Had this argument on Facebook recently after a guy I know went on a rant about welfare queens making his taxes so high and how he was "soooo glad" that he worked so they didn't have to. Leaned in on him pretty hard about Reagan tax cuts, lack of jobs, Ceo:employee wage disparity, etc. He got flustered and said "fine whatever youre right I'm wrong, happy?" I kinda was.

Divide and rule, they've gotten so good at it they have a vast section of the populace chomping at the bit and feeling envious of broken families, cripples, the mentally ill, and people who wouldn't have a pot to piss in otherwise without state assistance. A veritable army of sepoys that'd run the pogroms free of charge if given half the chance.

Heaven forbid you take away their pensions, social security, working and child tax credit though. (Which is the inevitable conclusion to all this.)

Here in Germany they're pushing private insurance, because social security doesn't cut it any more. Demographics, yadda yadda. Never mind the fact that many people simply don't earn enough to pay in a significant enough amount, or the fact that you can excuse yourself out of the system if you earn above a certain amount.
And the middle class largely applaud this shit and turn against the poor and suck up to the rich, even though they're actually the one's left to foot the bill. The poor don't pay in enough, the rich don't pay in at all. It's all rather frustrating.

The best thing or rather worst thing about Derrick is he would spend months absolutely exhaustively shitting on a game in every thread and then still get it on launch day.

For those who didn't come across him on Gaf, He basically saw no positivity in any new game. Good riddance to him.

It's Roman Polanski all over again.  Since a lot of gaffers like to live within neat white and black boxes where their opinions are defined, these types of conundrums appear.  They like Woody Allen, they don't like kid diddling, so they're stuck.  It's possible to like his movies and think of him as a pederast but that means gray spaces and gray spaces are triggering in their asspie minds.  So they go the wrong direction and choose to downplay what he did.  Also gaffers don't want to be known as wrong, ever.  They'll fight to the death to make sure that they are vindicated in the end.  Fucking losers.

Edit: Also like Polanski, there are gaffers who feel that you're allowed to get away with certain things because of what you've done.  If you made a couple of good movies, you should get a pass on sodomizing a 13 year old.  Woody Allen has made enough good movies (and bad movies) in their minds to excuse kid diddling.

It seems to me there's a difference in that Roman Polanski, unlike Woody Allen, isn't really in his movies. He's only the puppetmaster, and since I already assume everything I encounter in the world, including and especially things I enjoy, is probably guided behind the scenes by a deeply malevolent intelligence of some sort, it's hard for any particular crimes committed by the god of any particular experience to shock me too much.

i enjoyed my time with dishonored, but i find the "well you can just rambo of duty your way through the level, sure, but if you fulfil (arbitrary task condition) we'll give you a special ending!" a pretty onerous band-aid to add nuance to your game's design.

that said, my bigger concern was that everyone in a fantastical re-imagining of victorian london spoke with an american accent.

Dishonored's main problem for me was the fact that the challenge started diminishing the more powers you unlock. I wish the developers actually designed levels to account for that. First level was still the most fun and I was ready to call it my GOTY right then.

They did a really good job of accounting for all the additional mobility options you could get. I don't know how easy the offensive options can make it because I've never played it that way, but I went through with a max-mobility build and a spartan build that didn't buy anything supernatural in adition to stage one Blink, which you can't not get. It felt very lock and key doing either.

The high vs low chaos is pretty shallow though. And it's set up badly, because telling players that there'll be more roaming weepers and rats if you kill a lot suggests that this is the 'wrong' way to play. Rather self-defeating, considering they expressly wanted the combat to be viable.

The most meaningful consequence comes right at the end, as usual.

In high chaos, Samuel (the boatman) will set off the alarm as he drops you off at the last level, because you're nothing but a killer to him. The big bad(s) will hence know you're coming and threaten to kill Emily (?). You save her in the last moment and that's that. The ending then has her turning into a tyrant, mirroring your ruthlessness. It's implied that she's Corvo's daughter. In low chaos, Samuel is "honored to have worked with you", and the big bads turn on each other, with the last one staring into a fireplace and muttering insanely to himself. Emily is locked in a nearby room and the game ends if you free her. That ending is of course much nicer. Emily becomes a benevolent empress, Corvo always protects her, yadda yadda. And it even suggests that the scientists found a cure for the plague.
