My biggest concerns with the XB1 was potential gold pricing and locking games to one account and not the console. Clear those up and I am happy.

Perhaps most intriguing, however, is that Xbox One gives game developers the ability to access Microsoft’s Azure cloud computing platform. That leads to a few obvious and immediate applications: All your downloaded and installed games and achievements are synced to the cloud and can be accessed and played without interruption on any Xbox One you sign in to; stable, dedicated servers for every multiplayer game rather than the notoriously fragile practice of hosting matches on one participant’s console; even multiplayer matches that can grow to 64, even 128 participants, rather than the usual limit of 16 or 32.

If they wanted to focus on the dying thing known as TV in a product that has to last 7-8 years, I don't know why this didn't have a built in TV tuner. Or if it has to be cable box dependent, why not make it a Slingbox competitor and have an app on all smartphone platforms to stream all your DVR content to your phone and tablet? That's how people access content.

Sounds like there will be a 'used' digital marketplace that Microsoft is the gatekeeper of.

I'm ok with this, especially since it'll spur other companies to follow suit.

 :mindblown

would you not rather be your own gatekeeper of the shit you own and sell? If a game isn't loved enough to warrant someone keeping it, publishers don't deserve secondary payments for their resale

Eel is right. MS seems to be focusing entirely on dudebros and 32yo fathers. There are going to be a lot of confused parents and grandparents at GameStop this holiday season, and to be perfectly honest I see no reason for GameStop to help them; what financial incentive do they have to sell this console?

I bet at least a third of MS' exclusive 15 titles are Kinect shit, xbla stuff, and Viva Piñata. Maybe a Who Wants To Be A Millionare game hosted by Courtney Cox.

I mean, they couldn't even put together a clear message of what their system is about on the day they unveiled it (other than "watch TV!"). Look at all the MS people who were contradicting each other in interviews, twitter, etc. yesterday. How the hell are they going to explain all this convoluted bullshit to Moms and Dads in a clear and concise fashion, when they apparently don't even fully understand it themselves? This came off like the Wii U unveiling, only with better graphics, less BC, and 1000% more Drew Carey.

I'm surprised MS laid all the bad news on the table before focusing on most games. CoD, Forza, and Fifa are pretty good games but they seem to be completely overshadowed. Oh well, still not buying one!

see I got the complete opposite from it, they showed exactly what their new console was about.  I always thought kinect and apps were annoying but ignorable but at the same time I knew they were dangerous and I guess I was right.  I have a buddy who got the Kinect bundle because he told the Best Buy guy he wanted "the best 360",  I wonder how many other clueless people out there did the same thing and now we have the xbox one.

But it's not an all in one box; you still need a cable box. If you're a non-gamer interested in this as a streaming box, you'll have to pay an XBL sub on top of your monthly Netflix/Hulu/HBO subs. Why would a non gamer buy this instead of a Roku?

Microsoft’s Mattrick says he doesn’t think compatibility is really a problem. He said only 5% of customers play older games on a new videogame system anyway, so spending time and money to develop technology to allow them to play older games isn’t worth it.

“If you’re backwards compatible, you’re really backwards,” he said.

The NFL and Microsoft, through its next generation Xbox device, are combining to upgrade interactive TV viewing of pro football games in a multiyear agreement announced Tuesday. The next step after that, perhaps as early as 2014, will be bringing technology to the sidelines on tablets.

The deal is worth $400 million over five years for the NFL, according to a person familiar with the agreement. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because financial details have not been made public.

"When you think about the sidelines, what is most important for us is how you make the game of football better, make what the coaches and players do better, using technology but preserving the competition," said Brian Rolapp, chief operating officer of NFL Media. "The challenge is how to bring technology to make it a better experience for them and for the fans.

"You can start with how we communicate with each other, whether it's game officials or coaches. Coaches can look at formations as they develop. We'll look at how do you do the still photos better, get more into real time? Is there a more efficient way to give replay officials a way of doing reviews better through technology?"

That's for the future, albeit the not-too-distant future.

Fans will get new television viewing innovations, including the ability to watch games, Skype video chat with other fans, view statistics, access highlights in real time and gather fantasy information about players and teams -- all on a single screen. For those who prefer multiple screens, fans can get an even deeper experience on mobile devices and tablets with SmartGlass technology.

$400 million. Not for Sunday Ticket, or any access to actual games. $400 million for fantasy football, "Skype," and other interactive features people already have on their fucking iPhone/Android/iPod/Laptop. For all the shitty stuff MS showed yesterday, THIS is the one that makes the absolute least sense.

Direct TV pays a BILLION just for Sunday Ticket. MS is paying nearly half, for nothing.

EA footage was pre-rendered, again:
http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/22/ignite-wont-power-fifa-14-on-pc-xbox-one-trailer-was-pre-rende/

Quote
"The video uses assets pulled directly from the in-game engines, and was rendered to create this first look multi-product trailer," Frost said. "It's representative of where we expect our games will be when they launch."

EA Communications Specialist Brad Hilderbrand promised us a closer look at Ignite at E3.

"Yes, given the timing and planning required for the Xbox One reveal event the EA Sports Ignite video was developed in a pre-rendered video format," Hilderbrand said. "We'll be showing off the game using in-game assets at E3."

This turned out to be worse than my most pessimistic assumptions. I mean I already knew I wasn't going to buy one, but this is above and beyond bad.

I don't usually hope for products to fail on the market, but this is a rare exception.
