As a kid all I had was an N64, so I didn't play the PS1 FF. I saw them, friends would play VII, I saw the commercials ect. I knew what the series was and thought it looked cool, but I couldn't play them.

Anyway, it's 2001 and I'm starting to actually get into anime and well this big summer movie comes out that appeals to me. It's called Spirits Within and this is my first actual FF "experience". My mom takes me to see it and well I enjoyed it. She will at least remember how pretty the movie looked, which basically sums up what she thinks of the series.

Going further down the months and it's Christmas 01 and I receive a PS2, mostly because of GTA3. I think I got GTA3, Tekken 3, Crazy Taxi, and something else I don't remember. I also got a PSM subscription which would then tell me about MGS and whatnot. Anyway, during the holidays, my family use to be big on renting stuff because everyone's off. Now I remember FFX from that Tonami review.



and I thought it looked awesome. So of course that's the first game I rent. Now, quite honestly this game was a revelation to me. I'm always been looking for guys that make me feel like I'm on a journey and well I think FFX was the first game I played that did that well. It was also kind of the only jrpg that I had played outside of Pokemon. I was kind of use to exp and whatnot, so well I thought the X character's would just level up like Pokemon. So I never touched the sphere grid. Anyway, I was able to get to like the first encounter with Sin, before I returned it.

Anyway, I'm not sure what happen in between this and Xmas 03, but PSM starts talking about X-2. I remember X and want to go back and finish it. So on Xmas 03 I receive X and X-2. I play and beat those. I think I cried at X's ending and didn't like X-2 that much. A couple of days before NYE, the family goes to Blockbuster which has FFVII and I buy it. A few months later I buy VIII from the local Blockbuster. I finish VIII pretty quickly and think it's probably one of the best ones. I mean I still do think it has the best art design and music in the series. Christmas 04 comes and I receive Dawn of Souls and playthrough 1 and 2. Can't say I enjoyed it.

So, it's around this time I'm actually getting into games and branching outside of FF. Xenosaga 1 is the first PS2 jrpg not called FF I play, thanks to Game Informer's review of it. I also try to convenience my mother to spend $100 on FFXI. It dosen't work, I think a year later or something WoW comes out anyway.

I also start anticipating FFXII.

Anyway, around 06, I start making some of my own money and I realize half.com has Square's PS1 rpgs for cheap. I order stuff like Xenogears, FF4, and FFVI and V, IX. The following years I will play through each one at a glacial pace.

Sometime also in 06 I come home from School and see that two FF games have been announced and I am pretty excited.

And lastly in 06 FFXII comes out on Halloween and well I don't need any candy. I spend the whole day playing that damn game. Got it from Circuit City for $10 off the MSRP. It's a pretty awesome game.

Anyway, I patiently wait and wait for any info on these new games. I watch all the trailers, I think I watched the XIII first announcement trailer millions of times. It was pretty amazing to finally get the soundtrack for the game and listen to the actual battle theme on my ipod. I was actually worried for XIII because the director also directed X-2, a game I did'nt like.

Anyway in between the waiting, I beat IX which I think is awesome. I beat IV which I feel you had to be there to really appreciate. And V, which was fun and that's all I remember. I also play and replay X and XII tons of times. I actually had this story regarding XII, where while playing XII I decided to head walking down stairs and gashed my big toe almost right off from something on the stairs. I call my mom and then go right back to playing XII.

I also finally played XI on the xbox and it was merely ok.

Anyway, XIII comes out. I like it. People hate it. I defend it. I often think my liking of the game was overblown on GAF. I liked it, but it's not like I thought it was the best game or anything. I knew it's flaws, but was ok with them. I just don't think it's as bad as people make it out to be. After this though, I do finally get around to 6, which I think is a pretty fantastic game, well beyond it's limitations. I also played the PS1 version which got the job done.

And so then XIII-2 comes out, which you know I think is a pretty terrible game honestly. The battle system is neutered, monsters suck, the story is awful, and quite honestly I don't like the way levels are presented.

I skip 14 because it's on the PC.

And now were basically caught up to date. I haven't played 3. I'll play XIII-3. I'd like to try out 14 and versus now called 15 still isn't out.

