When I first read GoT I imagined it looking like a larger version of this. But now nearly as large as that other picture. Shit is insanely awesome.

The giant throne would look kind of ridiculous in the show.  It would necessitate a lot of shouting and wide shots, which would be idiotic for a show with such a great cast.  Better they left it small.

definitely agreed. but god it looks badass

I think the show version is awesome. My only (minor) complaint is that it doesn't really look like someone could die on it.

You don't want to see this scene, Contra?

random whore: fuck meeee
*loud sex noises*
Grand Maester Prycelle: Next time, shave your cunt, young girl
random whore: you afraid my cunt will cut you, m'lord?
Grand Maester Prycelle: Men have died from less
random whore: I've always wanted to fuck on the Iron Throne
Grand Maester Prycelle: Summer child, have you heard what happened to Maegor Targaryen, the first of his name?
*oral sex begins*
random whore: no, m'lord
Grand Maester Prycelle: He was quite a brutal man, yet an effective king. Don't use your teeth, girl
random whore: sorry m'lord. No hands?
Grand Maester Prycelle: Indeed. What was I saying? Oh yes, Maegor. He protected the realm, yet executed many of his wives for failing to give him an heir. He also completed construction of the Red Keep, including the hidden secret passages throughout the castle
random whore: mayhaps we could fuck there, m'lord?
Grand Maester Prycelle: Maegor had the builders executed after its completion. No one knows where they are...
*Prycelle shouts in ecstasy as he reaches climax*
random whore, as she wipes cum from her mouth: what happened to King Maegor, m'lord?
Grand Maester Prycelle: One day while sitting on the Iron Throne he died of a grievous injury. Many say that one of the sharpest blades on the throne killed him.
random girl: Oh. Well mayhaps we could fuck in the Maidenvault?

Well, that's pretty easy. It's said that one must never rest while on the Iron Throne because its knives and daggers and steel will stab and cut you. Stabs and cuts from the Iron Throne are a sign of a bad king. All it'd take is one scene with Ned as Hand, sitting on the edge of the throne and someone like Littlefinger wondering why his butt is on guard while on the throne, and Ned would offer a little history to the making of the throne.

Later on, they could show Joffrey getting cut by the throne repeatedly to reinforce this.

Easy.

Indira Varma cast as Ellaria Sand
(Image removed from quote.)

More casting news, hot off the presses! James Hibberd of Entertainment Weekly has reported that Indira Varma will join the cast as Ellaria Sand in season 4 of Game of Thrones. Ellaria Sand is the paramour of Prince Oberyn Martell aka “The Red Viper”, who was also recently cast. She will accompany her lover when he arrives in King’s Landing this season.

Indira Varma should be familiar to fans of HBO’s Rome as she played Niobe, the wife of Kevin McKidd’s Lucius Vorenus. She is the third Rome veteran to join the cast, following in the footsteps of Ciarán Hinds and Tobias Menzies who were added last season. Like most of the cast, her acting roots are in theater but she has since moved into television. In addition to her starring turn on Rome, Varma has also appeared in Bones, Luther and Human Target.

Roger Ashton-Griffiths cast as Mace Tyrell

(Image removed from quote.)
George R. R. Martin doled out the clues and it didn’t take long for our readers to solve them. Martin has now confirmed our guess was correct: Roger Ashton-Griffiths has been cast as Mace Tyrell.

Mace Tyrell is the lord of Highgarden and head of House Tyrell. He is the son of Olenna Tyrell and father to Loras and Margaery. He is, in the words of his mother, a bit of an oaf.

Roger Ashton-Griffiths is a British character actor with a long and busy career. He appeared on the big screen in Gangs of New York, A Knight’s Tale and The Brothers Grimm. On television, he has had roles in Torchwood and The Tudors.

Awesome news. Wow, the cast in King's Landing continues be stellar.

I first saw him in NBC's The Odyssey miniseries. He's perfect for the role.

