I always said Elop was a trojan horse. Now it's plainly obvious. He might even become MS CEO now.

About time, they should start selling a lot of their own branded phones, kinda like the xbox. and still make no money.

Yeah, really. Who didn't see this coming?

There was a lot of butthurt about them axing Symbian and Meego but really, they had no future in the face of iOS & Android marketshare. Still, can't believe they went with the MS lifeline. Maybe they were too far in the red to go Android on their own?

Nokia sounds like a good deal.  I imagine it is something like 50% of Finland's GDP tied up in that company.  If it goes in the toilet, they can probably expect the Finnish government to prop them up with bailouts, tax credits, etc.

Wikipedia tells me their revenues equal about 1/8 of Finland's GDP. I don't know how much of that money stays within the country but they are apparently the largest company in Finland. Microsoft wouldn't spend this much money to buy out a partner unless they wanted to make a long-term commitment to the smartphone market.

If anything, Finns should be happy that their biggest company has a sugar daddy (although several Nokia employees will probably be laid off due to redundancy).

Indeed. Cutting Symbian production in favor of W8 when Elop took over cost them 1000+ jobs alone.

Finnish government can't do that.

so is the N-Gage finally going to take off now?  With backing like this, Palm OS ought to be sweating.

I don't see Microsoft entering handheld gaming exactly but maybe like a 7 and 10 inch Nokia tablet that runs the Windows8 and integrates with the XboxOne so you can remote-play all the console games using a bluetooth or official XBO controller. The idea of being able to play your xbox from any Windows device that has a decent wifi connection is pretty nifty.
