Yup when it comes to the stuff of large scale I understand the changes. I still think Blackwater was done really well. I didn't expect massive scorpions and catapults on dromond ships; it's HBO but it's still television, and you'd need a 150m budget to replicate that battle.

With the House Of The Undying...eh. I guess the fear was that if they did it too blatantly it would "spoil" major events in S3 (and future seasons). Still, I wish the writers would trust the audience with prophesies and theories. Lost and other shows proved audiences can handle that information, and obsessive fans will spend time trying to figure stuff out.

Pretty sure the only prophesy/theory mentioned on the show is Azor Ahai, in S2 when Melisandre introduces Stannis.

HBO has confirmed to us that Icelandic strongman Hafþór “Thor” Björnsson has joined the cast of Game of Thrones for the show’s fourth season, and will be taking over the role of the Mountain, Ser Gregor Clegane.

Though the 6’9″-tall performer doesn’t have any professional acting experience, he has racked up an impressive list of accolades. At only 24 years old, Thor has won the title of “Iceland’s Strongest Man” for the last three years in a row, and placed third in the 2012 “World’s Strongest Man” competition. WiC sources are reporting that Thor was on set in Belfast earlier this August, and that he is currently in Dubrovnik with the rest of the cast, preparing to film scenes for season four.

Angolan actor Hoji Fortuna reportedly joins the cast
(Image removed from quote.)

IndieWire blog Shadow and Act is reporting that Angolan actor Hoji Fortuna has joined the cast of Game of Thrones. Unfortunately, the role is being kept under-wraps for now (shocker!).

Fortuna has worked mostly in African and Portuguese cinema up until now, although he did have one brief appearance on US TV in the short-lived series Pan-Am.

Fortuna has been teasing on his Twitter and Facebook that he will be heading to Croatia to film sometime soon. That narrows down his role to one in the King’s Landing or Daenerys storylines.

Mark Gatiss’s role revealed

After much speculation, the role Sherlock co-creator and co-star Mark Gatiss will be taking on for Game of Thrones is a mystery no more.

The actor’s casting on the HBO show was announced in July by Entertainment Weekly, but without a character name attached. After months of leaving fans wondering what part he’ll have in season 4, the character has been revealed. According to his CV, Gatiss will be playing the role of Tycho Nestoris.

Role explanation (spoilers)

spoiler (click to show/hide)
Nestoris is a representative of the Iron Bank of Braavos, legendary throughout the world of Game of Thrones for always getting back the money they lend. Those who fail to repay them will find the Iron Bank funding their enemies, Tyrion warns in season 3, and the Crown is in heavy debt to the Iron Bank.

In another exclusive by Entertainment Weekly’s James Hibberd it has been revealed that the indie band tradition continues this season as well. The producers have booked the Icelandic band Sigur Rós! They are shooting their appearance in Croatia at the moment.

Based on previous experience, it is safe to speculate that they might record a song for the show as well. Previously The National and The Hold Steady performed songs from the ASoIaF universe on the show (and featured on the original soundracks releases), while members of Coldplay and Snow Patrol appeared on screen as well.

Lady Waynwood cast

(Image removed from quote.)

More news from the Vale! According to her CV, Paola Dionisotti has joined the cast of Game of Thrones as Lady Anya Waynwood for the show’s fourth season.

The actress is best known for her work with the Royal Shakespeare Company, most recently in productions of King John and Richard III. On British television, Dionisotti played recurring roles on Harbour Lights and Forever Green, and guest-starred on programs such as Doctors, Midsomer Murders, and Poirot.

Lady Waynwood (spelled Waywood on the CV, likely a mistake) is (super minor spoilers)

the head of her house, and sworn to House Arryn of the Vale, much like Bronze Yohn Royce whose casting was revealed last week. Similar to Royce, she was not present in A Storm of Swords, but it appears that the lords and ladies of the Vale are making their collective presence known early.

In other casting news, Gabrielle Dempsey will be playing the part of an Innkeeper’s Daughter in the first episode of season four, according to her CV. A 2010 graduate of the Central School of Speech and Drama, this will be Dempsey’s first television role.
http://winteriscoming.net/2013/09/lady-waynwood-cast/

Sounds like they're moving a lot of AFFC material into this season which makes sense. It's easily the most...controversial novel in the series but I think it's a perfect fit for television. The show has never been pure action, and I think a lot of the dialogue and character moments in AFFC will translate very well.

On the Innkeeper's Daughter...(ASOS spoiler)

guessing they'll be re-introducing The Mountain to the audience, to put it lightly. Good idea to reinforce his character before the duel.

Three-Eyed Raven cast

It looks like a mysterious figure from beyond the Wall will be making an appearance on Game of Thrones in season 4. According to his agency resume, British actor Struan Rodger has been cast in the role of the Three-Eyed Raven.

