Doom still kicks ass tho. Its the Street Fighter II of its genre, in that it didn't invent much, but did everything quantum leaps ahead of its competition and remains great today.

With all of the user-created content, I literally played nothing but doom/2 for years and it kept me busy. There was always some new awesome map pack available, and it really got amazing when they started with the source ports and added features to the engine that made it play like modern games anymore.

They just don't make games like that anymore, shit's either too difficult to mod or they restrict it.

Ah, and the days where I would use direct-dial modem co-op play with my cousin and racked up the phone bill like crazy.

Got around to trying some of the doom mods this weekend. Pretty cool stuff. It's weird. They are kinda like song remixes as most of them play on top of the existing game so its this familiar but different feeling.

Demonsteele was definitely very cool. Project Brutality is also pretty awesome. I want to try the DOOM RPG combined with the Doom RL thing but it was a little confusing to setup so I didn't get around to it.

I just thought the whole scene was very cool.

? Use the installer or .zip and it's basically the same as Nethack on Windows. Unless you're talking a Rougelike mod for Doom proper. In which case link me that shit.

Oh you mean DoomRoguelike as a mod, not Doom Rougelike as a Nethack clone. It should be as simple as a normal .wad installer. I'll check later tomorrow if you still need help.

Been back in a doom mods kick. Been playing Brutal Doom 64. It's very good. Very atmospheric. A little less over the top and slower than the other versions of Brutal Doom.

Also been digging an older mod called Doom One which is basically a remixed version of the original Doom where all the levels are connected instead of being broken up by intermissions. So at any point you can easily move from one map to another. There are some other additions and subtractions to levels. Sounds very minor but somehow that change makes the whole thing feel more immersive. I'm playing with project brutality on top of it to add spice although there was a special file I had to track down to make it all compatiable. Here is somebody playing the doom one mod.