One thing I wonder about the Varma casting

Later book spoilers, including minor TWOW spoiler
spoiler (click to show/hide)
She's a pretty noteworthy actress and has had some good roles. Ellaria Sand isn't a particularly noteworthy character in the books though, which makes me curious about what the writers plan on doing with her; this wouldn't be the first time they "over cast" someone (see: Littlefinger) though.

I'm sure she'll have a (bisexual) sex scene with the Red Viper this season, and be looked down upon for being a  bastard, but what else is there for such a good actress? This makes me wonder whether the writers are replacing Arianne with Sand. IE Sand will leave King's Landing after Oberyn's death, and begin the plot to crown Myrcella; it would make sense, and give her a very personal reason for wanting revenge.

I like Arianne as a character but believe she is completely disposable. While her brother is a specific plot device (presumably to cause Dorne to turn its back on Dany), Arianne isn't that important. Especially if the writers find a way to make Ellaria Sand the heir to Prince Doran. Some might argue Arianne is necessary because she might marry "Aegon" who has just captured Storm's End; she's on her way to negotiate with him.

IMO it doesn't matter: "Aegon" is allegedly Doran's nephew, he'll have to support him regardless of whether he agrees to a marriage.

Time Warner: “Game of Thrones is the most pirated show in the world, That’s better than an Emmy”

During yesterday morning’s earnings call, Time Warner CEO Alan Bewkes was making the usual pitch for higher affiliate fees, greater appreciation of the company’s TV shows and films and…. piracy?

In response to a question from investors as to whether the company see’s the mass theft of the show Game of Thrones as a compliment, Bewkes said:

I have to admit it, I think you’re right. The much-discussed fantasy series is HBO’s most popular TV show, and if you go to people who are watching it without subs, it’s a tremendous word-of-mouth thing….

We’ve been dealing with this for 20, 30 years—people sharing subs, running wires down the backs of apartment buildings. Our experience is that it leads to more paying subs. I think you’re right that Game of Thrones is the most pirated show in the world and that’s better than an Emmy.

    -  Alan Bewkes

We have always known that HBO take a more “unusual” approach in terms of tackling piracy, but to have the exec. of Time Warner come out and say that having the most pirated show in the world is “better than an Emmy” is completely unheard of.

Game of Thrones’ audience continues to grow, eclipses 14 million viewers

HBO parent company Time Warner has released their latest quarterly earnings report and within it are the latest viewer numbers for Game of Thrones. HBO is now reporting that Game of Thrones averaged 14.2 million viewers per episode last season. This is a 20% increase over season 2′s viewership number and is a significant jump from the last reported number of 13.6 million. (You can download the full report here.)

What does this mean? It means that even well into season 3 Thrones‘ viewership is still climbing. Which is pretty unprecedented for a drama like this. I suspect the Red Wedding may have had something to do with the late season jump as people got caught up on the show to see what all the fuss is about.

This also means that Game of Thrones is very, very close to becoming HBO’s most-watched show of all-time. The Sopranos is currently tops with an average of 14.4 million viewers per episode. Game of Thrones may very well break that next season.

The first book. Trust me. The show jumps around and misses entire subplots and characters. They haven't even said who Lyanna's name and give zero backstory of the events of Robert's rebellion, or the history of locales. George RR Martin's world is full of more details than fucking Tolkien. Start with book 1.

IF you want to start with the third book, read it from the beginning. If you start ASOS in the middle you'll be completely lost. I tend to suggest folks start with Game Of Thrones, but some really really want to know what happens next...

Just realize you'll be slapped in the face with a lot of names you won't recognize. Robb's wife is a completely different character, for instance.

Don't ever think about starting with the third book. Start with the first, or, whatever, the second because of a huge change in Dany's storyline at the end of book 2.

Book 1 is still suggested to read despite season 1 being very close to it as it goes into the history of locales, the history of the world. Do tv watchers even remember who the fuck the children of the forest are? Exactly. That's why you read from book 1.
