I tend to just see movies during the day and some weeks after release. Less people, less chance of some fuckwit being on their phone through the whole thing.

I went today at 1:40, which was nearly ideal.  If only it hadn't been Summer, then the group of annoying 10 year olds wouldn't have been in the theater...

Himu you're using the film with a shirtless Henry Cavill as your example?

Do women really go see a nerd movie in droves just to see a guy without a shirt on? Women tend to look for stories more so than physicality. Though being hot helps, I'm not convinced any women will go to see fucking Superman just because the lead actor is shirtless. I don't see any evidence for it.

I have a female coworker who doesn't know fuck all about superman but was gaga to see MoS just because of Cavill.

And you're trying to become a woman? :P j/k

movie was really fun and i'll definitely watch again but holy god the cheese caught me off guard. i figured with a movie about giant robots and a single female character with speaking lines that itd be pretty lol but i didnt expect to be cracking up at every single line. i liked the goofy characters tho, great nostalgia there that reminded me of old sci-fi and action movies i grew up on. all in all its a great movie if youre a huge nerd, which all of us here obviously are.

A friend of mine paid for me to go see a matinee with them this morning. They wanted to see it in 3D though. I have to admit that I was wrong. The first time I saw it in 3D it was blurry as hell. But this mornings was crystal clear and the effect was great. Shit!

haha I'm sorry man. The first screening I saw really did look horrible in 3D. Like awful. I only allowed myself to do it again in 3D because I was literally the only one on GAF who hated the 3D. Plus I loved it :lol  most fun I've had in 3D since avatar

I pretty much loved the movie. There were many nerdgasm/nostalgic moments. For example, I even loved the scenes where the Jaegers were being dropped by helicopters-- they reminded me too much of my old toys in that state lol. The action was perfect, albeit hard to follow at times. The acting though, holy cow not the highlight by any measure. So many cliches and bro moments that even fell short of being cheesy awesome. Thank god everyone was easy on the eyes and sporting sexy accepts though, that was their saving grace. I also disliked how they were strongly suggesting a love connection by the two leads. I was hoping for a stronger female and more of a loveless companionship, but who're we kidding-- the intent was to have dumb fun and hero archtypes, not progressive themes and deep characters.

I'm also thinking about seeing it in d-box since I already saw it in Imax 3d.

I don't think the foreign box office will help at all. I can see it being moderately successful but on not very. I doubt the movie can break even.

The foreign markets LOVE big American movies with expensive CG and tacked-on 3D.

Fantastic.  Campy.  Fun.

It was perfection.

I was telling Mups this but I really only have two complaints:

1. No cannon shot from inside a kaiju's mouth to make its head explode in a gooey mess.

2. They had a single sword, but no swords in EACH HAND. This is REQUIRED. I was hoping for them to use a boost, and then the Jaeger does a whirlwind and SLICES UP THE KAIJU with its dual swords Gundam Wing style:

This movie had a script more tightly focused and less idiotic than any MGS game ever in the history of anything.  I'm just going to assume that anyone who equates the two has Downs'.

(not saying PR was even "good" in the traditional sense of the term, just that it's a fun popcorn flick that doesn't take itself too seriously, and that MGS is written by someone who should be slowly fed to pigs)

Even while the writing was cheesy and the dialogue was laughable it was tightly written. There's not a lot of fluff. So at least while it may be silly it is still consistent and pertains to actually moving the story forward. Unlike mgs.

Probably not. 190 million for production and who knows how much for marketing. 55% or so goes to the studios. I'd say it needs around 350-400 million to break even. I don't think it will happen.

Haven't we proven with Evangelion that writing something serious and teh matoorz is stupid when it comes to Mecha? I'll take my cheesy lines and corny dialogue in my giant robot beat em up flick over pretentious bullshit, thank you.
Um, I'm not sure what the hell you are talking about. Last time I checked Evangelion was a pretty damn good cartoon regardless of the new movies.

Plenty of good and serious mech anime. With a lot of them from the Votoms guy. Hell Giant Robo exists.
