Seems like 2014 was the peak and it has been diminishing returns ever since as far as actual technological advancement is concerned.
In fact, features have been removed since then for no reason other than making phones cheaper to produce or to have them expire more quickly or in order to sell you expensive, short lived dongles (Apple Airpods). S5 was the last flag ship phone that had it all: There was a version with two sim slots AND a separate microSD slot (called S5 Duos). No modern phones have that, Samsung dropped it after S5. User replaceable battery (but water proof nonetheless). Infrared blaster (you can use an S5 as remote control, Samsung ditched this feature after S6).

You couldn't pay me to use a phone from 2014 these days, either hardware or UI. This post is wicked rose-tinted breh.

I'd probably recommend a Samsung or a Motorola. Oneplus is the best hardware for the price but I'm suspicious of Chinese phone manufacturers and data gathering.

You didn't know? Google is against jacking it.

No offense, but you don't know what you are talking about.

In case the timestamp doesn't work, jump to 20s in and have a look at how well LineageOS 16 (Android 9) runs on a regular S5 (G900F). And that's an old video from 10 months ago when LineageOS had just been ported; it's getting improved every day. As I said, I actually installed it myself on an old, unused S5 a few days ago, so I can confirm S5 is lightning fast with LineageOS 16 and no different speed wise than a phone from 2019.

I wasn't making the case that old phones running current-ish software are deficient, just that both hardware and software have moved on from 2014 and I disagree things were objectively better back then.

It doesn't do this for me. No discernible lag. Smooth for surfing, too. No stuttering at all.

How exactly, when you can run modern Android software on the old phone?
Other than having a better camera (though remarkably, the S5 can record 4K video and has HDR), what exactly can a new phone do that the old one can't? When using LineageOS, even the limited internal space (only 16GB) doesn't matter; thanks to no bloatware you don't need more than about 5GB for the system, and since you can easily turn on root access you could always move large programs to micro SD with apps like Link2SD or App2SD. And obviously you store videos, images, music etc on your micro SD, too.

2013 thread :bow

I got a Nokia 8.1 (?) with Android One. Does its work, no complaints here.

 :respect
Although, I've had a couple of issues with one or two apps not being compatible with Android 10. Sometimes getting the latest OS before most others isn't great.

It should be self evident why running new software on old hardware is suboptimal. Likewise, hardware in recent years hasn't stood still either (fingerprint, cameras, Face ID, NFC/contactless payments, dedicated security modules, et al.) Spending less and feeling thrifty certainly sets of the dopamine receptors pretty well, but in most respects you get what you pay for.

The company that made my phone is shutting down. RIP. https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2020/02/andy-rubins-smartphone-startup-essential-is-dead/

Andy Rubin is bad at running a company.

Not a Pixel 4 standard or whatever it's called. Have one for work and the battery is dogshit.

At this point, does it really matter?  You can always just get an adapter to plug them in anyway.  Props to the companies who provide this accessory with their phones.

They should get rid of the charging port and bring back the headphone jack. If I wanted to buy headphones I had to CHARGE I would move to North Korea!!

I would immediately lose airpods and I look like a dork with these over-ear headphones.

What are my options? :existential

Can you charge and use headphones at the same time?
