Getting past this and moving forward was the best plan, especially since we have some PSOne RPGs coming to PSN before too long.

Let's not get THOSE rumors started.  It is, alas, not the LUNARs, but these upcoming are not disappointing additions to PSN in the least.  Should go up around E3ish, if all goes well.

I played some bushido blade with a friend this past weekend.  I'll pay a ridiculous amount for a XBLA/PSN/Steam version with online play--$20.  Don't upgrade the graphics or anything.

Normally I'd be all "Landstalker >>>>>>>>>>>>> Alundra," but I never did get to play the real game without the stink of Working Designs all over it.

Anyway, PS1 was awesome.  First system I owned where I was able to literally buy every single game I ever wanted for it.  I just need to get rid of some crap (Working Delays games and another RPG or too) and it will be perfect.

yeah, I was jonesing for a Metroidvania and realized it's been like 6+ years since I last played SotN. So why not the original! I have the Xbox 360 HORI pad which is pretty god-like for emu (best of 360 + decent D-pad)

Not my favorite system, but definitely the most interesting, so I'm collecting it.  PS1 occupies a pretty unique place in gaming history as a transitional system.   Even the kusoge is interesting.  I think the gap in graphical quality got smaller with PS2 + PS3, but PS1 games are all over the map since devs were experimenting.

It might become my fave though.  I've been playing games I didn't play as a kid and they're really good.  So many really weird games that are awesome, like Power Shovel.

The "sister" thread to this one on GAF is pretty fun to read through.  Brought lots of games I never knew about to my attention.

Imma post my collection when I get a chance.

The Playstation is what started me on import games, too- before I couldn't fathom paying the insane prices for Super Famicom games.  But finding out that Street Fighter Zero was coming out in December '95 got me to pay like $90 for it.  I even got two other imports (that Konami Live Power Pro baseball game and the Twinbee Collection, both used so they were like $40 each) before that came out.

I think the most I ever paid for a Playstation game was $120 (lol) for the Japanese version of Tekken 2.  It came out like 10 months earlier than the American version and a shortage drove the prices up.  I actually pre-paid $110 for it and was told they had to jack the price up another $10 when I picked it up.  I went back to the car and asked my dad for $10; he totally lost it and wanted to go scream at those guys for ripping off a teenager.  The funny thing is that months later, I ended up working at that game shop.   :lol

I built up my PS1 collection twice.  Had everything I wanted in 1998, but sold everything off to pay off a debt (TO the game store for buying too many games on layaway!  :lol :-[) of almost $1000, IIRC.  It took me pretty much a decade after that to get everything back again.  The only thing I was missing ended up being the Metal Gear Solid Japanese limited edition, but I didn't care about getting that back.

Landstalker's viewpoint makes it a pain to play.

I don't know about Alundra, but Silhouette Mirage is pretty fucked.  Japan version has unlimited ammo and lets you focus on actually playing the already weird and challenging game.   U.S. version limits the ammo and does other things to make it a giant pain in the ass to play.  WTF were they thinking making major balance changes to these games

Pepsiman is cool.  It's one of the few imports I have for the PS1.  I liked it because it reminded me of 3d world runner on the nes.

My collection is wimpy since this is back when I had to sell game to buy games.  Worst part of it is that I have the case for megaman x4, but have no clue where the CD is. Or that I sold some good games, and ended up with that crappy Ninja game as part of my collection.

Classic Working Designs "rebalancing."

Years back I imported Silpheed The Lost Planet for the PS2.  It was made by GameArts and published by Capcom.  It was a huge turd and I posted about how shitty it was on Usenet.  Since WD was localizing it (Capcom USA knew better!), Victor Ireland had to chime in how they were going to make it better by essentially gimping the options and making shit take more hits, IIRC.   :lol

Don - SM WD version is ridiculous. Shame we never got the real version but I hear Saturn version is better anyways.

WD was cool back in the 16-bit era, when they brought out stuff that otherwise had no chance in hell of making it outside of Japan.  Then RPGs got more popular and WD releasing a game meant it took 3-4 times as long for it to come out compared to another publisher releasing it.  They also had some questionable localization choices with pop culture references (I still remember Popful Mail's"Melrose is on at 9 and I need my weekly dose of Heather!"), but I can see how attempting to actually LOCALIZE a game could in their favor versus a straight-up translation.  But RPG players didn't want that shit.

I never did play Ore No Ryouri.  Need to try that sometime.

Ore no Ryouri had probably the coolest demo. I've always wanted the full game. The fact we never got a translation always devastated me. But I don't think you need to know Japanese to put it off. Still had one of the coolest and unique uses of the dual shock dual stick set up I've ever seen in a time when right sticks were used for more than just cameras.

Thinking of it, Ore no Ryouri would prolly work well on smartphones

You don't need to know English, and a guy on gaf made a game inspired by ore no ryouri for PC and ipad called "cook, serve, delicious."  It's pretty good.

It needs to show up on PSN one of these days.  The PS1 imports up there now aren't worth a damn.  I'd rebuy it just to play on Vita.
