Actually, it kinda did. We all remember how the GOP got thoroughly routed in the midterm elections because of it, right? And how the democratic party successfully capitalized on the Repubs craven grandstanding and were able to keep control of the Senate and win back the house.

I think a government shutdown would be disastrous and harmful to the country, just like it was last time. But the GOP didn't pay any political price for it, its arguable that it was in fact a net benefit for them. Dismantling government seems to be the only thing they do well at all anymore, the shutdown doesn't go against their orthodoxy and satisfies their nihilist base. I think the only thing that will stop another one from happening is dependent on how much Boehner and McConnell would rather stick it to Cruz then do his bidding. I'm hoping they're still holding on their grudges.

Actually the healthcare.gov disaster happened shortly after the shutdown, thus giving republicans a lifeline. Another shutdown this year, especially one with Boehner/McConnell not even pretending to support it, would be a disaster.

) and I wish I could remember approximately when I had to start sitting in campaign offices after school and amusing myself by drawing outlandish agitprop... I want to say it was around a year out from the 1992 election. I mean yeah we're like 2+ years out now but he was fairly late to throw his hat in the ring iirc.

And yes I did actually draw outlandish agitprop. I remember an office finding one piece I did particularly amusing involving a depiction of Earth from space. Like war, people never change.

Seeing this thread makes me think of Geert Wilders so much. Politicians also refused to take him seriously and scoffed at him, but he just kept on surging in the polls. Just like Trump is now.

These types of reactions from politicians only make Trump more appealing. A lot of people don't necessarily agree with Trump, they're just unhappy voters that want to elect Trump just to shake shit up. If the typical politicians say he's unelectable or whatever, that only makes him more appealing and voters will want to prove those politicians wrong. Voting for Trump will essentially make them feel they are slapping the establishment in the face.

I don't think Trump has any real appeal to conservatives other than the fact that he'll send a clear signal about how disappointed they are with Republican politicians. Since 2006 basically conservatives have felt like they're losing power and in the nearly 7 years of Obama being in office, they haven't gotten anything on their agenda done other than trying to set back liberal policies.

A vote for Trump is just their way of giving the Republican party a big fat fucking F. I am going to predict that Republicans will have lower than normal turnout in the general election since they'll have cooled on Trump by then.

You're forgetting that Trump is riding anti-immigration sentiment pretty hard. It's an issue that appeals to lots of conservatives but one the GOP has been loathe to talk about because it's only a loser. Remember the backlash against Bush when he attempted some sort of reform? The gop forgot that but it probably had a lot to do with the Tea Party getting formed so quickly, since the players were the same.

Yeah the xenophobic segment loves him for how open he is about it but I think (hope) that most conservatives are so old and have been through so many elections that they would know you need to not look like a total asshole in order to win. Dubya made some pretty big policy mistakes of the military variety but he at least seemed like a nice guy and so he won reelection.

Tales from the trench: I do some interstate work, but most of it is with fellow blue state socialist dystopias. One company has enough of a presence in a "business friendly" tax state to have a filing obligation and this year they had to pay an almost symbolic amount of corporate income tax for the first time I can remember because of the way this state calculates taxable income, which they're F U R I O U S about. Meanwhile I don't think I've ever seen them pay corporate income tax in the state they're domiciled in (a dystopia). It's almost like statutory tax rates are nothing but a talking point and the method of assessment is in fact what actually matters.

are you talking about the Biden-Brownback resolution? AFAIK, that would have delineated autonomous areas within a weaker(lol) Iraqi federal government, not dissolved the state altogether. The Kurdish leadership was the only camp it resonated with; meddling in state-building and undermining central authority is a pretty surefire way of triggering anti-imperialist rhetoric from the entrenched powers that be in Baghdad (or Kabul, Riyadh, Jerusalem, Ramallah...).
