I don't see Trump winning Iowa due to the caucus process/Evangelical voters...but after that? NH  seems winnable, as do the other two early states.

I don't believe it will/can happen but imagine if he was the nominee. The GOP might not recover for years  :lol

I don't get this assumption that he probably won't win any states. Right now he seems to have locked in the votes to win most of the first few states (exception being Iowa where Cruz has a narrow lead). And he'll probably win most of those early primaries until enough candidates drop out and endorse another front runner.

The main obstacles for him in the next month is that either he does/says something outlandish enough to lose his supporters or like half the top 10 candidates drop out. Do you really think there's a good chance of either of those things happening?

The biggest challenge to Trump would be if three of Rubio, Christie, Kasich and Bush were to drop out after New Hampshire. Presumably the bulk of their supporters would go to the surviving member of that group. This assumes that Cruz hangs on and that Trump can't pick up most of Carson's supporters when Carson drops out.

By Super Tuesday, you could have an establishment candidate with the support of nearly all current Rubio, Christie, Kasich, Bush supporters, which could very well be enough to beat Trump.

However, that Voltron establishment candidate might not be enough to beat Cruz if he picks up Carson's voters.

This also assumes that basically none of the voters supporting the establishment Big 4 cross over to Trump.

YMMV

The U.S. created 292,000 new jobs in December, as hiring sped up toward the end of the year. Economists polled by MarketWatch had expected a gain of 215,000 nonfarm jobs. The unemployment rate remained at 5%, largely because almost a half-million people joined the labor force.

Employment gains for November and October, meanwhile, were revised up by a combined 50,000, the Labor Department said Friday. The government said 252,000 new jobs were created in November instead of 211,000. October’s gain was raised to 307,000 from 298,000, marking the biggest increase of 2015.

In a surprise, average hourly wages paid to American workers fell a penny to $25.24. Still, hourly pay has risen 2.5% in the past 12 months, matching a six-and-a-half-year high. The amount of time people worked each week was unchanged at 34.5 hours. The labor-force participation rate rose a tick to 62.6%

Because one CEO's 45,000,000 earnings balances out with like 40,000 people making 7.50 an hour I assume? Makes them look better. And I assure you 1/2 this country isn't making 25 bucks an hour.

Why do you always rely on anecdotal information? The BLS report has showed throughout 2015 that more full time jobs are being created than part time. Most of the jobs created in the very report linked today aren't retail or Starbucks type stuff, despite the obvious seasonal rush in hiring.

The economy isn't perfect. There were some bad jobs reports in 2015. This is not one of them.

Sorry Walrus I couldn't wait for you.

I don't think I would have been able to deal with the victory lap we'd be seeing right now if President Romney had unemployment at 5% and a constant string of solid to good BLS reports. Especially where I work? Hell no. I'd have to quit.

You'd never hear conservatives talking about participation rates or pretending to not understand what seasonal employment is.

Maine's odd.  Leans solidly Democratic in presidential races, has had two independent governors since the 70's and almost had a third (both times LePage got elected it was in three-way races), and had Snowe and Collins, the moderate GOP ladies.  It's like some weird bastion of Eisenhower Republicanism.

What are you talking about?

- There have been around 14 million private sector jobs created since Jan. 2010
- 2014 and 2015 have been the two highest years of job growth since 1999.
- Obama has presided over 6 million more private sector jobs than Dubya did (and he still has a year left, which would mean another 2-3 million jobs if trends keep up).
- On net private sector job growth, Obama has 9 times more jobs than Dubya did.
- If trends continue, Obama will able to match the total number of private sector jobs that even the great RONALDUS MAGNUS presided over!
- If you count ONLY the positive job growth that Bush had, and compare it to do NET job growth (meaning we allow Obama to keep the job losses on the record as well) Obama still comes out ahead by over a million.
- Not only that, but Obama's been able to do all this with more regulations (including the biggest regulation the world has ever seen, Obamacare), more spending (stimulus), and more tax hikes on the job creators than Dubya did. If nothing else, the Obama years prove (once again) that the pro-trickle-down crowd has been horrendously off with their predictions that anything other than Grover Norquist approved economic policies would wreck the economy.

There's no cherry-picking going on here. Obama has at the very least done better than Bush on almost every economic measure. (And even the ones where he didn't, like the participation rate, are not due to his policies, but things like more people retiring and such)

Odd thing is that libruls haven't been super positive about the economy for most of Obama's presidency.  Might just be the ones I read, but they were all stressing how soft the recovery was, in the context of whether the Fed should pull back.

Also, the employment numbers are worthwhile even if Obama gets no credit whatsoever for them, just for disproving the null hypothesis of the JOB KILLING OBAMACARE BILL.  Ditto Bill Clinton's tax hike, which produced some outlandishly dire predictions at the time.

I used to read a lot of Krugman back in days when NYT was free to read. He seemed to know his shit. Only thing I know about US/world economy is that proper measures weren't taken after the 2007/2008 shitstorm and that there's gonna be something similar but worse in the future because of that. Oh yeah and the recovery for the US wasn't really that good because it also changed the economy in a bad way for a lot of people or something despite the good stuff. :doge
Hey if you clear your cookies you can keep "reusing" those 10 free articles just so you know.
Krugman's age is showing though.

Rand Paul and Carly Fiorina have been booted off the main stage at Thursday's Republican primary debate, Fox Business Network announced Monday evening.

The seven candidates who will appear on the main stage in North Charleston, S.C., are Donald Trump, Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio, Ben Carson, Chris Christie, Jeb Bush, and John Kasich.

The candidates invited to the earlier, undercard debate are Paul, Fiorina, Mike Huckabee and Rick Santorum. Paul told CNN Monday evening his exclusion from the main stage was "a mistake," and he won't attend the undercard debate. "We will not participate in anything that's not first-tier," Paul said.

It seems like the more they pander, the less they know how to pose for a picture without making a weird face. Carson isn't even looking at the camera...

The chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) on Monday slammed the Republican Party's selection of South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley for its State of the Union response, calling it "appalling," according to a Post and Courier report.

"It's pretty clear that Nikki Haley is being chosen because the Republican Party has a diversity problem," Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (R-Fla.) said on a conference call.

You know you don't find that out until at least the third book. It's how they string you along.

When I win the Powerball I'll pay Charlie Rose to have her and Coates on his show.
