Watch OZ in the meantime.

Popfact: the actor Winston Kodogo appeared in both OZ and Lost. Both roles negatively reinforce the usual role of the the strong negro. In OZ: Nigerian, homosexual, rapist, Islam, drugs, violence. In Lost: Somalian, damaged war-child/religious maniac.

The Red Viper has been cast.

Quote
The most anticipated new role coming to the fourth season of Game of Thrones has been filled.

Prince Oberyn Martell will be played by Chilean actor Pedro Pascal, who has previously had arcs on CBS’ The Good Wife, ABC’s Red Widow and USA’s Graceland.

For those who haven’t read the books, here’s a spoiler-free description of the character:
spoiler (click to show/hide)
Oberyn is a brash, charming, cunning prince of Dorne (part of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros). His sister Elia was brutally murdered by the Lannister knight Gregor “The Mountain” Clegane when Mad King Aerys was overthrown by Robert Baratheon and the Lannisters. In season four, Oberyn comes to King’s Landing with revenge on his mind.
[close]

Also: Nearly every Thrones character has a nickname and Oberyn has one of the coolest: The Red Viper.

“This was a tough one,” say showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss about the casting.
spoiler (click to show/hide)
“The Red Viper is sexy and charming, yet believably dangerous; intensely likable, yet driven by hate. The boys love him, the girls love him, and he loves them all back. Unless your last name is Lannister. We found a fellow who can handle the job description and make it seem effortless. He wasn’t easy to find and he won’t be easy to stop.”
[close]

HBO hasn’t yet announced its Comic-Con plans, but if you’re headed to San Diego, it’s safe to assume Thrones will have a presence this year. Game of Thrones returns in 2014.

Uh...

Two types of Dornish are described. The darker ones who live further out in the desert, and those closer to the shore who have fairer skin. He's a fairer skin, "salty" Dornishman.

Sandy Dornishmen live in the deserts and the long river valleys, faces burned brown by the hot Dornish sun, they are even darker than the salty Dornishmen.[4]

Stony Dornishmen live in the passes and heights of the Red Mountains. They have the most Andal and First Men blood and mostly resemble the other people of the Seven Kingdoms in look, customs and traditions. They are brown-haired or blond with faces that are freckled or burned by the sun.[4]

Where does it say in the books Oberyn is a salty?

I give the Dornish Spanish accents.

This pretty much confirms Dorne = Spain shortly after they kicked the Moors out.

And I have to agree with Himu, I've always imagined The Red Viper having my skin tone not a white Chilean.

The Dornish have Rhoynar blood from an Rhoynish invasion but with Andal (westerosi mainstream) culture. Rhoyne is from Essos continent so you're correct. Nymeria was the Rhoynish Queen who led said conquest and settled in Dorne.

I don't think the majority of Moors were black, if that's what you saying.   Some were, but most were Arab and Berber who I doubt I would say would be very different from many other Spaniards;  they all seem to have a golden Mediterranean tan.

I was expecting a more Mediterranean look to a Dornish dude, but I'll wait for makeup before being disappointed.

PD is right, y'all. "Sandy" Dornishmen are clearly meant to be the equivalent of Spaniards with arab characteristics, found most predominately in Southern Spain due to the muslim conquest (and the arabs/berbers of Spain weren't/aren't especially dark-skinned in the first place). "Stony" Dornishmen are the equivalent of Spaniards who are from the northeast and closest to France, the whitest of all. "Salty," what the Martells are, are inbetween.

And the actor they've cast fits this to a T.

I actually have worries as to whether the he will be able pull off the role (hasn't distinguished himself in any role and isn't British), but he certainly isn't wrong in the visual sense.

"I wasn't present for Pedro Pascal's audition, but I understand that he really killed it with his reading. And since his casting was announced, the producer of another TV show on which he appeared recently has written me to say how terrific Pascal is, and to congratulate us on the casting. So I suspect that he will turn out to be a wonderful Red Viper.

