When doing the mental calculation for whether a movie's "done well" or "done poorly" I usually don't factor in international ticket sales. They're usually a crutch for the movie to break even, but if it doesn't cut it in the states it seems like the executives consider it a failure and won't invest more into it. There are exceptions of course.

*Hollywood accounting means everything's a success, somehow, lol.

Hollywood accounting means nothing's a success, which is why you get points off the gross, not the net.

You can argue that even Del Toro himself shows you can barely break even and manage a sequel. Hellboy being case in point. Then again that was also a fairly low budget affair and only slightly increased the budget for the sequel.

That said, I don't think a sequel is completely out of he realm of possibility. The first movie does, ok overall. But the real success is that it makes people aware it exists. The movie percolated in the system for awhile. BD/DVD gets released, somewhat cult following arises, it's on VOD, Streaming, HBO, etc. Clamor for a sequel starts up.

You can see a scenario where they make another one, but it's not guaranteed in any stretch though.

As much as I love PR, I'm just glad it got made (you can't take it back motherfuckers!). I'd just as soon see del Toro do something different than PR2.

I suppose I'd be lying if the GDT fanboy in me wasn't rooting for a blockbuster, but even rationally it'll be nice if the BO ended up sufficient enough that they'll still give him money for the next film. A $200M At the Mountains of Madness was never going to happen, even if he had Nolan/WB-level clout with the studios.

the similarly hugely budgeted Golden Compass bombed the shit outta Murica and utterly killed it internationally, the sequels could have been made cheaper too as the tech they needed was already built, we never did get another one, did we?  That same story happens all the time.

Pacific Rim looks pretty good next to actual bombs like White House Down, The Lone Ranger, and R.I.P.D, but just because it didn't shit the bed entirely (it still don't look great, and best case scenario it looks okay) doesn't mean people are going to rush to make a sequel, or give Del Toro another mega-budget to play with.  Of course I think I'm just parroting Oscar here, but the man has called it pretty well.

I wonder how a Golden Compass adaption would do today. Seems like audiences would be more receptive and far less butthurt by alleged religious slights

The implication is that religion, specifically Christian religion is a corrupt tool of oppression, and even the real beings which are the source of the myths are similarly corrupt and abusive. In the end, the children go on a mission to kill God.

The first book is must-read. Really enjoyable.

The later books are good, but do not feel as internally consistent as the first.

The ending is satisfying in a literary way, but left me a little emotionally disappointed.

There's an anti-religious message that gets heavier as the books go on.  Probably what he's talking about.

"yeah if you like a robot kicking monster ass action movie, then you'll love a slow turn based wanabee philosophical anime game".

This is the game the article should be about.

The extent to which Citan is one of my heroes cannot be understated. The opening hour or so of Xenogears is so powerful, so ripe with meaning, that I get all weepy just thinking about it. (The rest of the game is too. lol)

I'm sure in a move not surprising anyone, I also like Xenogears. But comparing it to Pacific Rim is so dumb. As far as mech things go, these two are polar opposites.

The advertising has been ubiquitous for the past week, and it opens in just over a week.

Unfortunately, it opens here on the day I leave for the USA. Will it still be playing in California after the 9th?

Hasn't it already made a profit? I know foreign BO returns aren't simply handed out to the studio, but the film cost 190m to make and will probably surpass 400m by the end. Marketing budget didn't seem high either.

Pacific Rim has done okay, but not great.  Maybe enough for a sequel, and well enough that all the panic about del Toro having to direct episodes of the Kardashians to make ends meet was a bit overblown.

Rule of thumb is 3x the production budget to break even.

I'm confused, did you buy tickets for Pacific Rim and then go see different movies once you were in the theater? Or did you go to the theater with the intention of seeing different movies, but then decided to see Pacific Rim instead?

That's correct, domestically, anyway.  By this point probably almost all the money from any ticket sales is going to the theatre.

According to io9, that was true up until about a decade ago, now every weekend is treated roughly equally:

But after a bunch of theater chains declared bankruptcy in the early 2000s, these frontloaded deals started to fall out of fashion, says Doug Stone with BoxOfficeAnalyst.com.

Nowadays, with many of the bigger Hollywood blockbusters, the theater chains just get a standard cut of the whole revenue, regardless of which weekend it comes in.
