Maybe so.  HOPEFULLY so.

In the meantime, this is why we can't have nice things:

Sure would be nice to just put some fucking cyanide in their tea.

Reid spokesman: Senate deal will re-emerge after House fails-
Guys. They still don't have the votes. On October 15th in the afternoon. Boehner is trying to craft something the White House will sign (spoiler: they won't sign it), but that the tea party can support. And it's not working, despite them knowing this is the last shot. Boehner has no power, folks.

He's either going to be forced to pass some fantasy bill that has no chance of passing, or put his own bill on the floor and watch it fail due to not being conservative enough. Then the senate will swoop in.

An amazing insight into the mind of one of the worlds truly awful people

Scaremongering the people with the supposed affects of a default?! jesus - find me one NAMED economist that is saying "naaa, this will be fine" - I mean, I see lots of "my friend who is a debt expert" or "a source says that" in right leaning articles but NO NAMES, which is weird because I can find just about ANYONE of any merit saying "this is going to be a disaster for the global markets if we default" - but hey... Sarah Palin knows how to run the books and accounts of her small house and when Sarah Palin doesn't pay the electricity people don't cut her off - they know she's good for the money later (or some other stupid analogy that doesn't work)

And what wit! If the GOP force a default, then Obama should be impeached - if he moves unilaterally to avoid the ruin of the USA - he should be impeached. Infact the only way he can't be impeached is by giving in to the GOP. So that's the staple going forward : Dem presidents should be impeached for not doing what the GOP says? brilliant.

Obama - go on - move unilaterally and then tell them "go on then, impeach me - let's see it"

I think the reactions of the markets in the next two days should sway the vote, but who knows.  A unilateral move by the president is looking slightly more likely.  (Fun fact, since I pay my suppliers in euros I'd be pretty quickly fucked if this goes south.)

Why the fuck did he even try?  All day it's just been Boehner looking like a fucking idiot.

By the end, he had nixed the medical device tax and even the "increased" subsidy regulations; the only Obamacare related item left was the Vitter amendment. So in the end, his final hand was to leave Obamacare alone, but only fuck Congressional staff members. It's insane.

What does he gain from this? I figured he could go to the last minute and say "guys, we fought the good fight but it's time to move on." This has ended so bitterly today that he can't even say that. Senate republicans were holding out today, just waiting to see what he could pass. Boehner couldn't even deliver the smallest of olive branches  :lol

and - oh god - articles on "no, failure to raise debt limit does not mean default" err... yes, as long as Obama pays out of reserve/rearranges payme... OH WAIT that's an impeachable act according to Republicans.

Seriously - why doesn't Obama just barter with Impeachment? It's what the GOP want and it'll be a chance to show, on a global stage, just how stupid some of the Bagger values they hold are.

"This is the quality of thinking—or lack thereof—that has afflicted many GOP conservatives from the beginning of this budget showdown," the editorial read. "They picked a goal they couldn't achieve in trying to defund ObamaCare from one House of Congress, and then they picked a means they couldn't sustain politically by pursuing a long government shutdown and threatening to blow through the debt limit."

The Journal said that if the Senate passes its compromise to avert default and reopen the government, House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) will likely have no choice "other than to bring it to the floor and let it pass with votes from either party."

"At least that's better than getting the blame for whatever happens if Treasury stops sending out Social Security checks in order to prioritize debt repayments," the editorial read. "The politics of that are little better than defaulting on debt. Republicans can best help their cause now by getting this over with and moving on to fight more intelligently another day."

Like most of these theatrical displays ...  it's about affecting public perceptions than actually exacting some kind of change. They want the public to know they hate Obamacare and all that rot. They also know that people don't pay attention to politics, so they want to make this 'grand stand' to deliver the message to every American.

So, when shit hits the fan with another recession (which should happen again in the next 3-5 years), they can use Obamacare as a wedge to gain political leverage.

The Tea Party has already pretty much tapped the Obamacare well dry. It worked in 2010, didn't work so well in 2012, probably won't do much for them in 2014, and could possibly end up hurting them in 2016.

So republicans purposely collapsed their party support by 20-40% to make a political point to the public, who already know they oppose Obamacare? I'm gonna disagree on that bro. I think they did this because they thought Obama would cave, and they thought the people would support them. Meanwhile Boehner and leadership knew it wouldn't work, but had little choice but to appease the crazy folks for a bit. At one point it seemed like they just might get some concessions, but that NBC/WSJ poll pretty much ended the farce.

Moreover, I think those tea party members in gerrymandered districts genuinely don't give a shit about national views that don't line up with their district. Remember in Game Change when Palin kept obsessing over her poll numbers in Alaska, a solid red state, and demanded the McCain camp run polls in Wasilla? That's basically what's going on here. If you're a congressman in lily white Howell, Michigan, you don't give a shit what people in Detroit think of you, or what people in the rest of the country think either. Your focus is on opposing Obama, fucking over people in Detroit whenever possible, and voting a million times to repeal a bill that can't be repealed. That's why these people were sent to congress.

Democrats are currently leading the congressional generic ballots by 8 to 10 points; that's election wave territory. Obviously that will not hold through next year, but republicans just took a completely unnecessary loss and achieved absolutely nothing but making themselves look insane. Only 25% of seniors support their actions right now.

Basically if Obamacare turns out decent and the economy continues to slowly recover, dems will do fine next year. If Obamacare fails and the economy stalls, democrats will do poorly. I think many people believed republicans were crazy before the shutdown, so I'm not convinced it alone will lead to any gains. But it sure as hell doesn't help republicans.

I agree with you for the most part, and made a similar argument last week. The problem is that the GOP brand was already decaying amongst independents, and all this does is reinforce that process.

I'd bet money that the generic ballot won't be D+8 in July of next year, and that dems will only gain a net of like 5-6 seats. But republicans are fucking themselves in the long term. And when Hillary or whoever trounces them in 2016 perhaps then they'll realize they wasted a decade being crazy and didn't get anything out of it.

Historically, the Republicans have been the 'against party'. Since FDR they have defined themselves by what they are not for (sprinkled in-between nationalistic sentiments and family values).

Obamacare is just another pivotal law they can use to splinter more voters from the center and win elections.

It's a big country out there. Millions of people are politically apathetic for much of their lives until real life circumstances get worse and then they get the motivation to vote. Those are the future voters that Republicans are trying to reach.

I think the more important issue to emerge out of all this is the fracture between corporate Republicans and the Tea Party ideologues, which was on full display yesterday when Boehner's last ditch effort to save even the smallest bit of face couldn't manage to get enough of his caucus on board to go anywhere. No way does the Tea Party relent after all this, they're just going to push even harder next time [which probably isn't that far away, unfortunately]. I think that's where the bigger damage to the GOP brand originates from. Democrats, on the other hand, remained almost entirely united throughout.

But does Boehner have a reason to appease them now? I can't imagine Boehner letting this fight continue in January or Febuary, with the next CR/DL deadlines. He has no clout now, everyone knows he was bluffing, and this nonsense severely hurt his party. I just don't see him playing around again.

Well, see, according to the TRUE PATRIOTS in the House, they didn't lose because the strategy was bad, they lost because party leaders sold them out and/or the media didn't properly explain their position [among other reasons unrelated to their strategy being moronic]. I fully expect the Tea Party Gang of 80 to continue making noise and causing trouble until they get their way or they're booted out of Congress entirely.

A few years from now I could understand because the TP might want to split voters in the presidential primaries. But the people who vote in midterms are older and probably can't stand the party being this petty and useless.

The Tea Party did come into office in 2010 but that was because people thought they would make a difference.