I do know that David and Dan and HBO do favor having a racially and ethnically diverse cast on the series. It is true that we've lost several black characters who appear in the novels (Chataya and Alayaya, Jalabhar Xho, Strong Belwas), but to balance that, characters like Salladhor Saan and Xaro Xhoan Daxos, both white in the books, have been played by black actors. Missandei as well, though in the books the Naathi are golden-skinned, not white.

As for the Dornishmen, well, though by and large I reject one to one analogies, I've always pictured the "salty Dornish" as being more Mediterranean than African in appearance; Greek, Spanish, Italian, Portugese, etc. Dark hair and eyes, olive skin. Pedro Pascal is Chilean. (Check out Amok's version of the Red Viper, that's how I saw him. Or Magali Villenueve's beautiful and sexy portrait of Princess Arianne).

When and if the show introduces Prince Oberyn's daughters, the Sand Snakes, I expect we will see the same diversity as in the books, ranging from Tyene (blond and blue-eyed) to Sarella (light brown skin, as her mother was a Summer Islander). And I expect that the crew of the CINNAMON WIND will all be cast with black actors..."

my question

asos spoiler
spoiler (click to show/hide)
This seems to mean they'll be delaying the Wall battle until episode 9, which is baffling. Assuming the initial skirmish/Ygritte's death occurs within the first four episodes, how the hell are they going to stretch things out for the remainder episodes until the ninth? Maybe some "preparing for battle" scenes, plus the initial arrow attack? That would work to highlight that the battle occurs over the course of many days I guess, but I still fear they'll place some boring filler in there.

If I had to guess a skeleton outline of the season...

EP1 - Red Viper introduction, Jon warning Wall of ambush, wedding prep, Mereen*
EP2 - Mereen champion vs...whoever replaces Strong Belwas. Hopefully Barriston, more likely Daario
EP3 - Ygritte's death?
EP4 - Purple Wedding, Sansa escape
EP5 - Tyrion trial prep, Mance arrives at Wall
EP6 - Tyrion's trial, arrow attack on Wall, Jorah betrayal revealed
EP7 - Jorah/Barriston/Grey Worm infiltrate Mereen sewers
EP8 - Red Viper v Mountain
EP9 - Battle on Wall, Stannis arrival
EP10 - Tywin's death, Lord Commander Snow, Queen Dany, Stoneheart

*I think the show will give Dany a reason to go to Mereen. Many viewers are under the assumption that she "won" and thus will be going to Westeros after that S3 ending. If she merely waltzes to Mereen to free slaves again, I think people will be disappointed. Perhaps the best way to handle this would be to have a Mereen assassin attempt to kill Dany in EP1, and in the process either kill one of her friends (Missandei?) or capture someone. It would be a change, but ASOS does feature an attempt on Dany's life (Mero, who was killed off in S3). That would give her a quite a revenge motive, and give the first episode a nice cliff hanger.

Not worried considering Marshall is directing.

Obviously the scope will be reduced like the Blackwater, due to it being impossible to film exactly what happens in the books on a TV budget. But it'll be awesome I'm sure, and with Marshall being confirmed so early he'll have time to plan for the shoot - unlike with the Blackwater ep, where he was literally a last minute hire after the previous director had to bail out.

I wonder if it'll be shown from multiple perspectives. Jon was on top of the Wall for most of the battle while Noye defended the gate; meanwhile Bowen Marsh defended the Bridge of Skulls and was injured. Not sure if Noye will be cast but I'm sure there will be some type of giant fight.

Characters like Pyp may be more prominent next season for that reason.

Quote
This Iron Throne is massive. Ugly. Assymetric. It's a throne made by blacksmiths hammering together half-melted, broken, twisted swords, wrenched from the hands of dead men or yielded up by defeated foes... a symbol of conquest... it has the steps I describe, and the height. From on top, the king dominates the throne room. And there are thousands of swords in it, not just a few. This Iron Throne is scary. And not at all a comfortable seat, just as Aegon intended.

Also: Neil Marshall confirmed for episode 9 of S4. Boom.
