There's a lot of racist attitudes towards products coming from Japan these days. I don't know what else to call someone judging avatars in that way, except saying that they're anti-Japanese culture.

It's not just NeoGAF. It's tons of sites on the internet, and it's a common thing for people to judge people in that way, and to put down anything from Japan.

Oh, I completely agree with that. It IS absolutely revolting, and such a reaction is absolutely warranted.

But that's part of what makes it beautiful! The human condition is sometimes so awful that it haunts our deepest, darkest nightmares... and if something is so terrible as to make you lose sleep, lose faith in humanity or even just want to vomit, that's kind of beautiful in its own way.

If something affects us on a deep, emotional level -- be it positive or negative, delightful or uncomfortable -- is that not an indication of its power as a work of art? And isn't that ability for a mere CONCEPT to make us sad, or mad, or miserable kind of amazing, when you think about it?

That's what I love about art.

I've written about this before. 6 years of Brian Ashcraft articles on Kotaku about weird shit from Japan, and I'd argue a giant portion of gamers who frequent gaming sites now hold significantly racist attitudes about Japanese culture, and anyone who likes it based on this extremely misguided, simplistic, ignorant idea of what it's like.