Final Fantasy is a very special franchise for me. At one time I could say it was my favorite series. Even now, when I replay games like 7 and find them mind numbingly easy, I can't get past the nostalgia. It just has a big place in my heart.

FFVII was my first. I drew FFV art from the import shop ads in the back of game magazines because I thought they looked cool. But before that I never heard of Final Fantasy.

Final Fantasy VII was my first rpg, jrpg, and FF. It really blew my mind and I was the perfect age for it (12). Before FFVII, all I played were platformers, sports games, and fighting games. I didn't even know what an rpg was beyond being in Super Mario RPG's name. It literally changed how I thought of games, how I approached games, and what kind of games I preferred over night.

I got my playstation and FFVII for Christmas but I didn't have a memory card for a full month. I'd play that game in the dark, trying to see how far I could get. My favorite part were the characters and the story. I never got as far as the Shinra building without a memory card. I remember that time distinctively because after I died, I heard my mom and dad having sex in their room. That has been burned into my mind. It's weird because, I can remember exact days and key moments related to my FFVII progress. Like the day I finally got a memory card. I decided to cat ass it all day. Our garage door was broke and a guy came to fix it. He left a magnet that we attached to our freezer door in the garage. Every time I look at that sticker I remember leaving Midgar, and exploring the world for the first time and seeing the Kalm flashback that night and then jumping on top of a dolphin's nose the very next day (a Sunday).

I was really bad at FFVII. I ran away from battles all the time just to get to the next story part. Doing this on top of playing without a memory card for a month in fact weaned me and gave me my first jrpg lesson. I now fight every battle in every jrpg I play.

I remember the night I beat Final Fantasy VII. I beat it, stared at the screen, and a friend rang the doorbell and we went to a regional territory indie pro wrestling event at the local Bingo hall. I started a new game of FFVII later that night.

 - After FFVII, I heard of roms. I remember reading in the EGM 100 article (I still have this issue) that VII was the sequel to VI, which was originally III. So I dled snes9x and dled Final Fantasy III in 1998. It owned. I didn't see it as a step back from VII, at all. Quite the opposite, in fact. I thought it was much harder though and could not hack it. When it was announced that Squaresoft was releasing it for the psx I stopped playing the rom.

I got FF Anthologies and played the fuck out of V and VI, greatly preferring VI. These days I prefer V but that changes on mood.

- Then FFVIII info came out. It sounded really crazy, and was probably my most anticipated game. I got that game, loved the first disc, thought the junction stuff was confusing (the only jrpgs I had played to this point, were 7, 6, and Pokemon). I liked the game, but not as much as VII. I restarted it multiple times because the junction system DID NOT MAKE SENSE AT ALL at the time and people were still used to the idea that levels meant everything in VIII. I beat it and didn't like it very much in the end, but still respected it. I'd troll it on forums. A few years later, I went back and replayed it and it became my favorite. I think I finally came to understand it and I loved it that much more.

- Before FFIX came out, I was playing with roms again. There was no word of FFI-IV coming to the playstation stateside, so I dled FFI-III nes and FFIV. I think this was when my rpg skills truly became a test and I somehow managed to beat FF1, albeit with a guide. But I was still proud of the accomplishment. I went on to FFII and it was the weirdest rpg I encountered to that point (and by then, I was a seasoned vet beyond Final Fantasy). FFIII, I didn't like, and never beat the rom. FFIV, I liked about as much as V and VI. I love the snes FF's. By the time I was a decent ways into the game, Final Fantasy Chronicles was announced so I stopped. The versoin I played was FFII snes, so FFIV psx (hard type) kicked my ass. Still loved it.

- Final Fantasy IX is a really big game for me too. It came out ONE WEEK BEFORE THANKSGIVING BREAK. I got off on the first bus stop and walked to the mall (my neighborhood was next to a mall) to pick up FF9. It was the first game I reserved. I worked hard to pay for it. I loved the fuck out of FFIX, way more than VII and VIII in fact, at the time. My friend Johnny and I were racing each other, and I managed to get off of disc 1 and a ways into disc 2 during Thanksgiving break. FFIX came out in late November, and I beat it on Christmas day 2000. For me this was unprecedented; I beat the game in a month. Something that took me 6 months or more to do with VI,  FFVII and VIII. I was a freshman in high school, my grades were slagging that first semester. Somehow I managed to pull it to all A's despite playing nothing but FFIX every day after school. :lol FFIX at that point was my favorite FF. That changed later but I fall in love all over again every time I play it, and it probably would be a top three FF for me if the battle system weren't slow as hell.

