took Armstrong with them into those chemotherapy rooms and radiation labs and the darkest corners of their fears.

Quote
In five years, nobody will want to check to see if Lance Armstrong's name is still attached to those trophies. But in five years, they'll still want him leading any peloton that's trying to chase down cancer.

http://espn.go.com/espn/story/_/id/8310275/armstrong-worth-honoring

The only thing that's really changed is now everybody condemning Armstrong. I'd almost respect Reilly if he just stick with this line of argument. I don't agree with it, but at least its consistent.

Can the full video of the interview be watched anywhere?

Apparently he said he wasn't sure if he had sued O'Reilly (the former team masseuse, who accused him in the past) because he sued so many people he lost track. Regarding the wife of an ex team mate which he also sued because she accused him he said "yes I called her crazy and a bitch but I never called her fat" in an attempt to make a joke. What a classy guy.

One flaw with the executioner line; all the other executioners were killing people.  He was doing what he had to do to stay alive and not get killed by Hitler.

I don't understand Armstrong's motivation for this. If you are not going to come out and be completely ashamed of what you did, then why open yourself to all these potential lawsuits and public scorn?

In that interview he seemed to still be proud of his accomplishments, because in his mind he was still competing on a 'level' playing field. Not only did he beat his opponents, he beat the tests also. Even his dickish behavior to friends, teammates and the media was excused as being 'carryover' from his fight with cancer. His amazing determination just didn't have an 'off switch' ... it wasn't his fault.

So he didn't come off as contrite at all and just further exposes that the guy behind the facade is a pretty unlikable fellow at his core.

Worst defence is saying everybody was doing it.

Nazi executioner: bu bu everyone is killing people

If everybody jumped off a bridge would you jump too?

One flaw with the executioner line; all the other executioners were killing people.  He was doing what he had to do to stay alive and not get killed by Hitler.

Much like Lance...  :lol

Tbh if your refused to execute people in the German Army you weren't killed but just placed in another unit that didn't do executions. Normally no one was FORCED to take part in genocide, it was just considered duty and dirty work.

Worst defence is saying everybody was doing it.

This defense is not used to demonstrate Armstrong's action were OK, but is used to demonstrate that Armstrong didn't have an unfair advantage over his fellow riders, at least those riders that were runners up to him. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/othersports/cycling/lancearmstrong/9497344/Lance-Armstrong-who-may-get-his-Tour-de-France-titles.html

I forgot that Stalin was the only genocidal maniac that existed back in those days.  You're right, the Nazi's probably just let it slide when soldiers refused to do their assigned jobs...  ::)

In this case they did, but don't take my word for it, just get a degree in history with this as your specialty like I did. Then you can be sure  ::)

But I bet you have the same level of expertise on this matter as I do.
