Mario 64 revolutionized 3D game design. Even if a lot of the stars weren't all that well designed/lazy as fuck.

The depth of Mario's movements in 64 is still not matched by most games to this day.

I was a big Mario fan as a kid. I couldn't believe they went from Yoshi's Island and Super Mario World to...doing the same level over and over just to get to Bowser. I was impressed by the graphics and movement in Mario 64, and little else. How anyone couldn't see Mario 64 as a downgrade, I never understood. I piss on Mario 64.

I played it again on ds and two-thirds of it is still boring. Thankfully the last third is pretty solid. Maybe I should give it another go since 3ds has the sense to include an analog stick.

As for F-Zero/Wipeout, I never liked F-Zero SNES. Something about that 2d scrolling racing felt like crap to me. We played a shit load of F-Zero in summer vacation in 1995 at my cousin's place in LA, and I fucking hated that game. By that point, I was spoiled by Daytona and Outrun. I never played F-zero X, but I'd rather play Wipeout XL over F-Zero GX.

The joys of Mario 64 were that the levels were huge and varied on their own. You don't just repeat the levels, you follow different paths and challenge yourself in different ways.

Symphony of the Night is definitely better than Super Metroid though.

The paths are almost always the same though. You are pretty much always going the same path most of the time you play a level. This increases repetition. In my 11 year old mind that equates to "doing the same thing over and over." I was more impressed by Nights.

It's for this reason, I preferred Sunshine over 64. Sunshine didn't have you going to the same areas over and over. Each new episode of a level would send you to a totally different part of the stage, with a completely different goal. Not to mention the warp stages.

I've been clinically diagnosed nintarded since birth, and being European I of course downloaded Earthbound on VC for Wii U - but I haven't really been able to get into it. Mechanically it seems like one of those games you had to be there at the time for to appreciate. The music n' such sounds cool, and I like the humour / levity, but the battles are a bit too NES Dragon Quest for me. Also, I'm 30 now and therefore 20-30% dead, best case scenario... so I hate RPGs for all the time they steal. I have no idea what I was thinking really.