- Final Fantasy X :heartbeat I bought this without actually owning a ps2. I got it on release. In USA FFX was supposed to come out in January 3, 2002 or something. Square pushed it to fucking December, a week before Christmas. I bought it without having the means to play it. I played the SHIT out of that FFX demo though. My friend let me borrow his ps2 for a night and I played it over and over. :heart I didn't have a memory card with my ps2, but I learned my lesson with VII, and bought a memory card the very next day. Fucking love that game (at the time). I was a week behind everyone else because Christmas was a week later and I got a ps2 for Christmas. Despite that I still got as far as my friend who started playing a week prior. I got to the Calm Lands, fought that boss that's near the bridge next to Yojimbo's cave, and then school was starting again. I beat FFX on Easter Sunday 2002. The next three months were doing sidequests and crap. I played the absolute crap out of X.

- Got X-2 on release. Got FF Origins on release and FINALLY beat FFII. Got FF Tactics Advance on release. Beat the fuck out of original FFT in 2005 (missed it when it came out). Got Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles on release. Got FFXI on release for the pc, loved it until I hit a wall, then stopped paying. Got XII on release, wasn't big on it until I replayed it, now I think it's the best FF. Got FFXIII on release, played it twice and meh. I've skipped out on FFTA2, Renevant Wings, the later FFCC games. I skipped FFXIII-2 AND FFXIV and I plan on skipping FFXIII: LR.

- I used to be a head moderator on a big Squaresoft fansite and was a big news contributor. FF used to be my gaming love and I actually used to BUY systems just for the FF name. I bought a gamecube, not for Zelda or Mario but Final Fantasy CC. I bought a psp for Crisis Core. I bought a ps3 for FFXIII.  I have played every main series sp Final Fantasy at bare minimum two times.

Final Fantasy 7, 1999. This local card/comic/miniature shop had some TVs set up in the back where you could pay a small fee to play N64 and Playstation games. Aside from many rounds of Goldneye, I also played the first hour or so of FF7. Needless to say, I immediately wanted both [despite not actually owning a Playstation at that time].

And I thought that opening CG sequence in FF7 was pretty boss, even if the graphics couldn't hold a candle to Ocarina of Time.  :obama

I played FF1 on the NES. I had a Genesis during the 16-bit era, so I missed the SNES ones. Bought an PSX in 1998 (primarily for FFVII) and played IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, and IX on it.

I played the original when it came out in the early 90's or late 80's or whenever the fuck it was.  It was ok but wasn't all that great.  I remember enjoying the Dragon Warrior (Quest) games better back then.

After the 8 bit gen was done, I got a genny instead of a super nofriendo, so I didn't play any of the 16 bit games when they came out.  I played the superior (except for III) Phantasy Star games.

Then, of course, like everybody else and their fucking brother I played VII.  Again, ok but overly hyped imo.  VIII kind of sucked, but I really, really enjoyed IX.  Four party members!  Less angst!  Focus on fantasy!  Cute as fuck black wizards!  I was even able to overlook that the main character had a fucking tail.  Besides, I changed his name to Josiah the Wonder Pimp, whatever.

Upon making the upgrade to PS2, I found the series lost a lot of it's charm.  Maybe it was playing X after IX, I dunno.  I also (hangs head in shame) played X-2.  Meh.  Awesome mechanics but I couldn't finish it due to the stupidity.  I though XII did some interesting things poorly and enjoyed it a lot.  I don't play mmos, so I never played XI or XIV, and I also no longer play shitty games just because of their names, so I didn't bother with any of the XIII games. 

