Okay folks.

I'm not what you call a "baseball fan".  In fact, I probably only attend one Jays' game a year, and haven't given a real damn about them since I was ten years old when we repeated as World Series Champions.

But people who I thought knew baseball blew a metric fuckton of smoke up our asses over the winter about how the Jays were now heavyweights and favoured to go to the World Series.

And yet, on the 4th of May, here we sit with a 10-20 record.  And I can't help but think: "FUCK any playoff delusions!  What the FUCK are they doing with the 2nd worst record in the AL after 30 games?!"

So tell me, baseball peeps.  Is this something explainable in baseball terms, or is this just the Toronto sports curse rearing its head?

The Blue Jays acquired some pretty big names, but most came with a certain amount of risk (age, injury history, year-to-year inconsistency), and so far almost all of their major acquisitions have seriously underperformed.

RA Dickey, Josh Johnson, and Mark Buehrle are pitching much, much worse than the team expected.  Melky Cabrera is looking like his good season was all steroids.  Jose Reyes has played well when he's not injured.  Maicer Izturis has been just awful.  The players they kept have taken a step back too.

Basically there was some overhype (I think Baseball Prospectus still projected the Yankees to finish ahead?) but it was reasonable to expect this group of players to play much, much better than the current bed-shitting standard.  It should even out over the season.  It almost has to.  But they've probably dug themselves too deep a hole already.

Mandark covered it all well. There was some overhype, and actually Baseball Prospectus had them finishing 4th (I'm pretty sure), but Vegas usually is at least decent with these things and they were favorites in the AL. It's just that literally all that could go wrong has gone wrong. Whatever, I have nothing to add on top of Mandark, really.

Edit: Forgot to mention that I started rooting for the Jays. I even bought a hat. This is why they suck, sorry.

I will never forgive him for his 2007 September that cost the Mets the playoffs and Wright the NL MVP.

I thought his story that he used PEDs because of the pressure in Arlington but stopped once he went to New York checked out!

That was an absolutely appropriate end to our season... bullpen coughed up the lead because we had to rely on guys in roles they weren't meant for, and then our guys struck out 1-2-3 to end the season.

I honestly can't be mad with the outcome considering all of the crazy bullshit that happened to us over the course of the season... this isn't a team built to win in October unless it's insanely hot (like those two long winning streaks) because we don't have a dominant starter to anchor our rotation, and our lineup strikes out a shit ton, which is baaaaad juju in October when you're facing dominant starters.

Offseason will be interesting... we aren't gonna be able to keep McCann, and Hudson comes off the books too.  I'd like to see us get a dominant starter, but not sure who on the market fits the bill to be honest, or if we could even afford him if there was somebody worth signing.  Then, you also have to consider that whenever we sign somebody to a big deal (Derek Lowe, Uggla, BJ) they immediately turn to shit, so.  Yeah.

Of course, my main solace is that I'm going to wake up tomorrow and not be a Mets fan.
