The difference is like...here's all this free shit, tons of it, and okay, sorry, but online MP is in there to now.   Whereas Gold is online MP primarily and you get to use netflix and get some discounts, week early demos.  and now 2 free games a month...starting with 2 bullshit games.

But this BC thing, it comes more or less standard with a computer, you see.  And once they stopped using different size cartridges, the argument against this being a standard became pretty shitty.

I suppose there are scarce few, if any PS3 titles at this time that I would want yet would not be sold on Sony's downloadable marketplace at some point in the future.  There are probably some.


This may help my decision since it'll give some insight into how Sony operates nowadays - I'll give an example, how is their pricing now for like downloading, say, Final Fantasy XII on the PS3?  Is it even sold?

If I'm not being an ass, the real reason they don't do it is because the architectures are very different.  Ps1 BC in PS2 was possible because the ps2 had a ps1 in the thing.  Same with PS2 on PS3.  gamcube -> wii -> wiiu works because its basically the same chip.  Ps3 is too damn expensive to add to a ps4.  Also emulation is a bitch, as the 360 proved. 

Its standard on PC 1) because of a greater software layer, 2) because MS has to make sure it works anyways for non-gaming software.  Games are pretty much a by product of that.

Well, I don't think it was purely a business decision to drop legacy support for PS3. The architecture for that system was insane. None of the games would be easy to port over without it being in the system.

Then again, I wonder if the PS4 would still be cheaper/the same price as Xbox One if they threw the Cell in there.

The same thing MS is facing the PS3 is facing. While the Cell chip is expensive is also true there's too much "divide" for them to just carry that back to x86 and emulate it. At least that's to my knowledge?

You aren't playing them on the hardware. There are PS3s sitting in Sony's building that will play the game using your inputs, and output the video to your PS4.

That's for the streaming service (think Onlive but its another group) since they acquired Gaikai. The aim is to get the entire Playstation library playable on it (PS1, PS2, PS3) but apparently it will be some PS3 games first

Just to further add: Back in 2005 MS/Sony bet on IBM/PPC due to Apple and Mac's starting to become "all the rage" and there was (IIRC) some push to go to PPC in the tech sector because it was still having a small increase in returns (but it was starting to "peak" then IIRC). However as soon as MS and Sony started to finalize their hardware is when Steve Jobs and IBM had their fallout due to PPC taking too much power and not having enough increase in performance to make that increase in power worth it (plus being terrible for their laptops battery life) to where they switched to x86/Intel and the rest was history.

If MS and Sony could turn back time, I'm sure they wouldn't have gone down the PPC route but hindsight and all that...

As for Gakai: I wouldn't really count on that. Onlive couldn't get off the ground due to bandwidth issues in the US. I can't see Sony's version doing that either. I'd say get a cheap PS3 when the PS4 launches and hopefully Sony drops the price, get whatever used games you want to play and play them instead of doing Gakai even if Sony is being generous by offering everything for PS+ subbers. The input lag and streaming lag wouldn't be worth it to me.

My memories fuzzy of the situation but you're reasoning and mine was a mix of the two. PPC was getting some buzz while Apple was starting to pick up the college-kid market. It was a pretty hot architecture at the time. But yeah, going PPC for both really blew back in their faces two months after their contracts were signed and Apple dropped theirs to go Intel in their hardware for battery and performance reasons.

Firmware update to remove the DRM and mandatory kinect. Then unbundle the kinect, and drop $100 off the price.

It might throw devs for a loop that expected every X1 to have kinect, but better to unbundle it before launch than be faced with a Wii U "tablet albatross".

Spec sheets already confirm XBONE to be 65% larger than the PS4.

Also PS4 has no power brick, it's an internal PSU and this is TBD for XBONE.

I'm not sure how the PS4 can be so small. It's also very light at 2.8kg or 6lbs. Compare that to launch PS3 at 7kg or 15lbs... PS4 is only 40% of PS3 weight.