I can't see myself playing XV.  FF as a series is kind of emblematic of what's wrong in the industry in general and with Japanese developers in particular.  Hurry up and die, the tears will be delicious.

i remember buying a psx and we had exactly 3 original games,syndicate wars,oddworld abe odyssey and the first tomb raider... then we modded it and the same guy who gave me those 3 original games also gave me a warez copy of FF7 and it was the most amazing thing ever,i always loved the graphic style and OST of FF7 and even today i look at it as the most amazing thing ever to happen in a videogame

i even had a strategy guide written by a certain dave malec... i'm not sure how i got it cause the thing is all in english (remember that i live in 'urope) but i've kept it around as a memento,here are some of the amazing tip on it

"listen to the advice that chocobo billy has to give. you don't want to end up with any under par chocobos in your stables"

i loved all the shit squaresoft released on psx,most of the more esoteric game (xenogears,parasite eve,chrono cross) i got them warez but i actualy had original copies of FF8,FF9 and FF10... i think i even had FF9 amazing official guide with all it's "GO CHECK PLAYONLINE FOR THIS TIP"  :yuck FF6 and the other got shortly played with an emulator along with chrono trigger,i've never liked FF4 much but i always tought of FF6 as a prototype of FF7

as far as i'm concerned i stopped caring around 10-2... by then the dream was dead,you can argue that "it's dumb animu and childish" but final fantasy (starting from 6 at least) was always about setting and characters, things that got pretty much murderized when 10-2 and 11 happened,12 was pretty much the nail in the coffin

yeah... PAL land never did receive much attention from nintendo so it shouldn't come as a shock most people ignored console (i had an amiga and X86 PC before psx for example) before the glorious psx came into life and therefore played FFVII as one of their first rpg (i think the firstest one i ever played was suikoden but don't tell that to himuro :shh)

not to mention psx was also the first console that was really easy to pirate which just made it even more widespread

Saw Final Fantasy 1 for the NES in Nintendo Power, had to have it. 

I don't think I beat it as a kid, even with the guide, but I at least got past the point where your characters transform. 

Didn't play 2 for the SNES

Played most of 3 for the SNES, I may have finished it then but I never actually bought it, had to rent it a whole bunch and probably lost my save.  I beat the GBA one a couple times.

then the next one I played was VII, I guess.  beat it

Skipped 8 and 9

X was one of the first PS2 games I got, beat it

Skipped XI

Bought X-2 on launch, beat it

Pirated XII when it leaked way before launch, beat it

XIII on launch, beat it

XIII-2 at some point, played a few hours

and here I am this morning, failing to login to the XIV beta.

Got FF1 upon its initial release, pretty sure it was Christmas, and it had just come out. Was excited about it because I loved Dragon Warrior and Nintendo Power had hyped it up pretty heavily. Yay eighties! Played the absolute shit out of it, although it took me a long time to finally beat it.

Had to wait until the SNES for FF2/IV. Was so hype for it, but it was expensive, and I could only get games for birthday or Christmas at that point, so had to content myself with playing through a rental. I got as far as I could countless times, usually the fucking magus sisters. I tried to rent it every weekend, sometimes dragging parents to other rental places when it was out. I got to continue my game every once in a while, but usually found all the saved replaced with level 1-5 games with filthy names. This was the undercurrent of an entire summer if I'm remembering correctly. I like to think I would buy my child something they wanted so badly, but I'm pretty sure they knew it wouldn't be healthy for me, and were being better parents than I will be. I didn't actually own a copy until much later in life since I managed to finish it multiple times while renting.

Was a pretty big nerd at that point, and geeked out over series. Learned that FF2 was (OMG!) really part IV and that we had missed some. Fell into hype cycle for FFV, only to see it never come over. Followed VI as much as possible, but getting info was tougher before the internet.

Didn't have a problem getting FF3/VI. Cracked the hell out and loved it. Even the opera scene. Finished it multiple times, even if I didn't like the story as much as IV...

Was old enough not to be as obsessed with games by the time of the great Nintendo betrayalton. Like everyone, was shocked FFVII was going to the Playstation (How could they do that?! There was that siggraph demo!).Then the issue of Gamefan came out with all the pics and info, and got mad hype. Frothing. Like many, I bought Tobal just for the demo, and played it repeatedly. When it finally dropped, I'm pretty sure I skipped school for the day to go get it. Think I was a senior in high school, so that was pretty sad.

It was kind of goofy, and the translation was obviously poor, but there were a lot of things it did very right. Everything was great until after the first disc, and it started going off the rails. The badass with spiky hair turned out to be a crazy coward, and I kind of finished it and was done. A few of the other gamers I knew went all in on it, doing all the crazy weapon bosses and whatever, but I kind of finished it and put it away.

