It's not like they need DRM to give out review and preview code as downloads. It's just that they don't, for whatever reason.

 :rofl

Laugh all you want, but it's working.

TotalBiscuit got all snarky about it, and a guy in PlayStation Publisher & Developer relations owned him:
https://twitter.com/amboyes/status/339086421904203778
I'll believe it when I see it. A PS rep would naturally say that fan input matters, that doesn't mean it does.

These aren't PR reps responding...

A marketing guy and a producer have responded so far. I'm going to bet right now that this has no impact on anything. If the PS4 blocks used games, it was decided months ago.

Now I certainly believe that Sony would be very smart to blow MS out the water at E3 with a no-DRM announcement, thanking the fans for convincing them. But I doubt it will happen.

I could see Sony doing it for their own games but when the biggest games on their system will be probably be third party games it will be a very empty gesture.

Do people really think EA and Ubi for instance will let Sony off the hook that easily?

It would be a big enough win for Sony if they could shift the DRM blame to 3rd parties.

Yeah, they're going to pull some kind of weasel thing cuz there's no way they'll tell the third parties to fuck off.

yeah, i think at best they'll stick their flag in the ground and defiantly state that they've listened to the voices of their customers and boxed first party PS4 retail games can be resold without any extra fee. for this, they'll be heralded by gaffots as consumer champions, who will all already own a PS4 18 months later when sony rolls back this policy due to it becoming standard industry practice.

PS4--no money from used games
X1--money from used games

That would certainly be interesting to watch.Gamestop would push PS4 and publishers would push X1.

I bet that Gamestop would try to push used PS4 games pricing closer to X1.

Old?

http://www.polygon.com/2013/5/27/4370610/microsoft-applies-for-tv-achievements-patent

Quote
A Microsoft patent published recently reveals that the company is looking at awarding achievements to users for watching linear video content.

The patent, which is titled Awards and Achievements Across TV Ecosystem and was first reported on by Games Industry International, explores the idea of rewarding viewers with achievements in a similar way that games on the Xbox 360 reward players for completing certain tasks within video games. The patent does not indicate which platform this technology would be applied to — there are no references to the Xbox One, Xbox 360 or Windows platforms — however at the recent Xbox One reveal, Microsoft focused heavily on the console's television-related features.

The background of the document reads: "Traditional television viewing experiences tend to be passive, and do not frequently provide opportunities for a viewer to engage with the programming. Additionally, with the proliferation of digital video recording devices, advertisers are finding it increasingly difficult to introduce their advertisements to viewers."

It continues: "To increase interactive viewing and encourage a user to watch one or more particular items of video content, awards and achievements may be tied to those items of video content. Producers, distributors, and advertisers of the video content may set viewing goals and award a viewer who has reached the goals."

Examples of goals listed include watching an entire series from beginning to end, watching a certain number of commercials contained within the linear video content and "performing a specific action while watching the linear video content."

Awards listed in the patent include virtual viewer scores (presumably similar to Xbox Live's gamer score) and physical awards like coupons and products.

What kind of third-party DRM are you guys expecting? An one-time code embedded on each disc? I think Sony will just continue to use online passes. It's a good way of squeezing out $10 from sales of used games.

That gaf campaign for no DRM on PS4 AND Xbox One is at once wonderful and on the other hand inevitably going to fail.

I wonder what the reaction will be when it does?

the console's ability to compute processes on the cloud is "definitely an area where the Xbox One has a step up over PS4, and it opens up for many interesting things.

"It's perfect for open-world games like ours as it enables techniques to make the game worlds more alive and social, such as persistence and asynchronous multiplayer features," he continued. "We are already using server-side computations in our PC hunting game theHunter, so that's nothing new for us as a concept. But Microsoft's solution may allow us to do this more efficiently and to a greater [extent]."

Has Q3 engine been open-sourced yet? I recall them saying it would be a while yet, as there were still paying licensors using it. That was a couple years ago though, so if it's still not been open-sourced, I bet this is the cabbage which is keeping it from doing so.

http://www.mcvuk.com/news/read/xbox-one-pre-orders-ahead-of-ps4-at-some-retailers-although-ps4-enjoys-post-xbox-spike/0116289
Quote
MCV has received word from retail sources that pre-orders for the Xbox One are tracking ahead of PS4 in many UK stores.

In fact, one told us that in the 24 hours after Xbox One’s reveal last week the total number of pre-orders it received for Microsoft’s machine outstripped the total number of PS4 pre-orders it had accrued since Sony’s reveal in February.

There is some good news for Sony – the same sources revealed a significant increase in PS4 pre-orders in the day following the Xbox One reveal.

The consensus is that many gamers were waiting until they’d had a look at both machines before making their buying decision.

The numbers may well some surprise some online onlookers who have seemed to delight in revelling in the PR mess Microsoft has created itself since last week’s reveal.

But they should also serve as a reminder that the angry internet masses are often not representative of the wider buying public.

Microsoft:

Please know that we hear you... (but that doesn't necessarily mean that we will do anything about it)

No climb down coming IMO. And that response from Sony to the #PS4noDRM tag makes me think they might just be being a bit more quiet than MS about their pre-owned scheme...

no way will the video game community be down with anti-used/drm systems. No other physical media does this. It's an expectation and these companies are fighting basic psychology. But lol gamers are weak;etc lolol

Not to mention that more than gamers will fight this. Entire countries will be suing MS and Sony up the ass. It's half the reason I don't believe Sony is implementing what MS is doing, or at least in the same manner, because Japan is their base and Japan has a HUGE used game market. So far they've lost to MS and Nintendo in NA, Vita is bombing, so putting this stuff into ps4 in JAPAN would not only be foolish it would be suicide. Microsoft can do this gamble because they're fucking MICROSOFT. Sony, however, isn't in the position to do ANYTHING like this.

yeah, now that I've had the time to think about it, a lot of this might not matter one bit.

Once they fully reveal it, even if it is as bad as we think, it won't appear as bad as we think and naysayers will quickly be crowned with tinfoil hats.

MS is just waiting it out before E3 before saying anything.  They probably predicted a huge backlash to the reveal conference, but knew the games conference at E3 would make up for it and it was just meant to get the word out about the console, no matter how.
