Okay, okay. Now...just imagine...an open-world car combat game set in a post-apocalyptic wasteland where you have to scavenge supplies while trying to avoid running afoul of roaming gangs.

Because...I just imagined that.

Well, you could play State of Decay for that, but the car combat is pretty meager (destroy your car driving into a Zombie Horde!), and I'm pretty sure you're anxious to be a lone wolf archetype instead of playing an entire community of survivors.

Also, you KNOW there's going to be a BarterTown and Thunderdome in this...

AM EXCITE.

Combat across Mad Max’s giant, dusty world is split broadly into two camps: car combat and on-foot combat. While a lot of attention is being paid to four-wheel warfare, Avalanche also describes Max as a capable fighter, and he is. A brutal, physical one, with an unapologetic lack of finesse.

In any given circumstance, Max can use his fists, his harpoon and his shotgun – which can be customized as he salvages scrap from the wasteland – and random objects littered throughout the world. Our E3 demo saw Max spear a wastelander through the stomach before blasting another one into multiple bloody pieces with his shotgun.

This is a bloody game and Max fights dirty, so stealth is not a big focus, but if the situation presents itself Max still has the ability to sneak up on enemies behind and perform takedowns with his knife. One gets the feeling that keeping things quiet isn’t the focus of Mad Max, however.

No Mad Max game would be complete without an elaborate car combat system. Thankfully the team at Avalanche agrees, putting it front-and-center in the game’s E3 presentation.

Your fully customizable and upgradable rolling wasteland weapon has a variety of physical attributes including weight, horsepower, armor quality, tire grip and more – all taken into account when scrapping with other wasteland citizens. Rather than scripted or canned button presses (although Mad Max also has these), when two cars smash together the result is determined by each car’s stats and simple physics. The damage to your car, how far you’re tossed and the general severity of the aftermath could in theory be different in each and every collision.

At least, so said Avalanche in our hands-off demo. In practice, most enemy cars seemed to crumble like paper and explode like they’re jam-packed with gasoline. Ramming them out of the way looks like Takedown Mode in oldschool Burnout. A much better-looking Burnout, at least. Mad Max’s fire effects look truly next-gen, and plenty of details like elaborate debris and flying car parts give each explosion a level of fidelity that’s never been seen before. We’ll have to wait for a hands-on session with a farther along version of Mad Max to truly judge whether Avalanche has delivered on its promise of a more physical car combat experience.

Mixing things up, enemies aren’t content to simply stay in their vehicle. They leap with reckless abandon from their own desert buggy onto yours, only to be dispatched a moment later with a bullet-time-assisted blast from Max’s trademark shotgun. Adding to the insanity, players also have a harpoon weapon at their disposal. It can be used to dismantle specific parts of an enemy vehicle (think tearing off a front tire), or just to yank the driver right out of his seat. Nice.

After the carnage is concluded, players can scavenge parts or other resources from the wreckage and use the spoils to improve their ride. Giving extra attention to the aforementioned stats, of course. Adding a heavy-duty ramming grill to your vehicle might seem like a no-brainer, but it adds a lot of weight, hurting your performance.

When players aren't taking down enemies, players can drive off to explore the world map, which includes other encampments, visual vantage points to scout the terrain, and fuel, food and scrap parts convoys. The map will also show where a highly valuable vehicle is located, giving Max incentive to nab it for parts.

I actually never knew that's how you spell wary.  Guess it makes sense since it's probably derived from the same origins as "beware"

The funny bit will be the multiplayer, because everyone will be trying to be Max, and babying their own "last of the V-8 interceptors." I'd rather play the midget with the kabuki mask on a pole, or the autogyro captain.

(Image removed from quote.)

The image of Mad Max that is ingrained in pop culture comes from The Road Warrior, where he didn't look like that.

Point taken though. I just wish they made him look more like Gibson.

Mel is fucking psycho about allowing his likeness in games from what I can recall.
I didn't know that. I'm trying to remember Mel Gibson games and all I recall is Braveheart. I remember stories about Tom Cruise being strict as fuck about his likeliness in games. The main character in the Minority Report game was blonde because of that, which is funny because the Mission:Impossible games still had a dark haired Ethan Hunt.

they could've used Tom Hardy seeing as he's Max in the new movie.

speaking of weird game casting, I vaguely remember Activision hiring an actor to play Bond for its original Bond games (Blood Stone in particular), then switching to Craig at a later point.  EA did something similar and its first original Bond game didn't have Brosnan's likeness.  But I guess it's better not to get tied up with the films or something.

Agent Under Fire was an original actor and VA. Nightfire had Brosnan's likeliness but not his voice, which was super fucking weird. I guess he didn't feel like doing VA or thought doing so was beneath him. Of course by the time Everything Or Nothing was in development he had starred in Die Another Day so I guess he had no pride left.

The official line from Cruise's PR is that he fears lending his visage to games would dilute his brand. He's insane though so he probably does think the polygons will capture his essence.

I think if Apocalypse had been a breakout hit we would've had more A-listers in games. You know Bruce deeply regrets being involved with that game, probably moreso than that stupid dog cartoon he did in the early 90's.

Yes, apparently Brosnan was a dick about being in the games. When he finally did the VO work in the studio, he was insufferable. I've also seen interviews with him where he has said just how much he ended up disliking the Bond role overall, as well. Sounds like he's not a particularly grateful guy.

I still love Brosnan though. The Broccoli's are a pain in the ass to deal with, and all the Bond actors haven't had the best of careers afterwards. Connery despises the Broccoli's. This years Oscars show really showed just how much resentment there was for the actors, except for Roger Moore who is a total bro.

It's weird that Connery did the voice acting for the From Russia with Love game.  That game in general is weird.  That's one of the worst Bond movies to make a game out of.  And releasing it in the mid-aughts when it didn't coincide with an anniversary.  All in all EA did better with the license.  Goldeneye Wii was the exception for Activision, but EA's games on the PS2 were pretty good, and Everything or Nothing is still the best Bond game.

I guess Activision still has the license, but after closing every studio that made Bond games, there's no one else to go to.  I'm gonna assume beenox is shut down and spider-man games are in limbo too.

Gibson's of the age bracket where he probably just doesn't like video games and thinks they're a waste of time or something. I really wonder if they'd use his likeness even if he was down with it, considering.

They were going to have a big Bond anniversary thing where all the actors got on stage. Brosnan and Connery wouldn't go because they hate the franchise owners. I think Dalton was busy or may have had beef too. Only Moore and Craig were willing to go. They ended up doing some whack tribute instead.

Connery actually agreeing to voice FRWL is weird as hell, but it's a lot of money for a very small amount of work. That's why all those animated films get big ticket talent to provide voice work. Willem Dafoe revealed in a gaming magazine that he took the role in Everything Or Nothing because they paid him a boat load of cash. As for FRWL...it was really awkward to hear an ancient Connery voice a young and nimble 007.

Weren't they originally trying to disassociate it from the movie so people didn't assume they were connected and it was just a game of the movie?

That seems to be slightly backfiring with Fury Road looking awesome and stylistically so similar.
