Yea for someone who watches so much TV, Larry seems very...off on basic details. I can understand why my parents forget names/details from the show, and in general I think most non-viewers are confused about something or another. But good lord he's dumb at times.

Earlier this season, when the slave owner was showing off his Unsullied by cutting the nipple off of one of them, Larry complained that they showed it instead of just telling it. Right then, I knew that he didn't understand the basics of storytelling.

one thing that bothers me about the last ep is why Rob Stark wasn't able to put the old guy down and keep his cover when he was willing and able to slaughter his fellow crow to get into the wildlings...I mean the old man was basically guiding him through it and he still wasn't able to do it, even though he had already bonded with some wildlings and had way more reasons to not blow his cover at this point.

I re-read the book passage. :bow

Quote
Catelyn grabbed a handful of Jinglebell Frey’s long grey hair and dragged him out of his hiding place. “Lord Walder!” she shouted. “LORD WALDER!” The drum beat slow and sonorous, doom boom doom. “Enough,” said Catelyn. “Enough, I say. You have repaid betrayal with betrayal, let it end.” When she pressed her dagger to Jinglebell’s throat, the memory of Bran’s sickroom came back to her, with the feel of steel at her own throat. The drum went boom doom boom doom boom doom. “Please,” she said. “He is my son. My first son, and my last. Let him go. Let him go and I swear we will forget this . . . forget all you’ve done here. I swear it by the old gods and new, we . . . we will take no vengeance . . .”

Lord Walder peered at her in mistrust. “Only a fool would believe such blather. D’you take me for a fool, my lady?”
“I take you for a father. Keep me for a hostage, Edmure as well if you haven’t killed him. But let Robb go.”
“No.” Robb’s voice was whisper faint. “Mother, no . . .”
“Yes. Robb, get up. Get up and walk out, please, please. Save yourself . . . if not for me, for Jeyne.”
“Jeyne?” Robb grabbed the edge of the table and forced himself to stand. “Mother,” he said, “Grey Wind . . .”
“Go to him. Now. Robb, walk out of here.”
Lord Walder snorted. “And why would I let him do that?”

She pressed the blade deeper into Jinglebell’s throat. The lackwit rolled his eyes at her in mute appeal. A foul stench assailed her nose, but she paid it no more mind than she did the sullen ceaseless pounding of that drum, boom doom boom doom boom doom. Ser Ryman and Black Walder were circling round her back, but Catelyn did not care. They could do as they wished with her; imprison her, rape her, kill her, it made no matter. She had lived too long, and Ned was waiting. It was Robb she feared for. “On my honor as a Tully,” she told Lord Walder, “on my honor as a Stark, I will trade your boy’s life for Robb’s. A son for a son.” Her hand shook so badly she was ringing Jinglebell’s head.

Boom, the drum sounded, boom doom boom doom. The old man’s lips went in and out. The knife trembled in Catelyn’s hand, slippery with sweat. “A son for a son, heh,” he repeated. “But that’s a grandson . . . and he never was much use.”

A man in dark armor and a pale pink cloak spotted with blood stepped up to Robb. “Jaime Lannister sends his regards.” He thrust his longsword through her son’s heart, and twisted.
Robb had broken his word, but Catelyn kept hers. She tugged hard on Aegon’s hair and sawed at his neck until the blade grated on bone. Blood ran hot over her fingers. His little bells were ringing, ringing, ringing, and the drum went boom doom boom.

Finally someone took the knife away from her. The tears burned like vinegar as they ran down her cheeks. Ten fierce ravens were raking her face with sharp talons and tearing off strips of flesh, leaving deep furrows that ran red with blood. She could taste it on her lips.

It hurts so much, she thought. Our children, Ned, all our sweet babes. Rickon, Bran, Arya, Sansa, Robb . . . Robb . . . please, Ned, please, make it stop, make it stop hurting . . . The white tears and the red ones ran together until her face was torn and tattered, the face that Ned had loved. Catelyn Stark raised her hands and watched the blood run down her long fingers, over her wrists, beneath the sleeves of her gown. Slow red worms crawled along her arms and under her clothes. It tickles. That made her laugh until she screamed. “Mad,” someone said, “she’s lost her wits,” and someone else said, “Make an end,” and a hand grabbed her scalp just as she’d done with Jinglebell, and she thought, No, don’t, don’t cut my hair, Ned loves my hair. Then the steel was at her throat, and its bite was red and cold.

:bow :bow :bow
Still the best version of the Red Wedding. Cat's insanity >>>>> the TV scream.

Because jon snow is honorable and keeps to his ties, never balks, and only stuck with the wildlings for information/survival. The old man is dead anyways, but he's not going to be the one to do it. It isn't in Jon's character. One big problem with Jon's arc this entire season coming from the bores biggest Jon fan:

1. No internal monologue. You already know what he's thinking in the books.

2. They didn't go all the way with the halfhand. In the book Half hand and Jon devise a plan while on the run from Orell's crazed eagle after Jon slayed him in human form. They decide they're fucked. So Halfhand specifically tells Jon to follow them, act like one of them, never balk, and get all information on their numbers, goals, etc. These words are in every single Jon passage with the wildlings. They never did such a thing last season because they're idiots who wanted to make dumb virginity jokes instead of key plot information.

