I felt like Trump actually was able to make Clinton falter very early on to very easy bullshit.

Within seconds he got completely decimated all the way through the end of the debate and resorted to word salad and frustrated bullshit.

 Lester Holt was largely useless.

Hillary looks better and more in control when she isn't always smiling.

 Hillary won.

But Trump has the better temperament.

I think the thing everybody is missing is just exactly what this debate will do going forward. First of all, [candidate] won overwhelmingly, it wasn't even close as [candidate] had a complete command of the issues and [candidate] had nothing but gotcha responses. Even with both [candidate] and [moderator] against them, [candidate] continued to dominate each issue and refocus the debates to the important policy questions. You could tell at times that [moderator] was surprised and impressed at how well [candidate] was handling the debates and continuing a withering attack on [candidate] even as [candidate] tried to distract away from [candidate]'s incredible flaws and corruption compared to [candidate]'s long service to the country.

It'll be interesting to see just how much of a boost [candidate] gets from this, as it was so lopsided we haven't had a debate like this where one candidate so clearly won when viewed objectively. Once all the media and politicos distill through the noise their overwhelming consensus that [candidate] won will almost surely push [candidate] into a strong polling advantage. Unless there is a drastic change in the race through outside factors, [candidate] should continue to control the future debates and seal up [candidate]'s victory as [candidate] flounders and falls farther and farther in the hole. Not even [moderator] and [moderator] will be able to save [candidate] from the principled and intellectual assault [candidate] deploys.

This will be remembered as the night [candidate] won the [year] election.

That was a keyboard mell function.  I might have said otherwise other times, I think it was 6 or maybe it was 5 other times, there are too many times, but look, talk to Sean Hannity, I said, and know oen wants to talk to Sean Hannity about this, I said 'Its the keyboard.  We need better keyboards' and you bet I can get better keyboards, bacause I once owned a keyboard buisness shares for which i got great credit for and the the league of keyboarders is going to indoores me next week.

if the polls don't budge after this then short of him wanking off at the podium and making monkey noises during every time obama is mentioned i'm not sure how you can hurt him.

yeah, I think it was a good strategy to just sit back and give Trump the rope to hang himself.   Watching some of the post-debate coverage, he's getting fact checked into the ground for the potpourri of nonsense he was spewing out.

She also didn't want to fall into the trap of trying to out-bully Trump like Rubio, Cruz and Jeb! did

Getting the most time during the Republican debates was enough to push him over.  It might be what helps sinks him in the general.

I pretty much agree with TPM's take: Trump had some control really early on, but Hillary completely controlled the debate by about 30 minutes in and just made Trump look like an ill-prepared fool for the next hour.

He's an idiot. He performed like an idiot.

It doesn't really matter. Most of his voters are idiots too so its moot.

The election is the same pre-debate as it was post-debate.

Hillary has a slight edge (and has always had) due to presidential voting demographics but there are enough idiots to always keep you scared that it could flip if things turn out really close.

I don't buy this.  Sure, his supporters will not be convinced.  But the amount of undecideds is still quite large.  And I think her performance did really well with said undecideds.

That's what I'm thinking. We'll see how much of a bump Clinton gets from this, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's still a toss-up because most of the Trump voters are already decided and undecideds either skip out and/or don't pay attention until the end to where a lot of his bad points will just be handwaved away quickly for the stuff they stand for. :/

We'll see how the polling goes. I'd be more than happpy to see a bump. I'm just not overly expecting one. The only time Trump has went to shit is when he basically attacked a grieving family. Everything else has generally been forgiven by people despite how odious. I don't think there was anything on that level tonight. Just his general idiocy which apparently doesn't faze a lot of people.

I think the Trump voters are just feeling like they were a demographic that was left behind in modern America. Which is why Trump tries so hard to claim bullshit things like that stop-and-frisk protects black people or that he had nothing to do with birtherism because he knows it would appeal to those blue collar whites who don't want to feel like they're voting for an actual racist.

