Point-to-point linear was fine with what it was doing. Yes, Adam and the story is a problem. But the gameplay and being hunted by SA-X? Decent.

I wouldn't rank it up there highly, but it's far from :trash that ya'll rank it to be.

Zero Mission/the Metroid remake was the better GBA outing, yes. But that doesn't mean Fusion was terrible.

Fusion is the game that retroactively suffers most from Other M existing, since they share some of the same issues regarding narrative/structure. But even disregarding that*, the couple of (admittedly cool) scenes with SA-X doesn't manage to carry the entire game. Perfunctory stuff.

Okay, if my opinion is so bad, name more than three great Metroid games that aren't Super, Zero Mission, and Prime. Everything else is alright to blech.

I can see why you guys feel that way about Metroid. But that's how I feel about Zelda. I like every Zelda I've played aside from 2. :yeshrug

Really? I'd say in terms of numbers, Zelda has far more innoative titles over time, than Metroid has. Metroid tends to recycle the same moves and weapons in very, very similar locations. Zelda at least switches it up on a more consistent basis. If any Nintendo franchise is "un-innovative" it's got to be Metroid, and I like Metroid.

The ramifications of Pokemon's popularity at play.

Pokemon is the only Nintendo franchise I deeply care about at this point. Marios get 30 hours, Zeldas get 60 hours, Pokemans get 300+ hours.

Pokemon's also the most consistent Nintendo series to boot. So good. :aah Probably the only game I could play forever (maybe MH, too.)

There's ten total Metroid games over almost 30 years. One's a remake, one's a 1991 GameBoy game, two are direct sequels within four years, and one's an elevated fan fiction.

Sure, and compare Super to Metroid 1 and Prime to Metroid 1. Super has a better UI and a map, and it's a bit more bombastic, but for the most part they're structurally similar. There's ten games, but they're also so damn similar. Compare Zelda 1 to LTTP, or Zelda 1 to Majora's Mask, compare Zelda 1 to Twilight Princess or Wind Waker. These games play so differently despite their similarities. Ten Metroid's over 30 years and they're still so similar actually makes it worse.

Most consistently the same game, maybe.

Don't care. What they add every game is more than enough to keep me coming back.

Paying attention to how GF have evolved the competitive-friendly part of the series, from Sapphire through Pearl, White, and Y makes me incredibly excited about the future of the series. Can't say that about Mario, Zelda, or Metroid.

On the other side of the JRPG fence you have Dragon Quest MMO and Final Fantasy 13. I'm confident in my preference of Pokemon's method of iteration.

What Prime has over Ocarina is that it came out a whole gen later, with all the refinements that provides. At the very least I can say Retro nailed the polish and graphical aspect of Prime, and for what used to be a trash developer pre-Prime, that's really quite a remarkable achievement.

Prime didn't exist before he got involved:
Quote
"And all of a sudden, Mr. Miyamoto said, 'How about Metroid?' So that was Mr. Miyamoto's idea to have Retro focus solely on Metroid. As I remember, one of the four titles that I mentioned was a first-person shooter project and Mr. Miyamoto thought we could use the game engine from that."
And Valve essentially scrapped Half-Life and started over with just a level that had all the various gameplay elements in it because that development was such a mess. (And even after that it was.)

You know what I meant. Miyamoto may have given them the idea but he wasn't happy with how they were making it (or any of their other games), so he stepped in to help with design and they cancelled all their other titles.

But anyways you're trying to debate a point I don't really care about. Take the W.

I'm just questioning the common notion that Retro's problem was their lacking the "Nintendo Magic" which Miyamoto provided from his bag and made them inherently great instead of the blatantly horrific mismanagement of the company as personified by Spangenberg himself.

I'll give myself half a point in my spreadsheet on the "Andrex" row though.

Yeah, but by canning extraneous projects and focusing them on a single one while pushing out the caustic management figures. Which is less Miyamoto/Nintendo Magic than pretty standard MBA type stuff.

In a way, Retro's business plan worked as intended. Make a bunch of shoddy prototypes, get one picked up and get bought out. A classic Metroid game being made is kinda an accident of history and circumstance.

I still remember that Dynasty Warriors demo.

I've seen people refer to Samus as "Metroid" in Nintendo threads on GAF lately, so I'm not sure why these last few pages surprised me.
To be fair, they could be joking. The screenshot of that guy on the Miiverse asking why "Metroid can't crouch" or something made the rounds.

late, but:

Prime > Super Metroid > Prime 3 > Zero Mission > Fusion > Prime 2 > Other M > Metroid II > Metroid > Hunters

And for no good fucking reason:

ZELDA:

MM > Oracle games > OoT > Link Between Worlds > LA > Twilight Princess > Skyward Sword > FSA > Minish Cap > Wind Waker > ST > Zelda 1 > PH > Zelda 2

MARIO:

SMW > Galaxy 2 > Galaxy 1 > SMB3 > Mario 64 > Yoshi's Island > SMB3DW > SMB2 > Sunshine > NSMBW > SMB3DL > NSMBU > NSMB > SMB

Donkey Kong:

DKCR > DKC2 > DK64 > DKC > DKC3
