Grats to Gundam again. I had a feeling Seattle's defense would give the Broncos trouble, but I didn't expect THAT.

I know Aikman and others were quick to say Manning's legacy will not be impacted by this but let's be real: he has struggled in the playoffs since he came into the league, and played rather average in the one SB he won.

BTW the Seahawks are the poster boy for the importance of having a good GM. They have built a very good team over the course of YEARS. The seeds for tonight's win were sown many seasons ago in drafts, smart FA signings, etc. Sherman was a 5th round draft pick (in part thanks to Harbaugh being an asshole). Shut down corner, in the 5th round. Russell Wilson was a third round pick who multiple teams ignored. Anyone who saw him play in college could tell he was the real deal. Likewise, anyone who say his appearance on Gruden's QB Camp could tell he was going to will himself to success.

Also, a coaching staff that gets the best out of players; same goes for the Broncos. 46 players in the Super Bowl were either unranked or 2 star recruits out of high school. These are guys were were overlooked at the beginning of their college careers and good-but-not-great throughout their career. But they play the right way, and when you stack an NFL team with guys like that you win.

49ers build like that, the Seahawks build like that, the Broncos build like that, etc. That's how you win in the NFL. Take notes, Detroit.

I don't follow the NFL that much, but do his teams normally have a good defense and run game? I'm partial to think that he elevates his team in the regular season, but he can't keep it up in the play offs when he has to play good team after good team. It's not like the safety was his fault. A lot of the poor passes by him were due to Seattle's DL getting their hands on Payton. The rest of his team shit the bed too with the turn overs.

It's a long running argument, not just about Manning but with sports in general: if a good player seems to underperform in a few key games, does that mean he's a choker or lacks some intangible gift for winning, or is it just variance in a really small sample size?

Count me in with the Vulcans on this one.  I don't really believe that Pro Bowl QB's are inherently losers based on a few key losses.

"Pro Bowl"

 :heh

In all seriousness, Peyton's teams have always been marred with terrible defenses, sans the year he won.  Denver's D this year was pretty bad, even though they played pretty well in the playoffs up until tonight.

Really though, the biggest problem for Denver tonight?  Their offensive line.  Peyton was pressured every single fucking down.  Peyton as a scrambling QB is never what you want.  I don't blame him for two of the picks he threw tonight.

The thing that surprised me was Denver's focus on screens. I haven't seen those work against Seattle much all year. I thought Seattle was going to be the team that relied on those types of safe, short yardage plays due to Wilson being in a high pressure game; I just assumed the OC would be calling conservative plays. But to see Manning do that was very surprising.

But then again, Seattle completely shut down Denver's run game. When that happens a lot of teams try to go for screens to essentially replace the run game, but jeez...that shit was being locked down hard.

Welker and Decker had been getting wide open all season until tonight.

Everybody's favorite Bill Simmons put forth a theory that Seattle and SF plays with a speed and strength that beats up other teams and that teams have to take time to adjust to because they just don't face that sort of thing in their schedule.

I think Denver was looking to challenge Seattle deep, but Manning was throwing worblers all night. In the second half, they came out with a bit more spreads and then try to get some RAC.

They just seemed shock from facing an athletic team, so maybe there's some merit to the theory about SF/Seatle's physicality.

Manning looked off all night; sort of reminded me of Brady in the AFC Championship, except instead of overthrowing Manning was underthrowing. Constantly under pressure.

Cliff Avril was causing mayhem out there. I was so frustrated by his inconsistencies when he was with Detroit, but he looked good for all the playoffs this year.

I was barely half-focused on the game, if that, but it sure seemed like the 'hawks won all the individual battles, right?

Like Welker and the Thomases never seemed to be open, the running game got shut down, the O-line could never produce a completely clean pocket (even if Manning didn't get hit, Seattle was disrupting passing lanes and forcing him to get rid of the ball quicker).  The case for the Seahawks before the game was that they would just be more physical and outmuscle Denver, and it certainly seems to have played out that way.

That said, there were a number of key plays that all went Seattle's way and a lot were a matter of inches, or split-second reactions.  The kickoff return, the batted balls, the fumbles.  Those are the plays that Bill Barnwell and other NFL geeks stress as being pretty random: fumbles vary a lot from year to year with the same teams and players.  So maybe if you replay this game 100 times, it only turns into a massacre 5 or 10 of those times.  But still, it really felt like a more athletic team just beating up on, and then demoralizing, its opponent.

Not sure I'd put batted balls in the same category as fumbles and broken coverage on a kick off return with respect to randomness. The Broncos OL was getting destroyed all game, they looked out of their league; that's always going to result in bad things, specifically INTs. Whereas fumbles tend to be more random in my view. Thomas' big fumble seemed like it was 100% ball handling (or lack thereof), but then again I noticed he was doing that for much of the game.

I called the game after the very first play, when Manning and Denver's center somehow weren't even close to being on the same page. Maybe that would work out somehow in a regular season game against an average opponent, but the Super Bowl? Against the #1 defense? Geez.