The character (called the Three-Eyed Crow in the A Song of Ice and Fire novels) is connected to Bran Stark and his quest for understanding the visions that have come to the boy since he was pushed from the tower at Winterfell.

Rodger is a familiar face in British film and television, turning up in programs such as Chandler & Co., Rumpole of the Bailey, The Thick Of It, and Law and Order UK.  He memorably lent his voice to two episodes of Doctor Who as the Face of Boe. His film credit highlights include Kill List, Stardust, Young Adam, Chariots of Fire, Four Weddings and a Funeral, and The Madness of King George.

Octavia Alexandru’s role revealed
(Image removed from quote.)

Thanks to an update to the young actress’s modeling résumé, we now know what role Octavia Alexandru will be playing in the fourth season of Game of Thrones. Her casting was first discovered in July on her agency’s web page.

Alexandru’s role involves material from A Dance with Dragons, and is therefore considered serious SPOILER territory!

Spoiler:
spoiler (click to show/hide)
According to her résumé, Alexandru will be playing the Child of the Forest, as many had speculated when her casting was uncovered. The Children of the Forest are a legendary people of Westeros, strange creatures that appear childlike but are in fact quite old.

Ours is the Fury:  WinterIsComing had speculated that she might be Leaf from ADwD, and it seems like with her introduction this year, Alexandru’s Child might be an equivalent of that character. The timing is right, with the Three-Eyed Raven popping up next year as well. Alexandru’s extensive dance experience will lend itself well to creative body language for the forest creature.

BTW I have a feeling Bran just might be on the wrong side. Bloodraven never struck me as a "good" guy.

It's also due to him not having much of anything to do unless they moved material from book 5 into this season. He has the fewest chapters of any major character.

It really makes me wonder what they'll do in S5, if the next book isn't out yet. They'll be completely done with Bran's story by the end of S4, which will start in late March/early April 2014. Shooting for S5 will likely begin in July, which is when previous seasons began shooting. If TWOW is not out yet...? There's no way Bran simply won't appear in the season. I know Martin has already told the writers where the story is going, so they'll pretty much have an idea. But will Martin give them notes of Bran's upcoming story in TWOW?
[close]

Best case scenario: TWOW comes out in 2014. Martin has said it's possible, although he hasn't guaranteed or promised 2014. Interestingly, his schedule is completely blank from mid December to May 2014. I think he's going to attempt to finish the book in that time, and shoot for a summer or fall release.

I really do hope the book comes out next year. But the best we're probably gonna get is another chapter for the new year.

It's imperative for buddy to get the book released by 2015 though, unless he wants the show and book to only be vaguely connected - which may well happen anyway.

I'd imagine the show will be pretty different regardless. The books are going in a direction that will make it very hard to film, scope wise. There's a scene in ADWD that strikes me as completely unfilmable as described, at least on their budget

Another show problem: the complete absence of certain mysteries, conspiracies, and prophesies are going to make later revelations seem like they came out of nowhere which may turn off viewers. I think you guys know who I'm talking about, but there's also the issue of the big "twist" in ADWD and how viewers will deal with it given there hasn't been any set up.

Martin's age and weight make me really worried the series won't get finished. He better have some kind of out line for the series in his will.

My first thought was "GRRM is a long-time comic book fan, so he likely lives in a state of constant denial, and has made no plans for his early demise" -- then I realized that there is likely a LOT OF MONEY tied up in the series, and that Hollywood bigwigs likely have some clause in the contracts which either forces GRRM to have provided some kind of default ending, or leaves them with the right to establish an ending of their own, in the event of GRRM's death.

GRRM used to say that if he died before the series was done, tough- he apparently uses some archaic word processing program and won't let anyone else access his files or some shit.  Can't remember where I read that, but it was forever ago (ie- pre show) so that's likely not the case anymore.

PD- what twist are you talking about in ADWD?

John getting "killed?" That was set up pretty well I thought- he sends everyone loyal to him away and constantly refuses to listen to any other Night's Watch dudes.

He uses Wordstar DOS to write lol. He has said he doesn't want anyone writing the books if he dies, but he recognizes the show would go on. Hence why he has given the show runners the basics of where he's going, narrative wise.

The Aegon reveal. People have been expecting a (most likely fake) Targaryen to show up since the House Of The Undying prophesy, which was not in the show. I have a feeling many people are going to consider it a cheap twist. Hell some folks who read the book even felt it came out of nowhere, although the clues were in the first two books (in GoT, Varys and Illyrio's plot to bring Viserys and a Dothraki khalasar of savages to Westeros doesn't make much sense, without a second card up the sleeve).

I think it's pretty clear Aegon isn't "Aegon," and is actually a Blackfyre. And that's another piece of the story which the show hasn't delved into.
