The whole thing is a single touchscreen. :lol

Quote
Curiously, the 2DS is even more of a tablet-style system than it appears at first glance, as it actually features a single large screen in its center, not two separate ones. As one of their cost-cutting design measures, Nintendo reduced the number of screens in the system from two to one, and the appearance of separate screens is merely simulated by the way the case masks out the extraneous portions. This means the entire screen is by necessity a touchscreen, with the upper screen protected by a layer of plastic that sits above it. While this makes no difference for the system's normal functions -- after all, neither the system's firmware or its software would recognize the hidden, inactive zones of the screen or the upper portion's touch capabilities, even if you exposed those portions -- I'm curious to see what hardware modders manage to do with the system.

source? this is the second time I've heard this but haven't seen a solid source

someone will do a tear down to know for sure, but by looking at the thing you can believe it.  placement of dpad/start/select, screen protrusion.

Holy. Shit.

So you're powering a really big screen where a huge number of its pixels are hidden behind plastic  :lol

Also that price is a joke. There's no way the components in that thing add up to more than $50.

Having even worse battery life is straight up hot garbage. That said I bet my niece gets one of these for Xmas or some shit, she's wanted a 3DS for a minute but her folks have been like 'eeeh it's kinda pricey'. There's probably a lot of families like that this will sell to.

i've seen some people saying how this was done "because the 3D is a pointless gimmick and nintendo has seen the way" and while i agree with 3D not being the end of the world,it's pretty clear to me this is more like an half assed price drop done for when pokeyman hits and it annoy me so freaking much

Nintendo has done some great branding between this and the WiiU.

I brought up the shift to tablets and was told NUH UH, POKEYMANS ARE AS POPULAR AS EVER so we'll see

I think it'll still sell a lot but definite a huge hit (like in the 30-40% range) as a result of the recent phone & tablet explosion

I mean, I don't think anyone doubts pokeymanz will continue to be a big seller for Nintendo.  Honestly, I expect a more modest dip than you do- I'd say 20-25% feels right.

I was just wondering aloud why anyone with any discernible taste or critical thinking skills would continue to play that shitty, iterated to death monster evolving sim when you could be rolling with the new on either iOS or android.  But, there I go again, expecting ninthings to have any discernible taste or critical thinking skills, when time after time it's always about nostalgia for them, and never actual gameplay.

Isn't Super Mario Land 3D one of the few games people actually buy for the 3DS?  Granted there's not a lot of these, but there are some areas in the game that will require 3D to be turned on to do something.  Not sure how they're going to swing that unless Nintendo patches those areas.

IAP gaming is the equivalent of that guy who's always standing on the corner next to your work, begging for some cash with the same spiel every day. Sure, you can ignore him and walk by, but wouldn't you rather not have to deal with him?

Unfortunately NSMB2 handily outsold 3D Land so as far as Nintendo's concerned the casuals/kiddies still buying their games don't give a fuck about 3D (which I can sympathize with since I always play with it off, even in 3D Land most of the time.)

Problem is the way I see it that 3D gimmick is probably a big selling point for kids. I can imagine being hyped about that shit aged 8 or so. Maybe kids these days are different though.

It's hilarious that Nintendo manages to screw up the naming of a product, 3 times in a row.

Creepy: I know I could probably get PAD, but it's not that important to me to try it out, unless it appears on the app store I'm not getting it.

Jesus christ - Polygon and Wired falling over themselves :/ "This proves Nintendo know their market!"

err... let's just hold fire until the thing actually produces the sales! This is like when the 3DS price cut happend and the DS outsold it but "WHY would anyone buy the DS when the 3DS is cheaper!? TROLL!" etc
.
Also - whilst i'm probably not the greatest person to consult on purse strings and budgets for families - every single games journo outthere is suddenly an expert on what families with kids are going to buy. I do enjoy the idea that $130 + $40 for pokemon = $170 total - is the out-of-season sales THANG that's -absolutely guaranteed- to happen! Just like the WiiU is a guaranteed hit after the Wii and just like the 3DS is the guaranteed hit after the DS - i think people need to just wait until we see the scores on the board. I'm sure Pokemon will sell gangbusters - but the 2DS still needs to convert and the confusion is going to be rife.

Also - if your a screaming Nthing and you big shouty message is "THIS ISN'T FOR YOU!" then... fuck me. #facepalm

I don't agree with the premise that "every time" is a guarantee - but yes, it's definitely their best hope but the idea that they "know their market" is flawed in the last X years of flapping around - and of course it's counting the chickens before they've hatched -again-.

I'm sure there's some twitching anuses at Nintendo towers.
