In celebration of RE5 finally being announced after the franchise has had a long 8 year break,  talk about how fucking awesome RE4 is.

I just passed the part with the giant Salazar statue.  You cross the bridge and the giant statue takes it out-- the game is like "NOPE, STILL NO BACKTRACKING" after you've been running forward through unique maps for like 12 hours aside from very light backtracking to get into the church.  Been through here a bunch of times, but it still gives me the chills, knowing the next chapter is gonna be somewhere completely different that I haven't visited yet.

BAN HIM

In all seriousness, I like how they gradually introduce the enemies.  RE5 is like zombies with chain guns right off the bat...by RE6 it's basically a well trained and disciplined zombie army.

Best game ever. 360 version controls take getting used to but after that it is go time.

The fucking labs are coming up soon for you Don. :bow

This is false. They don't use guns in RE5 until the last two chapters.

aren't they in that early rail section?   oh well, im prob misremembering.

and yeah, psyched for the labs.   just waiting for the sun to go down to play (it shines right on my TV),  hopefully beat this thing today.

I like the end of the previous chapter, where you get up to the door and think you're gonna just head right through to the tower.  NOPE, gotta get through a giant underground section first to get the key!  My mind was blown the first time I played that part.

Enemies don't take out guns until you're well into the manufacturing plant and lab. The first time they introduce guns they also introduce the cover.mechanic and that is at the end of the game.

i couldn't get into the wii controls.  i play the game in multi-hour chunks, so it gets annoying holding up my arm to aim the whole time.    and for some reason, I was getting annihilated at the section after you meet the merchant the first time.

Perfectly paced game. I also like how the enemies gradually get tougher. First you're mowing down melee towns folk, then they start throwing shit at you, then that chainsaw guy. That shit is tense, especially as he runs up the stairs.

So RE5 isn't good? I kind of want to get it on PC

So bad you needed to reassure yourself it wasn't all just a sick fever dream? Then the cold reality hits you and you realize life is nothing but a bitter disappointment where everything is terrible and nothing makes sense?

That's a bunch of hyperbole... boulder punching aside, RE5 was a fine action game.  It just wasn't RE4, but as has been said previously in the thread, few games are.

Then again, why expect a guy sexually attracted to little girls to be capable of reason.

Nah. It was trash. It had awful forced co-op design with tedious levels and enemies. Nothing about it was interesting. It just gets worse and worse. Finally you're Gears of War-ing it up with THE WORST COVER MECHANICS in video games.
nat

Himu

Forced co op design? You mean the game I 1000d by myself without ever playing co op? Trash design? It is mostly the same as RE4 with less variety and even RE5 has moments that shine (the swamp lands, the sun palace). You mention GoW cover shooting but RE4 had the SAME EXACT THING.

it's got the TPS part down and a fair amount of unlockables including mercs which makes it worth playing for sure, but it is a step down from RE4 in all other areas.

The entire game is designed around co-op. Regardless of how you played it, it's a co-op game first and foremost and it's terrible. And I do not recall RE4 having cover mechanics at all. It got shooty at the end, and it was when the game started to lose me (as mentioned before), but it goes FULL BRO SHOOTER in RE5 and is aggressively bad.
nat

RE5 has superior replay value, more collectibles and unlockables, better Mercs mode (being online), and more tight controls. However, it isn't as well designed as RE4, lacks its hilarity and AAA script, difficulty, and sense of isolation. RE4 is best game all time material. RE5 was just goty status. That doesn't make it bad though. No game I replay 5-6 times with a clock of 50 hours can be bad.

I can understand not liking RE5 as much as 4. I don't either. But the endless hyperbole surrounding 5 is annoying. Speaking as someone who 100%d the game without touching co op once I think a lot of people discredit the game without any merit.

Irrational haters gonna hate, Himu.

RE5 is like the first girl you kinda get serious with after that major relationship to date in your life.  You had some fun with her... but couldn't stop comparing her to that earlier girl, and it just didn't work!  Or something.  You guys can find me writing reviews of games for Jezebel, coming soon.

When we play through MGS3 we know having to constantly change camo and eat can get a bit tedious but the game as a whole is a fantastic experience and we can forgive the minor flaw.

When we play through HL2 we know the airboat sequence goes a little long but the game is such a bar rising experience that the small fault can be forgotten.

i think, at best, it's a lateral move for the franchise.  Some things took a step back, some things improved...everything seems to have a counter aspect that sucks/is good.  It's like RE4.2 or RE3.8, depending on how you look at it.  That's why i'm calling mikami's new game RE5

HL2 is a bit "you had to be there."   When I played it, I could recognize the awesomeness, but also felt it dragged and was too long in the tooth.

BUT WHEN YOU HAVE TO SLOG THROUGH HOURS OF BORING GENERIC ACTION THAT MEANS NOTHING AND BRINGS NOTHING TO THE TABLE AND THEN HAVE TO DEAL WITH SHODDY COVER MECHANICS AND ENEMIES WHO THINK THEY ARE IN A COMPETENT SHOOTER, YOU'RE LESS LIKELY TO ACCEPT THIS AS A SMALL BLACK MARK

It's also a pretty terrible co-op game. Like did they not have any ideas they could use? Did they just see Gears and felt the need to half ass co-op in the game with no interesting co-op situations.

And if you don't play co-op. The boss battles are just kind of silly in how dumb the ai behaves.

Again, false. Great co op game. You say there's no interesting co op situations when I can think of plenty right off the bat. Like the Licker room where one person is stuck inside a room while another snipes lickers from afar. These lickers SWARM THE ENTIRE ROOM so you have to think fast and group together in order to just survive. Never mind the whole hold Jill in order to beat her situation. It is like half of RE5 dissenters haven't played it.

You're right about the bosses but the boss fights are all shit and the biggest flaw in the game.

re5 gets a lot of hate for the same reason re3 did - it didnt bring much new to the table. they both followed up groundbreaking games and both played it safe instead of trying to outdo the huge changes the previous entries had brought. but both 3 and 5 and solid as fuck and endlessly replayable even tho they dont hit the same highs 2 and 4 do.

i really wish capcom woulda patched in saves for the dlc so i could finish them :'(
