With that 9/11 tweet and his answer to whom he would like to see on the $10 bill, it might be possible Jeb has a brain tumor or something equally as serious:

Ted Cruz: Rosa Parks (but on the $20; he'd keep Hamilton on the $10).

Damn, I actually like this one. :ohhh

Yeah that surprised me as well. It's sad that I'm surprised by a cogent answer from one of eleven presidential candidates, though. They should all be able to give one.

Its genuinely the most impressive thing Ted Cruz has ever said. I agree unequivocally with it.

Its such a gimmie question too, why the hell did only one guy out of eleven have a good answer for that?

Fun fact: George HW Bush was a strong supporter of family planning, helped pass legislation that funded Planned Parenthood and other similar outfits, and earned the nickname "Rubbers".

If you want my gender studies survey course analysis (which I'm comfortable in saying no one does), I can't really say I'm surprised that a question like that decimated the field on this episode of America's Next Top Doctrinaire when the ideology in question is nakedly anti-women.

Responses like Huckabee's are exactly the sort of thing I'd expect, really. Equal parts disdain for trying to reverse the collective amnesia wrt the contributions of women and thinking of women as anything but WAGs.

Even Carly Fiorina's response was on script to a certain extent.

E: Since we're sharing fun facts, in her time Susan Anthony was accused of trying to destroy the institution of marriage. For reference, no women were enrolled in university when she took up the cloth so to speak.

Would have been nice to see them squirm with a question concerning race relations in the current era too but I guess I'll settle for them tripping over themselves on women and islamicphobia till after the primaries. Honestly thought CNN would have shot one out since they were nailing a couple dudes to the wall during the time the moderators actually woke up from their stupor.

Guess that's too tough a question though.  :doge

As an addendum to my last post, you even see remnants of this today. A married filing joint tax return is the husband's tax return with his wife's income and deductions reported on it. They put both of your names at the top, but it's tracked by his Social Security Number. It was only very recently when the IRS actually started requiring preparers with representation rights to get a signed power of attorney from each spouse in order to speak with them.

(I think married taxpayers should have their own kind of tax return to solve this issue.)

It's interesting that there's no suffragist/feminist analog to MLK or Rosa Parks, a universally recognized historical American icon, whose image has been scrubbed enough that anyone could name them as a hero without thinking regardless of party (or even be claimed as conservative).  I guess Susan B would be the closest, but it's not the same.

Well isn't Rosa Parks the feminist/suffragist analog ? Her actions did help widen the electoral body...
Anyway, I'll be honest, if someone asked me that question for France, I certainly wouldn't be able to name a lot of relevant answers for that despite being a tad more versed in history than your common citizen, and none of those would be the XVIII/XIXth century "suffragist". Still would have done better than the Repub loons, and I'm not even american.

I enjoyed Trump ignoring his first question to instead randomly insult Rand. Dude is so beneath you that you gotta call him out and make up poll numbers right at the start.

Bush, Walker, and Christie didn't do themselves any favors tonight, did they? I think Walker stretched the facts too far for even a GOP debate.
I think Christie is the secret under the radar winner from the part I watched.

This was a great run by him, especially shooting down Carly's interruptions, and everyone else started stealing from it ("let's stop fighting with each other and talk about the issues, like the mass murder Barack Hussein Obama personally committed with Planned Parenthood") right after:

And he never strayed from "pro-life", "was in the same general region as 9/11", "jobs." He'll get a bump if people forget he side-hugged Obama.

http://www.buzzfeed.com/mckaycoppins/sources-scott-walkers-donors-are-circulating-rumor-about-cam#.yjYDjbEG2
Quote
As Scott Walker’s presidential bid founders, some in the candidate’s orbit are participating in a whisper campaign against his top strategist and campaign manager, Rick Wiley.

A number of Walker’s donors and supporters have been circulating a rumor about Wiley in recent days, apparently aimed at discrediting him and bringing about a shakeup in the organization, according to two Republican sources. The sources, neither of whom is affiliated with a presidential campaign, said they heard the rumor from people in Walker’s camp. They also said an anonymous letter about Wiley is circulating in political and donor circles, though it is unclear where it originated.

BuzzFeed News could not confirm the details of the rumor, and will not publish it.

Asked about the whisper campaign, Walker spokesperson Kirsten Kukowski acknowledged the rumors but said they were false, and that the candidate wouldn’t be distracted by “the sideshow.”

“Governor Walker routinely says we need to talk about the issues instead of the sideshow because our country deserves it,” Kukowski said in a statement to BuzzFeed News. “We have a plan to share Governor Walker’s WI record of reform and results and his vision with the American people, and will continue to execute on it. This isn’t a reality show, the whisper campaign isn’t based in reality and has no place in the process to elect the next president of the United States.”

The influential conservative talk radio host and blogger Erick Erickson appeared to allude to the whisper campaign Thursday on Twitter: “Lots of different people all sending me the same rumor about a particular campaign manager caught indecently at the Ohio debate.”

A problem with McCain's answer that I have seen brought up by Arabs is that he said "No, he's not [an Arab]. He's a decent, family man," as if the two are mutually exclusive.

I don't know if the people in that crowd could have handled making the distinction if pointed out anyway. IIRC they booed him afterwards. When you're talking to a crowd who's already made up their minds regarding the brown man with the scary name making a run for the presidential office, there's probably no winning but at least he had the backbone to face that question head on and not sound like a lunatic.

Like straight up it's been a race to the bottom on the GOP end and it's embarrassing af to watch what is essentially a shitshow get progressively worse each debate.

Fun little subplot in right wing politics.

On one hand you've got Coulter and Mickey Kaus saying conservatives should focus less on ISIS and terrorism and such, and more on building a border wall.

On the other you have Charles Krauthammer and Michael Gerson telling the GOP to suck it up and go after Latino votes so it can regain power and prosecute wars in the Middle East.

If only they adapted intersectionality for their own purposes, they could come together and hate all brown people equally.

Isn't Bush 43 also the US President who, by far, send the most aid money to Africa notably for health programs ? Part of it tied to some of that shitty abstinence agenda (Christian bigots gonna be bigoted), but still with a certain measure of success. Googling that, it seems even Bono praised him  :o .
I know it's the oldest excuse in the book but he really had a toxic entourage. That doesn't absolve him or anything (The buck stops with him whatever the context), but overall I have the feel he really bought into his own compassionate conservatism. My understanding is that he also had real reach (certainly more than his fellows) in the latino electorate and that the GOP would be maybe less annihilated to them if he went through with a more ambitious immigration reform that was considered but ultimately shelved.

The GOP really seems to have missed some crucial turns there.

I still think he's the nominee.

Youtube caption fail.  That's not what he said.  :P

I mean, these candidates are saying some truly stupid shit every day, I'm not sure it's necessary to try and twist statements to be something they're not (quite).

Biggest waste of the debate was when someone said they'd arm the Kurds and Jake Tapper didn't go to Trump for a response.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
By the way, I do think the Kurds, while we're on it, I do think the Kurds are not being utilized properly and not being treated properly by us.

Yeah, I was expecting some drama between Trump and Hewitt.  Sorely disappointed.  :'(
