I was  going to make this thread   :pacspit

Can't wait. S1 and S2 were flawed in many ways, and S2 especially featured some shitty additions imo. But it's hard for me to see how they can fuck up ASOS...

This season will cover about half of the third book. S4 will be the other half plus some of the next books

Yup, the first season is the first book, second season is the second, etc.

The third book is getting split into two seasons, as it's a) the longest in the series so far and b) there's a WHOLE LOT of crazy, important shit going on.

Can't believe how much they butchered Mance's introduction! one of my favorite scenes from the book, the last line had no impact whatsoever on the show.

I did enjoy the wilding kids pretty much screaming "five oh!"

The Mance scene was okay but Jon worked. Hopefully he's book Jon and not TV series Jon this season. Where are the mammoths? Too resource extensive? Main issue with the Mance scene is the lack of music. Was Mance even playing a harp?

From this episode alone it is becoming clear that this season will be the true test to see what they're made of. Only one scene per character on today's show aside from a few and many were missing. HBO really needs to double the amount of eps per season they have for this show.

Yeah I was about to comment on that, the fact that these slaves are forced to kill the only thing that they care about and the only thing that has ever show them any love was for me the most brutal part of their "trainning" and I can't believe they just fucking ignored that.

Nope, terrible scene, this mance has shown no charisma so far (talking about the writing not the actor) and the Giantsbane didn't even get a chuckle out of me and he is the funniest character in the book, most of the writing and the performances on this show are emotionless and humorless.

Yes, Mance Rayder going from a charismatic wanderer who manages to lead thousands to his side turning into Generic Wilding Leader A sure is a small change!

So much speculation on who mance is and when the show finally meets him it does so with a whimper. Really makes me wonder what they'll do with the more dramatic revelations this season. Mance's reveal should be huge. It wasn't.

Mance's casting, sure.  Him not playing music is nitpicking.  Crying over lack of unullied puppy killing is nitpicking; mentioning the baby killing is enough to get the point across that these are SERIOUS DUDES.

If they put in every little fucking thing you guys want, every episode would focus on two characters, every season would be 30 episodes long, and Martin (provided he doesn't die, haha) would actually finish the books before the series.

In other words, again, you guys would make shitty adapters of the books.

The difference between me and you guys is that I understand there's reasons for the changes and don't act like someone knocked over my personal magazine rack or whatever.

Basically, I'm saying you guys are distinguished mentally-challenged.

Pretty good episode, much better than last season's premier. Well directed, everything looked nice  - I just hope that carries through the rest of the episodes. I was bummed to learn Alan Taylor, who has directed some of the best episodes (Baelor, Fire and Blood) wasn't returning this year, but the director list looks good. Michelle MacLaren has an episode this season, which will rock I'm sure.

The show is usually best when it spends some time with the storylines instead of becoming a glorified clip show, and I think this episode succeeded in that sense. While I didn't like Mance's introduction or the Robb/Harenhel stuff, just about all the other scenes/stories were nice. I really liked Davos' scenes, especially the one with Saan. And of course Tyrion's scene with Tywin was great; I look forward to more Charles Dance.

PUPPY-GATE: Who fucking cares. Forcing children to kill infants gets the point across.

Mance: I'll wait to see how it plays out for the rest of the season. It's way too early to declare him a disaster. Same with Giantsbane. I'm sure he'll be fine.

Ros: Wasn't annoying for once.

Dany's scenes were much better than last season's, despite the introduction of another exotic culture/city; there's always a danger of being too cheesy/SyFy channel-esque when it comes to that in fantasy or sci fi shows. I'm curious to hear what non-book readers thought of the final scene. I kind of wish they cast a younger actor, even though that guy is a very good actor. Still, I wonder if the impact would be bigger if it was a guy in his mid 50s instead of his 60s.

Forgot to say that I didn't like the fact that we skipped over the entire existence of "Arstan Whitebeard" and went straight to Barristan Selmy serving in her Queensguard.  But again, that's a minor quibble although it will make future decisions... interesting.

This episode was all about exposition and setting up future action and it was fine for that.  Like everybody said, the major stand out part was the Tyrion/Tywin scene, but I don't think anyone is surprised that Peter Dinklage can act at this point.  Their chemistry was awesome though and will make future interactions sweet.  :rock

I have to wonder how hard that scene was for Dinklage to act.  It's basically a scene where not only his character is called a monster, but also himself by extension.  Probably why that scene was so damned good.

And I thought Missandei was really young in the books?  Oh well, her T & A scenes are going to be  :mouf

Perhaps Rayder will mention the feast later and it will jog Jon's memory. Of course depending on how that's handled it could seem cheesy on screen. Like "oh btw we've met before" and Jon is like "ohhh yea, sheeit."

People keep talking about Dinklage but the other Lannister actors brought out as much intensity that made scenes feel real. I think that the Tywin scene is powerful than in the books. The script is lifted right off of it and yet SEEING it makes all the difference. I truly despise Twin than I ever did in the books now.
