Well he hasn't done any prep work or mock debates so...

I'm sure he can get away with a lot of generic, vague answers ("Syria is a mess, Obama and Hillary aren't leading. When I'm president we're going to lead again, and win again. We have to fix that mess.") there will also be some very specific questions asked, He's going to look unprepared and stupid.

I guess the question is whether the media discusses it. I feel confident saying he's going to put on the worse debate performance (in terms of having a general understanding of issues) in the modern era. You can't convince me he's going to do better than Kerry, Obama, McCain, Romney, Carter, etc etc on basic issues. And yet I wouldn't be stunned if the responses are: "defiant...strong...didn't back down...held his own, on his own terms...etc."

I want to say he bombs, the media admits it, polls show he lost bad, and Trump responds by refusing to attend the second debate due to the system being rigged.

I doubt he will dip out on further debates. That would make him look like a coward and that's the last thing a dude with his ego would stand. He will do the same as he always does. He will bluster and bluff his way through the debates and nobody will challenge him that what he is saying is bullshit because nobody has done it the entire time. The people who like him will point out how he is "speaking the truth" and the people on the other side will point out that he's talking bullshit.

Mainstream media will call him on it and it won't matter to his core voters. I expect Trump will do his act (Nasty or subdued, whatever variation) and that they will debate over each other head. He'll probably try to call out Clinton out on political jargon / bullshit, he is good at that. His whole schtick will be to paint her as an out of touch member of the establishment, she needs to strike a good balance between schooling him on politics but appearing approachable. Call him out too, but I suspect she should avoid to go down at his level.

I want to believe that quitting midway would hurt him though, it's not the 435th primary debate, I don't see him backing off but with Trump, who knows ? He would need a good spin.

i think it will come down to whether the public finds a bigger problem with trump constantly interrupting hillary or with hillary dodging every substantial question about her shortcomings
i can't imagine a scenario where he doesn't do all the debates. there would be less than a 0% chance he wins if that happened
