Yeah I understand that Shinji was not into the whole thing but instead of making him sympathetic they made him sound like a whiny baby.

I wasn't really ever a fan of big robot anime, and I wasn't too hot on PR when I saw the initial trailer, but once I found it had monsters (or "KAIJEEWWWS" as the kids say), my interest was dramatically increased.

Robots fighting other robots is BO-RING.

Haven't we proven with Evangelion that writing something serious and teh matoorz is stupid when it comes to Mecha? I'll take my cheesy lines and corny dialogue in my giant robot beat em up flick over pretentious bullshit, thank you.

This is stupid. Among the best mecha franchises, particularly Gundam have serious story lines.

You're judging this off of Evangelion, which sucks. Regardless of storyline.

Most robot v robot story lines are actually human v human. I prefer my mecha franchises to have main characters deal the with the ramifications of their actions. But I'm down for a mecha story that's cheesy and fun too.

Im not hating on Gundam. I've seen most of it and most of it is mediocre. Stuff like Wing, 0083, ZZ, F91, V isn't anything special compared to the bright spots like G, First, and 0080.

What about plain old nostalgia, you judgmental prick trashcan mold horror!? >:C
I realize that's problematic in and of itself, but I still have a soft spot for that dumb show and its cryptic bullshit. Everyone mainly loved the show for its combat scenes, anyway. Asuka's last stand is just fantastically beautiful violence ballet.

Movies that are depending on overseas grosses need even more money to break even, because the pie gets sliced up even more thanks to local distributors.

I remember when I first watched anime and thinking it was the coolest thing ever, then coming to find out that the Japanese treat anime fans with as much contempt as Americans do to comic book fans.

I feel I was made a slightly better person that day.

Slightly.

I watched Eva TV series when I was about 30, I think. It was great until the last two episodes, where I felt like Anno was aiming his annoos at me forehead and streaming shit all over it.

I am hyped for anything from Del Toro, and the idea that this is robots vs kaiju just makes it more tasty.

This movie was pretty much fucking awesome.

Guillermo Del Toro is legit. He knows how to make a movie. He can take a basic concept and turn it into something amazing. Everyone should see this movie. It's for kids, adults, men, women, old people. Everyone.

Dude so like, I love the fact that the concept of two pilots is not only used to give us two characters to watch and interact with but it also allows the movie to flesh out the characters with actual scenes that detail their back story and explain their motivations. Instead of just boring exposition sequences.

Like, in most movies you would have a scene where Character 1 would reveal something from their past to Character 2 and would go on a long dramatic speech detailing something that happened to them or explaining their view on a matter. And you know what? That's fine for all intense and purposes but for a movie as visual as this, it slows the pace of the movie and just doesn't work. Or in another movie you would have a flash back showing something that happened to Character 1 while Character 1 narrates it to Character 2. There's nothing wrong that that either, and it likely would have worked in this movie but in Pacific Rim they managed to do just that. However they did something that both showed the flash back and it also tied into the in-movie fiction.

So you have Pilot 1 and Pilot 2 sharing memories and during one dramatic moment, we watch a memory of Pilot 2 and it's used to both flesh out her character, explain the motivations of her and another character, and also builds the relationship between the two pilots. ALL IN ONE SCENE! And best of all? It works within the context of the movie and doesnt feel jarring or out of place!

It's like Dredd. The bluray will come out, cult following, etc etc. It will be appreciated more since it won't be beaten into the ground.

you understand it's not really good for your career to get demoted, right?  yeah, he'll probably still be able to scrape up budgets, but his value is going to be worth a lot less than it was before pacific rim.  instead of being a promising guy on the rise, he's going to be a has-been.

and there will be no more giant robot movies without jive-talking robots for a long time.  and that's why himuro is sad.  today we learned empathy.

Well there's hope yet for Del Toro.

more giant robot and/or kaiju films?  proooobably not for a while.  and nobody's going to be handing del Toro another $200 million budget again for a long, long time.

There is the new Godzilla film for next year, but I think that's been in production for a while now.

It's a damn shame it didn't take off.  Hearing del toro's ideas for the sequel only makes it sadder.

Just watched this. It was good. Like everyone says the action is great, anything involving the sword is A+. I haven't really been enjoying  CG filled action movies lately, but this one delivered. The dialogue and most of the characters sucked though. The main guy was so forgettable and Charlie was just playing Charlie with less funny lines.

Also, Eva was a good show.

Besides whatever effect this has on Del Toro's career in particular, this looks like another knock on using an original IP for a blockbuster.

What were the last big event movies to do well without drawing on recognizable source material (outside of animated movies/comedies)?  Avatar and Inception?

#1 movie internationally and hasn't opened in China or Japan yet. I thought maybe word of mouth would help in the US but I guess not lol.

Getting close to breaking even, and the DVD/Blu Rays will push it over the top regardless. I think the film's saving grace could be that Legendary wants a franchise. This could be it, but the sequel will need some heavy studio demands. Specifically add a male actor women give a shit about, and add some romance.