Was absolutely blown away by Final Fantasy Tactics, shoddy translation and all.

think I got around to playing II, III, and V at this point. Was pretty unimpressed with the first two (they were ancient at that point...although appreciated systems that were incorporated into later games...). Really liked the ideas/system in V, but story was pretty lame.

FVIII I went in apprehensive. Did not get very far. Thought draw system was stupid, and characters sucked. Returned it and got something else. Have never completed.

FFIX was supposed to be a return to form, but felt kind of half-assed. Got through it, and it had its moments, but didn't really leave much of an impression. It seemed like a missed opportunity, and I guess I just couldn't relate to the characters. Maybe I was too old at that point.

FFX I actually thought was pretty good, even if it was written for teenage girls. Had a pretty fun battle system, got through it all!
FFX-2 I own but haven't really played for more than a few hours due to it being a bit embarrassing. I've always heard the battle system is awesome, but never got back to it. Thinking about getting the vita rev (and probably not playing it).

FFXI was fuckawesome. Got it at PC/NA launch, and it was the first time in years that I got completely into a FF, or even lost myself in a game to that extent. It was like a treadmill infused with complete nostalgia. It nailed the world, music, systems...and was completely unforgiving and a chore. Due to this, the community was awesome, and very tight knit. The lows were very low (waiting around for grind parties mainly), but the highs I've never really found in a game since. Making the mad dash to Jeuno with a few other noobs, grand sense of exploration, and probably the best world/soundtrack in the series...if square had any sense, they'd have made an offline story set in this world years ago. I digress.

Got into it pretty heavily for the first six months, had to stop because it was wasting too much time and I recognized it was pretty self-destructive. Kept an account for years, and bought most of the expansions though...didn't put enough into it to get to top-tier or anything, but loved the crew and world too much to quit completely. Probably my overall fave FF along with IV.

XII I was insanely hype for, and had massive hopes for. Matsuno helmed, apparently he was addicted to XI for a while and wanted to carry over the best elements...everything leading up to it had me very hyped...until development fell apart. I bought it day one, but it didn't grab me like it should have, and I had a lot going on. I really need to get back to it at some point I guess.

XIII I actually got around 20+ hours in, it was kind of pap, but there were enough things to like about it where I probably would have completed it. Then my 60 gig Ps3 bricked and I haven't had the urge to restart.
XIII-2 I bought new for like ten bucks. It's still in plastic LOL.

XIV was a hot mess. I was pretty hype for it, but it turned out to be....a wreck. Put out way underdone, but there were a few redeeming qualities. Base graphics were pretty great in places. Music was great... world was decent. It was just boring and borked. Square owned up to it, and began fixing it while not charging for it. playing during this was pretty awesome...they improved tons, and since it was free I dicked around in it every once in a while. Don't have time to be super hardcore or anything, but almost maxed a job out. They started charging toward the end, and had an event sequence where you witnessed the destruction of the world. It was pretty awesome.
XIV RR/2.0 seems like it's going to be fantastic. Don't think it's the second coming of XI, but I really couldn't make time for something like that now anyway. I am totally fine with a really well done FF themed post-WOW MMO at this point. Will probably be playing this for a while. The producer brought in to salvage the project has done a tremendous job, and has earned a massive amount of trust/respect from the community thus far. Hopefully this goes well for them.

XV looks pretty fucking awful. It seems like the culmination of everything they've done wrong with FF since forever ago.

I don't know if this is the longest post I've ever typed out on the internet or not, and not sure how I feel about it.  :-\

I imported FF6 for the SNES back in '94 and I've played most of the other games in the series since then.

FF7 on PC was my first experience with FF

I thought it was pretty good but found the combat and character customization to be lacking depth in comparison to PC rpgs

Next was FF8, played it for 4 hours but found it boring and quit

I didn't play FF again until I got a PS2 and bought FFX on day 1.  It was pretty much like 7 but with improved presentation and more involving combat.  Overall, it was a fun experience although it dragged a bit.

