Yeah. From all reports the US has been looking at some kind of negotiated peace as an endpoint to this clusterfuck, and you have to think some kind of partition is waaaaay more likely than reconciliation and power-sharing with the previous borders intact.
At this point I'm not even sure what the path to a negotiated peace would even look like. The rebels seem super fragmented, the regional patrons who would hopefully push the factions into negotiations don't have any trust among themselves, and everyone might figure "keep fighting so you have the best position on the ground when the music stops" is the best strategy. "Never negotiate from a point of weakness" blah blah blah. Just a huge fucking mess.