The problem is, they rid Jon of Ghost for SOME REASON when Ghost was a perfect outlet to bounce off THE BEST STARK'S INTERNAL MONOLOGUE. Instead they butchered it.

Uhh you think they should have spent more money to have the wolf on screen so Jon could talk to it...?

Drew: He killed that crow (Halfhand) in order to convince the wildlings that he was on their side. It was the Halfhand's idea for Jon to infiltrate the wildlings

How much does the wolf cost?

It is following Sam right? I don't see why it can't stick with Jon but that's probably because they had to go to Iceland.

The wolves are hard to control and the CGI/camera tricks are expensive. That's why they've barely been on screen this season. They rightly decided to focus the CGI budget on the dragons.

Ratings continue to climb:
Quote
The ratings for “The Rains of Castamere” are in and it is good news. Despite the week off, the viewer numbers grew from the last episode, coming in at 5.22 million viewers for the 9 PM airing. Another 1.08 million watched the 11 PM encore for a total of 6.3 million on the night.
http://winteriscoming.net/2013/06/ratings-remain-strong-heading-into-season-finale/

That includes a 2.8 share among the 18-49 demo, the highest of the night again. Very impressive. The finale's ratings should go through the roof.

without getting into spoilers, would I be able to pick up book 3 after this season ends and continue along, or have there been significant changes and abandoned subplots for the TV adaptation that I should just start at the beginning?

I'd say you'd be able to more or less, but there are going to be things that baffle you going forward that are introduced in the first two books.  If you don't mind having a wiki handy, I'd say go for it.

If you want to read book 3, you should start from the beginning of the book just to be safe. Starting in the middle would probably spoil you to various things that have been delayed, and ultimately be confusing.

Personally I always advise people to start with the first book, but starting at ASOS is fine. Just know you won't recognize a lot of characters and sub plots.

yeah, I was planning on starting book 3 from the beginning.  I'll give reading through 1 and 2 a go, since the version I'll pick up includes them anyway, but the events of Season 2 weren't all that exciting and I'm not eager to revisit it in the text.

i know that, but by not killing the old guy on horseback in the last ep Halfhand's death was in vain, you'd think if he was willing to kill his brother in arms he'd be able to put down another old man he doesn't even know who had already accepted his fate, especially after he'd fallen in love with a wildling and almost dying climbing a 700 fuckin foot wall with them...

The second book is a lot better than what they did in S2, trust me. If you skip it I'd at least suggest you read Dany's House Of The Undying chapter and the Blackwater battle. Just so you can see how the largest events differed from the show.

And a note (This spoiler is safe but I'll hide it regardless, since it's book info. You can highlight it without worries):
spoiler (click to show/hide)
when you start the third book Dany will have someone in her group of advisers named Arstan Whitebeard. He's Barriston Selmy incognito. The show revealed him outright instead of including that plot; you'll learn why he hid himself later in the book.

True but ultimately his job was to find out what the wildlings were doing, how many were coming, and to warn the Watch. He completed those goals, and had to escape in order to warn the Wall that wildlings were going to attack from the south before attacking from the north)

I think the main takeaway from that episode was that the Starks are shit at this.  For instance Dany is about as old as Robb.  She has buried a husband, lost an army, watched her husband kill her brother without a single fuck given, wandered the desert, raised a new army, and become the Abe Lincoln of the East.  Robb just got his mother, wife, and himself killed because he married a nurse.  And this is the dude to rule Westeros?  I mean the best Stark is a little girl.  Bran is cool, he can control wolves and Blind Side Monsters and what not, but christ has his story been dull.  Ned got tricked by a whorehouse owner named Littlefinger, and Cat started a war because she arrested the wrong guy.  Sansa, the less said the better, Rickon is like six, and Jon Snow is a bastard who betrayed the crows, and then betrayed the people he betrayed the crows to like 6 episodes later.  Come on.

Now the Lannisters, despite being twincestuous, are a bunch of badasses.  Cersei the queen regent, the kingslayer and Peter Dinklage?  Tywin's a proud father.

Now if I need an alibi for court, I'd choose a Stark, but ruling Westeros?  Lannisters or Targaryen all the way.  Maybe the Tyrells, they seem to have their shit together.

Also fuck anyone saying Robb was their favorite.  Seriously the dude is somewhere between Theon and Hodor on the interesting character scale.

In S1 the Lord Commander mentioned that if they hung every brother who left the Wall to bang a prostitute for the night, the Wall would be empty.

In a sense, Jon had to break his vows in order to keep them.

Military genius, but a total dumbass in all else.
"Hey mom I'm sending our ward/prisoner Theon back to his father"
"I love this nurse, gonna throw the Freys in the bushes for her"

I realize he married her for a different reason in the book but ultimately it was still a poorly thought out decision in both cases.

 :lol

Yeah it's kind of nuts in the book when you realize they're all actual children.  Makes Dany that much more a boss though.

Honestly, Tywin worship weirds me out. Guy is a tyrant.
It's Game of Thrones man, not the Babysitter's Club.

Also Charles Dance.  Man the Lannister's really lucked out in the casting department.

Ehhhh, the Stark's never wanted to seat the throne of Westeros. They just wanted to be independent, hence "King in the North".
