I remember being excited about 1313 when I saw the trailer and they were going into this big tower and I was all like 'omg star wars looter shooter rougelike with high production values"! Then later on it became clear it was another take on the  'escape from AAA dangerous places' and I was all  :-\ :-\ :-\ .

Sad to see Lucasarts go, even though Larry Holland's space combat sim games haven't dated all that well they did represent one of the formative pillars of my gaming tastes.

In a generation where online multiplayer shooters reached the widest possible audience ever, and the console cycle lasted the longer ever. Yet they still couldn't put out a battlefront game says everything that could ever be said about their management.

Weren't they licensing Sam & Max and Monkey Island to TellTale Games?  Was the Back To The Future game a Lucas property too?

They were but I think Telltale was trying to move away from that stuff. And honestly after the first Sam & Max Telltale game, I think my nostalgia was sated.

I would love for them to do something with the Grim Fandango universe but they seem to have no clue.

Disney needs to auction off the adventure game IPs and those IPs need to be bought up by Double Fine [Kickstarter, if necessary].

Publicly, Disney is saying their current games could be licensed out to a different publisher or developer, but according to our source, that's unlikely. Our source says Lucas has pursued the option for "one or both games," but nothing happened. "With the teams now basically being dispersed I think both games are effectively dead forever," our source said.

still history, but EA got the license to make Star Wars games.  Visceral, DICE, and Bioware are planning Star Wars games.

Quote
BURBANK & REDWOOD CITY, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- The Walt Disney Company (NYSE: DIS) and Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: EA) today announced a new multi-year exclusive licensing agreement to develop and publish globally new games based on Star Wars characters and storylines.

Under the agreement, EA will develop and publish new Star Wars titles for a core gaming audience, spanning all interactive platforms and the most popular game genres, while Disney will retain certain rights to develop new titles within the mobile, social, tablet and online game categories.

“This agreement demonstrates our commitment to creating quality game experiences that drive the popularity of the Star Wars franchise for years to come,” said John Pleasants, Co-President of Disney Interactive. “Collaborating with one of the world’s premier game developers will allow us to bring an amazing portfolio of new Star Wars titles to our fans around the world.”

“Every developer dreams of creating games for the Star Wars universe,” said EA Labels President Frank Gibeau. “Three of our top studios will fulfill that dream, crafting epic adventures for Star Wars fans. DICE and Visceral will produce new games, joining the BioWare team which continues to develop for the Star Wars franchise. The new experiences we create may borrow from films, but the games will be entirely original with all new stories and gameplay.”

Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Battlefront 3 was finished, and it basically looked like Battlefield.

This will be the THIRD time Battlefront 3 will be made:

Rebellion's was about 60% done when Lucasarts took it from them and gave it to Free Radical.

Free Radical's was finished. It just needed time in QA.

Then Lucasarts did First Assault, which was basically a Battlefield 1943 version of Battlefront 3.

yeah, EA will do better than the Lucasarts of 2005-2013, but that's not saying much.

And while Bioware and DICE's games are sort of obvious, it would be nice if Visceral made a new Jedi Knight-style game.  Dead Space already has dismemberment and force powers.

God damn it... another generation of disappointing Star Wars videogames guaranteed. Did EA ever do anything good or memorable with LOTR or Bond? The answer is no. They came close with Bond at least, but fuck me, EAs guaranteed exclusive involvement is simply terrible news.

I thought The Force Unleashed was shitty, but outside of Battlefield, I fully expect new depths of shittyness to be plumbed here.