I tried FFX-2 and FFX12 but couldn't play either for more than an hour.  I think I just got sick of watching so many cutscenes.  Also, the characters and settings of both games didn't seem interesting

FF13 was bought day 1 but once again it was only played for about an hour.  Auto-combat felt dumb and I didn't want to trudge through 10 hrs before it gets good

I have played and owned:
3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13,fft and fft advance.

Ff13 is my least fav one. Ff7 my fav.

I have only finished like 5 or 6 of them.

I got my free Dragon Warrior from Nintendo Power and I gave it a really fair shot, but that game is what I think of when I think of obtuse 8-bit RPG RNG.

I played the first Final Fantasy when it came out back in the day on the NES, then played II/IV and III/VI on the SNES. The first game was fun, but I didn't get hooked until II/IV on the SNES. Still one of my favorite games of all time.

I didn't have an original Playstation, so I played VII and VIII on the PC. I bought a PS2 a few months after launch so I picked up IX, then X, X-2 and XII. XIII and XIII-2 on the PS3.

Went back and played the releases of II, III and V when they came out over here.

I think DQ was on 2 or 3 in English by the time FF1 came out.  A case could be made, I think.

I played Dragon Warrior first and I really liked it, but then when I saw FF1 in Nintendo Power, I was blown away. Parties, Airships, OMG!

No played and beat that one later.  The only ones I didn't play are listed in last sentence of my original post.  I played all of the SNES trilogy.  IV is actually my least favorite of that triad, but still good!

I think starting with 7 has more to do with age and location (especially if you were European).. Not a single kid I knew played rpgs and I had a lot of friends with games and different game tastes. The only who ever had an rpg was someone who got Super Mario RPG for his birthday. It just wasn't something anyone played. Pokemon was also a big game changer especially if you were in middle school at the time of its release like I was.

Started JRPGs with Phantasy Star :heart

Ito FF played FF4, FF6, FF 7, then discovered my true love in FF5, played FF1, 2, 3, 8 then FF9 (hated it) then FF10 loved it cause it reminded me of 5 and had an awesome battle system. FFXI never grabbed me I was way to into PSO, FF12 and 13 fucking stinks.

First time I ever heard of "Final Fantasy," I was at an EB Games when I was really young...I think I was 7 or 8.  There was a demo for this thing called Final Fantasy IX there.  I ran around as this faggut looking dude named Vivi.  Had no idea how to play it, so I quit.

When I started getting really into gaming feggitry, I bought Kingdom Hearts for PS2 and was super confused about a lot of the square characters, so I read that a lot of them were in FFX.  So I bought that and loved the shit out of X.  Fucking LOVED the sphere grid.  From there I just bought a bunch of them and played through them.

I've actually never played IV.  There are 10 different versions all with different positives/negatives.   I have the PSP version on my account, is that one okay?
Also, V sounds like the better game, so I started on a translated ROM of that and am loving it.

I said. it was ok, but I didn't turn into a square fanboy til secret of mana. once ff6 came out it ruined my world. I kept in with the series and have played most of them including the spinoffs. I liked most of em too, even the shitty ones, just not the extra shitty ones.

each one has some pretty big flaws but they usually have enough ambition to make up for it. good series overall.

ffiv is one of my fave games of all time and I couldnt get through the after years. Way too much of a rehash from what I played. One day maybe.

Psp rev of IV is pretty good. Don't think I'd play another one.

Yeah, I could smell STANK a mile away from FFIV: TAY. Part of why I'm skeptical on FF: Dimensions despite hearing good things.

As for FFIV, it'll take a lot to make me buy another one. I have it on snes, psx, gba, and ds. I think that's enough. Though I'm tempted to grab the psp one because it's so pretty.

i started after years and the first fucking dungeon is the one with those doors that do the insta-kill move on you aka my most hated dungeon in the entire series. i put it down immediately.

dimensions is legit good. it has its limitations - mostly that the world map exploration is linear - but i went in expecting to hate it and ended up really liking what i played. im only in chapter 2, but what i played so far reminded me of ff5. job system is in, the battles can be a little challenging, music is good, dungeons are solid, and the story will give you nostalgiaboner. but for real try it; i think you'll enjoy it.

the after years is completely terrible but better than 8.  too horrible to play, though.

PSP 4 is a prettied up 4 GBA with more bug fixes than even the EU GBA version.  I give it a big thumbs up.
