... Wait what? A mecha vs. kaiju movie directed by Guillermo del Toro? And releasing next week?

I literally had no idea what it was until this afternoon. The trailers look sweet, to anyone who enjoys FX porn that is...

... Though I'm hearing it's tracked to bomb. I've no idea if it's flopping critically, commercially, or both.

Thoughts?

Looks like a movie that will do okay in America and gangbusters everywhere else. Kind of what Hollywood shoots for nowadays.

I really hope that it'll do okay since #1 it looks expensive to make and #2 not gaining as much buzz traction as WB hoped? I mean...

IMAX 3D? It's a date.
yep. Chesterfield Mall ? Itll have to be week after next if you're insisting on weekends, but I could do Wednesday night too.

Sure thing breh. We'll make it work.

Everyone I talk to thinks it looks stupid because of giant robots. Giant Robots don't even seem popular with even the western anime fandom, the group you'd think would be all about this movie.

The Adam Sandler movie?!

The Mayans were right-- this is the apocalypse. The lamer version. One Idris didn't cancel, and no giant robots are fighting kaijus. :'(

It's like we live in a world where brain-dead Transformers wasn't a multibillion dollar property. Though granted, that's a popular IP.

Pacific Rim will probably have very good word of mouth, so I wouldn't wave the white flag yet. Plus the international cast/focus could at least ensure it recoups the budget.

Controlling them is too much for one person, so they plug in two people, one for either side. To synch correctly they wire their brains together. I guess practicing dance routines with video tapes isn't enough for that these days. Tsk.

Also, human drama.

If it was up to me:
- The monster would appear in the first 5 minutes.
- Switch scenes to the White House, where Obama picks up the phone and orders to unleash JIHADIST-3000.
- 2 hours of monster vs. Robot.
- Roll credits.

I admit that the marketing tagline "to fight monsters they created monsters" gave me a Nietzsche-nerd boner.  I hope that the film itself follows through on the implications of that in some way.

how does sharing memories with your co-pilot help fight monsters  ???

One of the pilots constantly has flashbacks of playing catch with his father. In the flashbacks, he's crying and his father says something to him, but he cannot hear the words. Then towards the end of the movie, with the monster poised to defeat the American mecha, the pilot finds himself drowning within his robot as water rushes through the control center. Time slows down, and once again the flashback returns. But this time his father's words are clearly heard: "that's alright son. Just remember to always do your very best."

*cue triumphant music*

The pilot tells his co-pilot about his father's words, then they defeat the monster. The end.

Transformers wasn't popular cause of giant robots, it was popular cause it was based on a shitty cartoon Americans grew up on and was directed by a guy whose movies are always successful due to stupid Americans enjoying them.

I don't hate Michael Bay, the Transformers movies or any of that. It just bores me so I don't care to watch it. On the other hand Pacific Rim fullfils many of the things I want to see in a giant mecha movie and then some. It is not an adaption of a very large and fondly remembered franchise by a famously successful director made for the lowest common denominator, so it won't be pulling in great numbers and I'm fine with that.

No, because Mainframe weren't afraid to give the finger to the toy company's whims, within the extent of their ability.  And they paid the price for it afterwards.  Plus, Mainframe was pretty good at storytelling, as seen from Reboot.  Sunbow on the other hand were literally founded, owned, and operated by an advertising company.

Okay, that works too.
