Civic maybe? Think that's what my wife has and it's been around since before we started dating (so more than 10 years).

to deal with snow.

Where do you live? AWD isn't really necessary for driving in the snow. A good set of snow tires makes much more of a difference. Also finding a small car with AWD might be kind of difficult.

buffalo. the roads are very poor in the winter and most people around here would opt for awd if given the option. it's not a deal breaker but i need something that would be good in the winter.

Are there AWD variants of the Prius? I'm sure you could pick up a second hand one fairly cheep.

Not yet, but Toyota announced one back in November. 2015 model should be AWD.

That's my first choice for my next car too.  My criteria are about the same as yours, except the new driver thing.  They're known as rally cars though...

So you won't buy a domestic but you will buy one of the lowest quality, most expensive, highest repair cost vehicles in the compact segment?

The Cruze/Focus/Elantra stomp that in every way that will matter to you. I'm sure the Dart does too but it hasn't been out long enough to say quality for sure.

Get the Elantra. It was the best small car two years ago (according to Consumer Reports) and the second best last year. Costs range in the 17-21k. It gets close to 30mpg.

Everything has a 5 year warranty and the powertrain has a 10 year warranty.

Suburu has something called the Impreza which is equally highly rated and comes in AWD, yet still gets good gas mileage. I think it's a little ugly, but everyone has different tastes.

When I lived up there, I had a 97 Accord and that seemed to do decently in the snow... But yeah I'd second the Subaru recommendations for that kinda weather. I have a 2005 TL (looking to purchase something next year, but definitely "scaling back") and I love it but it's horrible in the snow (as I found out last weekend).

and as for "not American" - it doesn't even matter anymore. Lots of Japanese/Euro car companies do a good deal of manufacturing in the states. Though I felt like I was the only one who lived in Buffalo who owned a Japanese-branded car :P

Being a frequent renter of vehicles (for work) I can vouch for the Elantra and Cruze - good features, easy to drive, good power and well-tuned.  The 2013 Focuses (Foci?) never impressed me much.  And, an earlier edition of the Focus did not do so splendidly in Manitoba in January (where I was at the time).

I've also driven the Jetta, which is OK in the snow.

I'm no aficionado, but my impression was that the heavier my car was, the easier it handled the snow, all other things being equal.

Noooo.  Don't do it, CG.  Worst car I've ever owned by far.  The interior falls apart by looking at it.  I'm missing door handles, the radio volume knob, buttons.  The plastic cover around the shifter is gone.  It's horrible.  It constantly overheats.  I have replaced the entire cooling system.  It will just break again months later.  It's a huge POS.

I owned a 2000 Focus for some years (big ol problem car, but that model year was known for that), owned a 2008 focus for some years and that was really a fantastic car. Nothing really illustrates the difference between ford before 2008 and after like owning a 2000 and 2008 focus. Ford knows what's up these days. My 2012 Mustang GT is WAYYYYYYYY fun and I love the thing, but goddamn if the new Fusion doesn't turn my head.

I just recently got a 2002 Toyota Corolla that's nice. Insurance is cheaper since it's considered a family car as well. Previously I had a 1992 Acura Integra which was a 2-door car and having 4-doors is a whole lot better to me. ROOM FOR ALL THE NON-EXISTENT PEOPLE I TAKE WITH ME!

Cruze/Elantra/Mazda3/Focus are the class leaders

After driving home in 5" of ice, sleet and snow, learn how to drive a stick and get a WRX. Our's held up against the big SUVs and trucks today. And the accident we were in last year busted our headlight but destroyed the front end of the idiot who hit us.

Highways shut down all over the place, morons abandoning their cars in the middle of major roads and highways, complete sleetpocalypse.

The highway to our house was a Mustang graveyard. MUSTANG GRAVEYARD. Five FIVE just sitting in the middle of the highway in a five mile stretch. RIP :usacry

I drove my Mustang GT vert in the big snow storms we had in 09/10 winter. I've driven my 300C RWD since then, every storm, any day.

I drove my old Monte Carlo in similar conditions years ago but I wouldn't subject my new one to it.