But Clinton straight up called him a racist and he didn't say shit. I was only listening but it felt like he was just caught off-guard the second he got called on his bs. Clinton's focus wasn't on humiliating him like I was worried she might do, but rather on showing Americans how to spot a con artist. She probably won't convince many people to swing completely from right to left but I think a lot more people are going to walk away believing that Trump is not an option.

You know, the silver lining of your cloud is really that Trump is maybe one of the most benign version of (far) right demagogue you could get, he's really not all that shrewd and sounds lazy (or undisciplined).

White working stiffs might be apathetic or even sympathetic to the racism, but they're not oblivious to their own interests : him being callous about the financial and housing crisis will not go too well with some of them, I hope.

Not benign in terms of what he promotes, but in the sense that a smarter dude would be way closer to actually winning it and wouldn't have provided such an awful performance yesterday.

yeah, but by the virtue of 'Amurriccaaanns', a more polished, articulate, demonstrably smarter demagogue perhaps wouldn't win just because they're you know, visibly smart. Shithead voted for a shithead that was just like them. And in fact in this year's crop they were not lacking for options for polished and well spoken shitheadedry. Trump tore through them like paper exactly because they were politicians like any other, no matter how well they championed pretty much the same policies that Trump is for now.

Also, I'm liking these that are coming up.

Another reason I'm confident...Trump has been stuck at a ceiling of around 40-44% in national polls. He's not close to 50%, he's basically holding his base of white (mainly male) voters and that's literally it. Absolutely nothing he said or did tonight appealed to any group that could get him to 50%. I'm gonna just guess his performance turned women off, he continued to paint the entire black community like they live in Robocop era Detroit, he continued his attacks on immigration, etc.

The math simply does not work for him. If this was a legitimate three or four person race you could argue he was fine, but it's not. Johnson and Stein will follow the path of past 3rd party candidates and significantly under preform on Election Day.

watched some "highlights" if you can call them that... wow, shit really went off the rails there huh? dude was just babbling at the end. the constant interruptions just made him look weak and inexperienced. dude is obviously not cut out to run with the big dogs in debate. was reading somewhere else, good point brought up: trump thus far has been shielded from having to expand much on policy due to sharing a stage with other jokers who, despite their failures, can mostly expand on their policy. all trump has to do in those situations is just toss barbs and counters. up there all by himself? lul.

She probably won't convince many people to swing completely from right to left but I think a lot more people are going to walk away believing that Trump is not an option.

They are. It's how a lot of voters in Britain voted against the EU: "THEY TOOK OUR JOBS, THEY RAPE OUR WIMMINS, THEY ARE EVIL!"  I mean, it's known the recession recovery in rust-belt and other rural areas hasn't "bounced back" as well as economists want to say it has. So Trump's stump-speech of "make America great again!" resonates with them because their industries are gone and nothing came to replace them. They're hoping with him in office those industries come back.

Like I said, those voters are already pretty decided through thick or thin (though I haven't seen any of the Trump supports on my Facebook feed crowing for him this morning. :doge ) with him because they feel he's the answer to this problem more than raising their voices and getting that change to happen.

It's really the undecideds that are left (just look at CNN's feature on some  :doge) that are the toss-up.

Exactly. But we'll see. I don't underestimate the underclass that had their jobs outsourced/moved.

Trump brought up Clinton's remarks about Alicia Machado, a former Miss Universe winner who Trump encouraged to lose weight after she won the crown in the 1990s, when he was asked if Clinton got under his skin. Trump said that Machado was the "absolute worst."

"She was the worst we ever had. The worst, the absolute worst. She was impossible, and she was a Miss Universe contestant and ultimately a winner who they had a tremendously difficult time with as Miss Universe," he said on "Fox and Friends."

"She was the winner, and, you know, she gained a massive amount of weight, and it was a real problem. We had a real problem. Not only that, her attitude, and we had a real problem with her," Trump continued. "So Hillary went back into the years and she found this girl. This was many years ago, and found the girl and talked about her like she was Mother Teresa, and it wasn't quite that way, but that's okay. Hillary has to do what she has to do. I see what's happening in the polls."

Come get your boy, white middle-aged Americans.
